NCAA threatens to boot the whole state of California if bill becomes law

It may have been said before, but this has nothing about doing what's "right". This is about putting California's flagship universities (Cal, Stanford, USC, UCLA) back where they belong when it comes to football and basketball by giving them an advantage in recruiting with players being able to make money.
It can be both

If I were a shady California businessman (or shoe company) I would offer every freshman $100k for their image rights for 10 years. Most kids would take the money without thinking about what they are actually signing.

Once I own the rights the school has to pay me if they want to use the player in any type of promotion. As will any local business. The kid gets nothing.

Since I own the rights for 10 years, I still make $ if the kid ends up being a pro as well.

I can't decide if you're being cynical or just misguided.

What's misguided about what I said? California's top talent has left the state in both of their major revenue generating sports. This is a way of trying to not only keep top kids from leaving, but maximizing revenues at the schools through playoff appearances and the NCAA Tournament.

This is so unfair. Now some booster will just pay the players and we’ll end up with the SAME TEAMS IN THE PLAYOFF every year.

Oh wait, that already happens. Huh.

It’s almost like we’re just moving the money from “facilities” to the actual players. Can’t have that now.

The players will have agents licensed by the state. They will be well represented.

Ultimately I think this bill passing is a good thing. It is going to force the NCAA and its member institutions to finally reckon with incongruous situation that exists with schools generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue due to "amateur athletics".

Of course, as constructed, this law will yield a ton of consequences, some good, some bad. But disruption seems long overdue.

I love big-time college sports. It also makes zero sense to have academic institutions act as quasi-professional sports franchises. It's largely a freak occurrence of history and legacy that no other country on Earth replicates. Hopefully over the next four years the NCAA, universities, the states poised to enact similar legislation (South Carolina is on the clock), and other parties hammer out a somewhat logical path forward.

*edit* One editorial note... Fear that a new system may be abused is no excuse for not doing anything. ALL systems are abused, like the one that currently exists. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try to isolate those instances and make the overall environment better.

To get around this new law why can’t the California schools have a clause when a kid signs that in return for the scholarship, the kid relinquishes their image rights to the school?

Wouldn't that literally be against the law?!

Would it? Isn’t the law that they can profit from their rights? They would be getting compensated via scholarship. Would a court rule against the schools, oh wait I forgot this is California.

I’m pretty sure a substantial component of the law is predicated on scholarships not being “compensation”, strictly speaking. And I’m not tracking your “this is California” sarcasm. Say what you mean, no need to play coy.

There's no way Paul Allen is going to do that... he passed away last year.

No way, him and Tupac and Biggie are going to bring the Cougs back to greatness.

I hope we have some friends of the program with local businesses because, you’re correct, I know first hand that Clemson and UGA have local business-owners very much ready to throw some sponsorship money around if it comes to that.

People are really following the NCAA’s bullchit about this bill.
All this bill does is allow players to own their likeness and sign endorsements deal while maintaining their eligibility.
The boosters aren’t going to give players a lot of money for worthless likeness or endorsement deals.

This law is protecting the Stars who deserve money. Think Carmelo Anthony or Zion Williamson.
Players role players aren’t going to get insane money.

EA Sports has no reason to not give every kid some bucks and bringing back College Football video game.

Most kids won't get stupid money. But we'll see some small town heroes get paid. Think of Gerry in Scranton. He'd have received as much or more from local Scranton businesses as he would have in CNY.

It'll also protect Olympians that are still in the NCAA. You have some UCLA gymnast who becomes America's sweetheart next year (or 2024) and she'll be able to cash in right away.

I haven't heard one reason that isn't completely idiotic for why this is a bad idea with Doug Gottlieb and Darren Rovell leading the way parroting the NCAA.

NY has a bill that's being considered too.

The bottom line is that as revenue has gone up, the compensation has not. That imbalance is/was always unsustainable. The NCAA is toothless and has become less empowered over time.

The best case scenario will be fair model that allows payers to be paid for their likenesses alongside a robust and empowered governing body with real power to enact good and smart rules while punishing cheaters.

NY's bill is a step in the right direction, but I don't love colleges paying players themselves. Wish we would just copy the California bill.

The NY bill would kill collegiate sports.
If 15% of profits had to been to all athletes.
Then non revenue sports would be cut and only football, and men’s and women’s basketball would survive.

Colleges aren’t going to pay cross country runners, lacrosse players, swimming athletes profits from football and basketball players.

Also unions/CBA won’t be far behind from the NY bill. That 15% would become negotiable in the future.

You can’t pay the athletes profits or the schools cut a lot of sports.

I have said amend the law that all collegiate programs that bring in profits must give some stipend or something. The money comes from football TV and donations, tickets. Basketball as well.
The rest of the sports don’t turn profits.
