WR Coach Ross Douglas to Oregon

Was there evidence of it though? Maybe there was stuff going on behind the scenes, but all I saw was a guy bringing some celebrities to courtside seats. I didn't see a guy wanting to ensure his school had every chance to succeed.
Guys. He gave over a million dollars towards NIL. Funded multiple sports including Womans bball. Why are you bashing him? Because he pushed his social media PF. Because he brought celebrities to Syracuse. I dont get the hate. The guy loves SU. Is a really good friend of JB that all of you worship and yet you throw this guy under the bus. Only in Central NY. Seriously most of you need to travel

As mentioned by kcsu, he put out about $1m for NIL to retain players. 6-7 men’s bball, 1 women’s bball and 1-2 fball players. Fair had a 2 year deal and he honored the 2nd year even though he was out. She acknowledged it and thanked him on social media. He was gone before he could make deals with any incoming recruits the following recruiting season. He had been talking to a couple and brought Choppa to a game. But to say he did nothing for NIL is incorrect.

Is there a rule that every thread of 4+ pages has a Weistman back-and-forth that I’m unaware of?

Only losing one coach voluntarily at top-25 program (which we were last year) seems above standard if you look around the country. If we continue to be successful, people should get used to losing people. Ohio State won the title and lost both their coordinators, one to a lateral job. It happens everywhere.

And he promised a million a year for a great player. Would likely bid what it would take to get guys here. From a sports perspective, the chancellor did wrong by this.

Can he coach? I'm tired of SU hiring folks who were good players and are family. Personal talent doesn't necessarily translate to coaching ability (I'm talking to you, Red).
So far, we are 50 % successful with this approach in hoops.

Yea, even if the guy gave millions to the programs, brought more attention to our games and at the same time brought more attention to himself...I would consider that pretty damn normal.
The guy is different, pretty damn down to earth and what I consider cool.
Yes, I did spend a fair amount of time with him in the Bahamas. Met him on the beach, had drinks and he invited my family to dinner with him on Thanksgiving. ~they ran out of turkey by 6pm~
Mariano Rivera was sitting next to us and came over and sat down for a bit, english wasnt the greatest.
Anyone hating on him is not in tune with reality.
He is literally being recruited by other top programs! Google it.

SU pushing that dude away is a shame and just ignorant. Whoever made this decision walks around with bungee cords strapped around their butt cheeks so tight im surprised they didnt lose a leg, clearly lost their balls. Get with the program, times are a changin.

Sad when schools like Miami could potentially lure one of our greatest assets away, especially now.

I don’t personally have anything against the man. I just don’t want him as the face of recruiting at my alma mater. I have seen him as “the billionaire client” on two different cheesy luxury real estate shows where he claims to need a $100million luxury home in LA and the Hamptons, and I haven’t seen him buy anything. It may not be an accurate representation of who he is, but it’s what he puts out there and what I have to base an opinion on (and why I am OK with the distancing). I genuinely appreciate what he seems to do for the betterment of CNY, but I don’t see SU as a charity case no matter how much money they may need to be competitive in high stakes revenue sports. Don’t they have a $2billion endowment?

Sweet. It’s a Ross Douglas thread.

I stand corrected. I didn't realize he had contributed over a million toward NIL. However, with regards to the post I responded to, that's not close to being Phil Knight, which was the statement. In fact, haven't numerous other donors donated more? And if he still loves SU so much, could he not continue to donate in a less visible way? Or is he and I'm wrong about that too?

In part because it isn’t his school. He went to LIU and then the NY State penal school for an 8 month graduate degree in check fraud. I have read a lot about deals being offered, but very few made. Good for him for putting a portion of his wealth to preserving, celebrating, and building bits of CNY but as far as Syracuse is concerned, his only affiliation is a relationship with JAB. I am not sure why people don’t want to understand that in this relationship, he seems to take more than give, and leadership at SU felt their own integrity and NIL was worth more than the $1million he was offering.
Just to clarify, when I say his school, I don't mean alumnus. I never went to SU but it's my school because I'm a CNYer.

All good. Also for clarity, I wasn’t calling you out or questioning your position, just tacking on to it. When I hear others say what a huge fan he is, but then worry openly that other schools like Miami may poach him, then even they are saying he’s a free agent who doesn’t have a “his school”. He will go to whoever makes it easiest for him to promote himself, and grow his social media base. It’s not about the kids, or the school. This is just my opinion, but how I see it based on these poaching statements, and his public actions.

Oregon is currently one of the top programs and now have a blank check from Phil Knight. They will not be coming to take any of our WRs.
So you don't believe that any SU WR recruit is good enough to play for Oregon? Or that Ross doesn't have a relationship with any of those recruits?

Again, I'm not dealing in absolutes here but if a HS player has a good relationship with him and that is where the bond is, is it possible Oregon would be interested in a 4 star WR?

I don't think he burns a bridge with Fran over a couple of recruits

If he has a relationship with them plus Fran knows the recruiting game better than we do, did Fran go after any Georgia player or player he was recruiting when he left Kirby? I'm not being an alarmist here KC, just saying that it's a big money game I'm sure Fran understands if Ross did recruit some of the same players.

That said, I still have my money on Fran.

I don’t think the endowment is for, nor can it be used for, NIL or athletics in general. There are often very limiting restrictions on donations to endowments.

None of the above
Oregon gets BETTER recruits and can basically hand pick the kids they want to have on the team. No need for them to come after our kids at this point.

I know and agree. I only brought it up to show that Syracuse University is not a destitute charity case.

I want donors for the AD as much as the next, but not if it puts us at risk as I understood the private jets with rappers might, and not if it reflects poorly on the academic institution and its mission.

Donors who are interested in making a spectacle of their donation for their own benefit no matter how it reflects on others, including those they’re trying to help just don’t make sense to me. How do we get so angry about “me first” athletes, but not donors who embody the same attitude?

Agree. Losing an assistant to a program the caliber of Oregon is a good thing. And don't anyone even try to talk about SU's commitment on this one. Not many schools could compete with Phil Knight and Big 10 money.
I apologize as it looks like my post above, which I thought was an innocent comment, turned into another thread about Adam. My only point is If you look at what Phil has done for Oregon - financed a $68 million football facility, has the basketball arena named after his son due to his support on that, has donated almost $1 billion to the university in general, a huge NIL supporter with their Division Street collective - when you have that kind of supporter for anything you need, it makes it very easy to outbid SU for a WR coach. I'm very grateful for what Adam has done for NIL in the past and it would be nice to have him back in the fold. But to put him in the same sentence as Phil Knight as a supporter is laughable. I'm sorry if that offends Adam's groupies on here.

Very well said. Totally agree.

AW was doing a better job marketing the BB team than the school. He drew attention to the team, brought big names to the Dome, responsible for some butts in seats. Did he over reach? Maybe? I don't know the specifics but the celebrity sightings brought excitement when the team on the court wasn't.
