New DC ideas

Young and hungry = cheap. Syracuse cannot miss with this hire or penny pinch. They need to spend money on someone proven. Football is a straw that stirs the drink for the athletic department. Time for SU to act like it.

I think Stanard keeps the job and we hire a position coach.

Side note, I don’t see too many DCs who are ace recruiters. I find it’s usually the position coaches who are.

I hope he does a good job. He is a really good end coach. Let’s hope it translates.

Saw this in the other thread:

Last 3 seasons as a DC, his defense at Wyoming ranked 103, 102, 101 in the country. Granted, that's improvement, but we need better. Their Defense became much better after he was gone-9,29,15 the following 3 seasons, including this year, under the same HC, Craig Bohl. Again, love him as a DL coach, not as a DC.

Borland checks some boxes. Good candidate. UB's defense has been good since he got there.

Brian Newberry, mentioned just above, also looks like a fine defensive mind. He would be worth interviewing. Doubt we would take him given he works for a good friend of Dino’s.

I like Clayton White at Western Kentucky. Went to NC State, has coached there, at UConn, at Stanford and Western Michigan.

I like what Chad Staggs has done as the DC at Coastal Carolina. Great defensive mind. Coastal made a huge jump up in defense in his first year as their DC.

Scottie Hazelton is the DC at Kansas State. Turned around the defense at Wyoming. Great defensive mind.

I also like John Loose, the DC at Army. Grew up in Watkins Glen, went to school at Ithaca College and SUNY Albany. Has coached his whole career in the Northeast.

I wonder if Dino would consider bringing Scott Shafer back? He hired Brian Ward in large part because of the problems his defense presented for Dino. Middle Tennessee State isn’t doing great overall or on defense. I bet he would come in the drop of a hat if he could.

Think David Reeves, 3rd year DC from UAB, would be a great get. They've been excellent on Defense. 55 in the nation 1st year after not having a team the year before. Then the #7 and #14 Defense in the country the last 2 seasons (including this one). Resume says it all. He sets records for his Defense, not other team's offenses.

Schiano but he's out of our price range. And DB was also unhappy with Ward's scheme. So unless Stanard's installing something new, seems like a new DC hire is likely.

There is talk that Schiano will meet with Rutgers this week.

I never disliked him tbh. I was joking above but I never got the hatred of him like others here
