New CB Coach: Chip West

This is happening exactly how the board asked.

Very surreal. (Pinches himself). Nope, it appears to be real.
I agree, and it's a little unnerving, IMO. What Dino said about the 3-3-5 and the fans wanting an aggressive defense made me a bit uncomfortable. It came across as if he were delegating the defensive coaching philosophy to the fan base. Make your decision based on strategic football choices the coaches and you make, not what fans want.

And I did not expect recruiting to be a criterion in the choice of new coaches. I'm happy that we have hired guys that have that skill, and if it was a conscious choice to look for it, great. But you don't have to listen to fans to know that it's a skill to pursue.

I am guessing this means that Tony White will be the linebacker coach and be the only one on the staff who really knows the 3-3-5. He is going to be a busy man for the next year or two.

New Cali Award Bonus Category may have to include Swag Daddy, West, White, Gilbert and the rest of our recruiters this season.

who earned their coffee

I agree it was a strange part of the presser and out of character for Dino.
I assume he was trying to get the fans excited about the change but it ended up sounding like a parent who reluctantly lets their kid do something they really shouldn't be doing.

Odd.

Sigh. Dude(tte) - Dino did NOT "listen to the fans" regarding these hires.

Pending DC Tony White said specifically on his podcast interview w/ Bailey that Dino had approached him several years ago, asking all sorts of questions about the 3-3-5.
He's had an interest in that D, and pairing it with his O, for a while now.
This is not a new dalliance on his part.

As for getting more and better recruiters, well - DUH!!
Clearly we've been needing to do that, since we didn't get the expected bump in recruiting rankings after the 10-win season we'd all hoped for.

Odd.
I took it as a way to encourage fan enthusiasm and excitement about the team, not how he's managing the team.

Honestly , I think its just Dino trying to hold true to his promise from that first press conference, Letting the fans and media know he is standing true to those words, thats my interpretation. ( I believe he said a defense that is relentless, we haven't seen to much of that.)

I imagine his primary region is DMV. This gives us another solid recruiter like Reno to cover another area of interest. I would like a strong recruiter in New England area. Connecticut preps schools are starting to load up with prospects.

Is this the guy who won defensive recruiter of the year twice in the ACC? Or someone else

Swag Daddy, White, West, Gilbert are all great-stud recruiters. Reno, Reynolds and Standard are good recruiters but a level below those 4. I think it’s a very realistic expectation that we snag multiple 4 stars this cycle. I would be pretty disappointed if this cycle isn’t the best recruiting class we’ve had in the last 10+ years. Dino did a HELL OF A JOB this offseason.

I think you're selling Reno, Reynolds and Stannard short. Ferri has done a great job in the DMV.

I'd like to see us hit Philly harder. Maybe West or Ferri adds it now.

Believe White played LB in college, so that should help. Interesting West was announced before White.

I think Stanard and Reno have been good. Have been a little disappointed in Reynolds recruiting-Was expecting a little more from him coming from Fleck's staff, but he hasn't brought in much.

Dino is a smart man. I took the presser comments as being made in a political fashion to appease or engage the fan base a little. When you watched it he gives a sort of wink and sly smile. At the same time, you should listen to your base a little bit and it's NO SECRET that aggressive defenses wreak havoc in college ball. Dino is a smart man. His changes have zero to do with the fan base. He's changing it up because what they were doing wasn't working and that's a good thing.

Tomcat responded about as well as I could.

Agreed.

It was a nod to the fans that he heard them (similar to Wildhack and the uni’s) - but he did it because he believes in the d system. He traveled to the west coast to pick their brains in 2016.
