New Assistant: Brenden Straughn [Now confirmed]

You could argue that a Mintz/Starling/Moore starting backcourt with Copeland and Taylor off the bench is in range of what Baylor had in their run just not quite as strong depth wise. Just bring Jesse back and find the right combo of guys to play the 4 and add extra depth.

I'm not saying it immediately makes this team a contender but that backcourt would have us getting pre season attention in the polls.

I think we would have to wait and see on that.
Baylor’s top 4 scorers were all guards. Two NBA draft picks. And all 4 shot .40 from three.
Butler 16ppg
Mitchell 15ppg
Teague 14ppg
Flagler 9ppg

We know we wouldn’t have the shooters Baylor had. Probably not the defenders either.
Definitely Dollar Store Baylor.

Uh yeah, those 3 guards and Jesse back. Then you add in Brown, Benny, Copeland, and Taylor.

That’s a top 10 team and contender for a title lol

Judah
JJ
Moore
End of season Benny
Jesse

On paper that could be the best starting lineup in college hoops. Things need to break the right way but it’s hard not to be excited again.

I think contender is the ceiling... Top 25/Sweet 16 is about what you'd expect.

To be contenders, chemistry would need to click. Plus several big improvements in individual performance and several other incremental improvements would need to occur.

Bringing in two guards from other programs and expecting them to start and be stars right of the bat might be difficult. Moore and Starling would need to play well right away to get some wins in Hawaii.

Big changes would include greater consistency from Williams in defense, scoring and rebounding. We would need better shooting from 3pt range from both Starling and Mintz. The team defense would need to gel in a whole new system, while they're getting used to playing together.

Minor, incremental improvements would be Edwards moving just one notch higher in his game, so even his bad games look good in the end. Improved ball security from Mintz and Starling. Brown, Hima, Taylor, Copeland and Bell would need to play well in their limited minutes.

Another concern is Williams and Brown coming back in the fall muscular enough to allow the three guards lineup to work.

Yeah certainly fun to think about starting lineups and new running styles, let's let some domino's fall in place and see how the chemistry looks with the new guys and those who stay. Lots of things still need to happen here. No need for Reds first year to start immediately with "best lineup in the country " expectations from fans. Sit back and enjoy at this point and let's see how the new look Cuse team evolves.

UCLA starts 4 guards with one big and has gone 31-5 so far this year. If one of those guards did not get injured they would be a much bigger favorite to make the FF.

It helps that Jaquez is built like a tank.

Yeah 4 'guards'

UCLA's starting 5 are:

6'6
6'6
6'6
5'11
6'9

and Miles Johnson is 6'11

Are you looking at last years roster? Jaquez is the only guy 6'6". Johnson is gone.

idk I might've been so my bad if I did. But not all guard lineups are created equal was really the point. We're talking about a 3 guard lineup that goes up to 6'4. Many of these guard heavy lineups are running 'guards' who are 6'6 or even taller. It's just not the same

Of course not, but Moore is as strong enough to play SF if that's what it came down to. He is 6'4" 210. UCLA had a guy playing there this year at 6'5" 195 until he was injured.

Miami is another team that plays 4 guards at 6'0", 6'3", 6'5", 6'6", with a 6'7" big man.

That's the ceiling.

You never know how adding two transfers will impact the team, plus adjustment by all team members to a new style of play and head coach.

While many argue the change in coaches will be a huge positive for recruiting (and I happen to agree), you never know how it's going to impact the in-game strategy, rotation of players, and everything else.

Optimistic for sure, but Top 10/title contender is a huge leap from non-NIT level play this past year.

One key factor is that if you are running 6-10 /6-11 at the 5 with a 6-9 pf then 3 guards at 6-4ish it's quite a bit different.

If Jesse returns think about how this works. He likes to get the ball quickly once he posts to pivot, turn and score. He also runs the floor well in addition to being a good rebounder because he high points most of his boards.

A 3guard lineup with someone like Moore who is strong, gives you pace, the threat to drive or shoot and then quick action into the post. You cover your bases on both ends with that type of lineup. Miami is effective with how Omier plays like a 6-10 big guy more than 6-7 but still is limited. Baylors formula was 3 attacking guards who can hit from the perimeter along with either another shooter at or a physical and then a big body inside.

Hey now..trying to be humble and conservative here.. but yeah.. that's a really good team lol

My personal belief is he still active but keeping a low profile at the request of the university. Either way we will be fine
Also could there be pre existing contracts that were for multiple years that he is still honoring?

This entire premise of what makes a guard a guard and what makes a SF a SF is strange.

What is the difference between a 6’6” guard and a 6’7” SF?

In my opinion size is what defines the position. NBA and College are much different though in the size thresholds.

A 6’6” guard can be either a 2 guard or a SF. But he very well may have the same attributes of a PG or SG. Basketball is more positionless than ever. You no longer need a PF that needs to bang and a center that needs to bang. But you need athletic bigs that can stretch the floor. I just find it funny for people to say it’s a 3 guard lineup when the guy is 6’6”. That can also be classified as a SF (Hughes, fair, etc). That’s a hybrid.

I am totally fine with playing 3 guys under 6’6”. But then you need 2 guys that are at least 6’8” to 6’11” that are athletic and hit the boards. If the guy can shoot (southerland, Nicholas, etc). The old prototypical forward for Syracuse that would work as 1 of the 2 bigger guys.
