New DC ideas

We just got a $25 Million donation. Let's aim high.
Fran Brown is a decent choice. The others are, to me, bad fits.

Ash has shown he can produce a decent defense when given a roster of HS AAs. We don't need a coach like that, who, when provided with decent talent, was a collosal failure. He was an awful hire for Rutgers and would be a awful fit here as well.

We need someone who can do more with less, who has shown he can develop players and out scheme good coaches.

Jim Leavitt is 62 and could not get a job as a paid assistant this season. He would require a huge salary and I don't see him busting his butt to turn around Syracuse. Even if he came, he would leave at the first chance he got to coach at a school that is a better fit for him.

Charlie Strong, if he doesn't get another HC job, is going to be among the highest paid assistant coaches in the country. We aren't going to compete with Alabama, Georgia and Oklahoma for coaches. It just isn't going to happen.

Plus none of these guys has strong connections to the Northeast, where I think are having major problems recruiting.

Fran Brown is the only guy on your list that kind of makes sense. He comes from NJ, an area we need to have coaches with connections. He has had to identify raw talent and develop it coaching at Temple. He has never been a defensive coordinator though (he is listed as a co-defensive coordinator but Jeff Knowles is the DC at Temple).

I think we need a youngish, hungry , personable guy with ties to our traditional recruiting areas, experience coaching up talent and experience as a DC. This is not the time to go cheap and hire someone who has never coordinated a defense before (or spend a ton on someone with bad qualifications who is poorly suited to the task at hand).

I think there is a lot to like about the Memphis DC. If we offer before Norvell takes a better job, we could get him.

Isn’t Knowles calling the shots at Temple? He seems better.

What about Tressel if Dantonio is fired? Barnett at FSU? DeWayne Walker? Brown if Harbaugh goes NFL?

We need someone who can RECRUIT and not give up 1000 yards to mediocre teams. Being just average on defense is fine if we can find another Monroe. Won't matter what Dino tries if we keep bringing up the basement in the conference recruiting rankings.

He was a good DC at Wisconsin and Arkansas before Ohio State or Urban doesn't bring him in, so he did it w/o HS AA's. He was also a recruiting coordinator at a couple of spots, so he should be a decent recruiter.

So who do you like?

Good question. I haven't had time to do research. Maybe I can do some tonight or tomorrow night. If I do, I will post what I think. But to me, the keys are

1) success as a DC
2) ability to identify and develop raw talent
3) ability to recruit
4) ties to traditional recruiting areas for Syracuse

It will probably be someone from a G5 school. Could even be a HC of a BCS level school with DC experience.

Will need to pay the DC anywhere from $750K to $1.2MM to start and hoping CUSE can find that money for someone good.

I think Stanard keeps the job and we hire a position coach.

Side note, I don’t see too many DCs who are ace recruiters. I find it’s usually the position coaches who are.
Schiano but he's out of our price range. And DB was also unhappy with Ward's scheme. So unless Stanard's installing something new, seems like a new DC hire is likely.

He was a co DC in Wisconsin under a HC who was a D guy.

He was DC in Arkansas under a HC that was a D guy. That team went 3-9 and 0-8 in the SEC and had a really bad D in conference.

He was a co DC at Ohio State.

So how much success has he really had? The above is a big reason many here didn’t want him hired as HC.
