New Helmets Saturday

Changes like the helmets, uniforms, IPF, etc. all help us attract recruits since

Actually donors like myself helped build the IPF because I believe change is good.
The IPF, new uniforms, new helmets, etc. actually help recruiting a hell of a lot more than showing these kids blacks and white highlight videos of Jim Brown and Ernie Davis from the 1950's.
No one here suggested change wasn't good...but change for the sake of change is worthless. If these are the helmets debuted tomorrow than we're wasting time and money. By any measure they're awful. We can do better.

Btw, many here have contributed to the IPF fund...not for change but because we believe it is a competitive necessity. Your comments about Jim Brown and Ernie Davis are ridiculous on their face.

I guess I'm part of the " old fashioned" minority who loves tradition. If they do experiment I hope they have a touch of class and pay some respect to our history.

  • With my luck they'll go with a silver helmet with a metallic blue "S", blue jersey and white pants. And the younger ones will say its awesome.

Yep. I'd put money on every kid from south beach or NYC totally agreeing with some old guy on what's cool.

---

Not only that we have actual quotes from actual players who are actually excited to put on the helmets they were consulted with about. So - yeah, they may not be what we like, but "we" ain't them.
South Beach? Let's work on getting a few recruits from NJ first. And if McDonald hopes to open a pipeline from there, he better hope Hunt pulls his butt out of the fire.

As for being old, I'm not very many years removed from SU. And like I said in another post, I think what Oregon does is awesome and looks great almost every week. The majority of the Nike pro-combats have looked cool as well. But then, these schools seem to get Nike's full attention. We don't for football, and this looks like it was shoddily done.

An astute observer at another site noted that these helmets look like our softball helmets. I agree.

Sorry ladies, but they look bad there too.

so you seem to know everything please bless us little people with some of your wisdom. what would you do

I remember when fans just cared about x's and o's. I think the game has passed me by.

I would go back to the drawing board. Like I've said, there is a lot of cool new gear out there that is not traditional but looks good. My main problem is that this looks of poor quality and like it was done on the cheap. Maryland's unis are pretty bizarre, but they at least look professionally manufactured.

Many are arguing that these new unis will help attract recruits. I agree that sharp and modern new uniforms might help with recruiting. But something that is new and bizarre for its own sake, without any aesthetic merit, won't accomplish this goal. Anyone who thinks we can just roll out anything that is new and strange no matter how cheap and awful it looks and attract recruits because of it isn't giving these young men enough credit. Does anyone think that recruits won't hear the nationwide panning these will receive tomorrow?

Additionally, debuting new incredibly obnoxious helmets is desperate by itself, but against Tulane it's pathetic.

I hope the almost entirely negative response from fans, besides the handful eternal optimists on these boards, convinces the athletic department to hold these back. To paraphrase another fan, I don't think it will be long, or any time at all, before we look back and cringe at these helmets. These might be SU's version of the MLB's 2021 jerseys,

Oregon changes their uniform every week, and they attract recruits.
Alabama never changes their uniform, and they attract recruits.

I'll going to postulate that people that think fad uniforms attract recruits in droves are completely full of crap.
That said, the fade helmet with logo, blue pants, orange jersey would look awesome whether it attracts a single recruit or not (and for those in question, the answer is not...)

No, they still look terrible on TV. Plus they don't stop moving so I can't find the picture in the stereogram

I see youve found our alternate (reality) kits.

Do you think we should at least wait to see the finished product? Personally I like them. Also like many other have mentioned San Diego St used the same design and those turned out good. They aren't nearly as bad as some people are making them out to be, and some people think they will look good, so they aren't universally hated at all

I don't get this thread... Who ing cares what we wear as long as we win. If the players like the helmets and uniforms then I'm fine with them. Because honestly our opinions don't matter. What are you going to do? Boycott the game and not go? This thread is ridiculous

I did not mean to piss anyone off. My post may have been poorly worded but after living in this area for 50+ years its frustrating to see how many people in this community live in the past and constantly complain when someone does something different. People went nuts when Mayor Driscoll decided to close down Erie Boulevard to build the Clinton Square area because traffic would come to a stand still and no one would be able to get to work. Now we have some great events downtown along with ice skating in the winter because someone had the courage to do something different.

I love the fact that Coach Shafer has allowed these kids to work with Nike to design new helmets and uniforms. These kids work their a$$'s off 365 days a year so we can be entertained on a Saturday afternoon. I could care less what the helmets or uniforms look like as long as the players are happy and we put a competitive team on the field. We are not Penn State, Notre Dame , or Alabama so I'm thrilled that Coach Shafer is trying to do different things to attract kids to Syracuse University. I realize the IPF will help us greatly in recruiting but I also think new helmets and uniforms will also help Coach Shafer in his efforts to put this program back in the map.

A prime time win in two weeks against Clemson would not hurt either!!! :)

Winning is probably the greatest recruiting tool available. Unless, of course, you're in the SEC where they buy their players ;-)

I like the fact we are doing something different! I'm not sure if I will like it but will wait to see it on tv ( would rather see it in person). I also like that it sets us up to do throwback stuff witch would be cool. I actually like the idea of the vt helmets. Maryland stuff always looks terrible.

You can't always hit a home run but I like the fact we are being current. HCSS is doing things besides x and o that we need to do to create a buzz which we desperately need. I hope he gets recruits he wants and starts winning because that is what pays off the most.

God forbid you try something outside the box once or twice a season. some of you people are absolutely ridiculous. who knew there were so many fashion critics. if i ever met some of you in person id' fully expect to see you in bell bottoms and cardigans
You may have already met some of us. You know...we're the ones interviewing you. :)

I highly doubt that since I got to where I am by being able to adapt to change. I may have passed you on the way up though :)

If players went to schools because of how progressive and artsy-fartsy the unis were, Penn State would be in a world of hurt. And Alabama. And lots of others. Players go to schools for all different reasons, but until I start seeing the reason they choose is the uniforms, I'm going to assume it is for other things. You know, like tradition, going to a bowl, playing time, education, climate, proximity to family, path to the NFL, coaching, and my personal favorite...CASH.

I don't get passed. I have those people killed. ;)

Fans opinions don't matter? How little you know. . We're the ones that buy the merchandise, buy the tickets, support the team. If we don't like it we don't buy it or go. Our opinions are paramount to the program. Fans run a top program, we are not a top program

So Walter White's blue is going to be the design of our uniforms?

@CuseNationFOX: Specials teams guys are on the field. Helmets are normal orange with blue block S

The Blue on the helmet isn't even the same blue as the face mask or jersey. Hopefully it's just the lighting

No offense - but if you think back on every Oregon uni over the past 5 years - there are plenty that are way worse than this helmet.

Also, we have players from FL right now that are McDonald kids. His play calling was marred by shaky QB play.

In both cases (play calling and uni's) I'd give it some time before you crap on them.

My initial point stands - high school kids vs out if school. For every year you're out, you lose a sense of what the kids think looks good.
