ND Postgame Discussion

I thought three plays killed us. There was the opening pick-6, the 4th down attempt, and the short punt.

Not saying we would have won without those plays, but they were all self-inflicted and ND was too good to give points away.

We've got a full plate ahead of us. Let's win 'em all and go bowling.
Without those two mistakes were even tied score...so even thou it looked like they gotvyo do what they wanted...without those two mistakes were even

Couldn't tell ya. Do we want the stands full or not? Seems to be complaints either way.
I think people are asking for people to show up to watch football, like other places get.

Today was a royal kick in the nads for attendance. It plays right into the local and national perception that we will always fail. You just can't underestimate the air out of the balloon effect with this program IMHO. The fans have responded this year but today really really hurts. To the casual fan this is same old Cuse.
Let's not go overboard about perception. Most teams get beat by ND, it's not that newsworthy

With regards to attendance, what was up with the corner in the 300's that was completely empty? I noticed it midway through the 1st quarter and then again toward the end of the half. I'm not sure they showed it on TV again after that.
Student “overflow” section. It’s becoming a running joke.

Tucker getting trolled by ND on Twitter with another #pl34sed tweet

I’ll say this. The very first run by Tucker….where he picked up chunk yardage, he didn’t get the edge.

Last year, he got that edge and got upfield. My first thought was his burst is gone.
I'm glad we gave him a shot at the record on the second half of the Wagner game tho!

It’s not just his burst. It’s his yards-after-contact are also missing. The things that made him special are missing. And they’ve been missing since that first cheap shot by Louisville that wasn’t even called. And half the people here were insisting it was other factors. Hate to say it but he’s just an average running back out there living off last year’s accolades. What sucks is the coaches don’t trust RB2 over a diminished #34 for whatever reason.

So some of you guys are definitely not going to want to hear this right now because of how we’re playing, and I get that. But with Wake losing today, the Orange Bowl is still VERY much in play.

Lots of different plays have been pointed out but the pick 6 and blocked punt were 14 points themselves. Other than that we are right in it despite everything else.

Pick 6 - It seemed to me that Shrader didn't like the criticism that he focused too much on Gadsden and was going to him just to shut everyone up. Oops.

Shrader - He's the same guy we thought he was before he played out of his mind vs poor competition. I found it interesting that it sounds like every play call is a read option and that Shrader is essentially making every call. That's how Sean Tucker gets 5 carries vs Clemson. If Shrader can't use his legs he can't be in there.

CDRW - Let the controversy begin!! Just kidding. If Shrader is healthy and can run he's our guy. If not Del Rio-Wilson has some skills that need to be utilized. The future is bright in the QB room.

Sill looking - for another WR to take pressure (and double teams) off of Gadsden. Nice to see Pena and Adams catch a couple balls and Hatcher had some spectacular non-catches. :( We're not going to beat teams with skill enough to take Gadsden away.

If we had a TE like the ND kid we'd be undefeated and deserving to be in the top 20. Wonder if we could put about 30 lbs on Taylor and sneak him out there?

Overall I'm disappointed. ND is not that good but we couldn't stop them up the middle. They have more talent and depth. I'd say FSU is the only team left with that kind of talent. Not discounting Wake or Pitt. I said we should be happy going 3-3 in last 6. Off to a tough start on that but I still think 3-1 is possible and if we truly are a good team, we will go 3-1. Hope Shrader is back to himself soon.

That's what I mean tho.
Right. I was referring to the deep sideline throws where the WR has a step and the throw hits him in stride, or at least that's where the QB tries to put it, for an over the shoulder catch. CRW threw at least two of those. I'm not sure Shrader has thrown one this year. I don't know if that's because this is the first we've seen Hatcher and maybe he's the only guy we have capable of getting open on those or if Shrader doesn't like those throws.

Drop was bad, but he's also the only guy we've had all season actually get that open on that route, so I'm willing to see more of him.
Oh yeah. I'm not saying I don't want more of him, just that he needs to catch that ball. Maybe now that his feet are wet he will.

What happens if ND wins out? They would finish 9-3 and would probably get the Orange Bowl.

Student section. Happened vs nc state as well. They should open those up to the public if they can’t fill it which they are proving they can’t.
If it's a sellout, aren't those seats sold? Did those students just not show up?

They have Clemson next week and still have to play USC. They’re not winning out, they just looked amazing today because our DL is undersized and they were able to jam them up constantly. UNC is the concern.

Game was lost when we started a QB who was at 50% and the half that was gone was his ability to run which is his calling card.
If Shrader is unwilling/unable to run he is not an effective QB for us. We saw it last year when he got dinged up and we’re seeing it again. Sit him and hope we get him back for the last two or three games. We have no shot winning with him hurt.

Notre Dame can't go to the Orange Bowl as an ACC team. They can be selected to the Orange Bowl as an opponent to the ACC though.

No, the second best team in the ACC goes to the OB and that is UNC. It's between us and Wake for the Cheez-It Bowl.

In our prior games against ND at MetLife and Yankee Stadium, I always felt like we lost primarily because their superior talent just overwhelmed us -- especially their passing game against our weak pass D. But I never felt that way yesterday. The talent disparity seemed marginal at best. I really think they beat us mostly because of scheme and coaching.

Like most fans, I'm not a sophisticated football Xs and Os person, but they ran a formation at least a dozen times where they would line up like they had five receivers and were throwing thus baiting us into going small with lots of DBs, and then shift into a power running formation and would get 5 yards basically effortlessly. That essentially won the game for them. If it was Brian Kelly I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of a compliment, but because Marcus Freeman seems like a good dude I have no problem giving credit for very smart coaching.

No the Orange Bowl is going to North Carolina, unless they implode the last 4 games. They are unbeaten in Conference and will play in the championship game.
