NIL Discussion

What's kind of interesting with NIL is that the inability of certain schools to give scholarships, such as in the Ivy League, becomes less of a disqualifier for top student-athletes. If a school like Penn have boosters that can give good money to the players, they can pay their own tuition and get an Ivy education, along with the money they make. Don't see it happening, but could.
Another thing that can happen is schools can hoard more players than scholarships would allow. A guy like Saban or calipari can tell recruits "we're out of scholarships, but all our players get good money from other opportunities that can greatly outweigh the cost of tuition".

A very good point. The Ivy League schools are among the most wealthy "charity" institutions in the world, with endowments bigger than many a banana republics GDP. They could definitely point up big money if they decided to.

Academic requirements would still be a big problem.

Agreed. But a college players union would be a good thing because it would allow for a collective bargaining agreement with the schools/NCAA and guardrails and restrictions to maintain fairness and competitive balance. That’s how it works in the pros. The NCAA could act on its own, but it will then likely have to defend those actions in court, and they may or may not hold up.
I doubt a players union doing a CBA would work in college because it would have to represent all sports, revenue and non revenue. So they will have to give equal weight to a curling athlete as much as a football athlete. I think the concerns of different sports, men and women are very different. This is not the same as the NBA players association, which doesn't even include the women, who has a WNBA players association. Not to mention how a college athlete players association will be funded with what money? They need staff, general counsel, office, expenses...who pays? The athletes?

Bill Self's interview on NILs is a joke. Basically he is saying he doesn't like the fact that his players now are coming to him saying they want more money than they were being paid (illegally) before and he is worried that Kansas may not have to same amount of booster money other schools will have.

So have the players figured out yet that NIL does nothing for 90% of them with all the money going to a handful of big star players and elite recruits?

When I read these types of things, it always reminds me that as sleazy as Coach Cal and Pitino are, they didn't advocate against players' interests. Their philosophy was "this is what we can do for you, if you can do better elsewhere, go for it."

knowing the NCAA they will probably come up with the absolute most inept "NIL guidelines" like a CAP, with the theory of keeping this from getting out of control and letting the smaller schools remain competitive, but effectively cause the payment to be split into a LEGAL portion (under the cap) and an ILLEGAL portion (back to delivering a bag) then we are back to the same problem LOL!!!

HS students hiring agents and getting paid-
OK.
The NBA would not survive as a league if every year was a Wild West Bidding War for top NCAA players.
That's why they have a draft.
If most top HS players are mainly about the $ and will sign with top bidder regardless of what school that is, then maybe the NCAA should complete the "pro model" and figure out a way to set up a draft for the top (say) 100 HS players. The qualifying HS players would make an irreversible decision whether to throw their hat in for draft $. By opting out of the draft they can select the school of their choice -but with payment limited to a reasonable set annual NIL amount. Definition of reasonable would have to be determined, maybe a limit of $50K or (?). Of course bags could get around this -nothing is perfect.

To participate in the draft, schools would be required to pay a substantial entry fee for the opportunity to draft a top 100 player. It could be a set fee with no limit on participating schools, or may be better to have an auction where only the top (say) 50 bidding schools participate. The draft order for the 50 schools could be based on bid amount: let the schools that want that first pick buck up for it, then pay that player the fat #1 pick "contract". Or draft order could be based on reverse final ranking of the schools that paid to participate in the draft. Lots of options -maybe spin a wheel so no school can know which option will be used and bid accordingly. Wouldn't that be fun!

So in the 50 schools/100 players scenario, the best possible draft would be picks #1 and #51. Wouldn't that be interesting to see the talent spread out instead of a few teams stacked with MCD AA's?

The salaries can be set, similar to the NBA rookie scale. Wouldn't that be fair to all, the goal of NIL? Drafted players would be paid relative to their draft status -top guys get the big $ just like the pros.

What about the portal? Apply the same draft concept. Players would have to announce by a set date, and make the irreversible decision whether regarding do they want to chase "draft $" or select their next school under same terms as above.

Sure this is nuts -but maybe not as nuts as what is going on now!
It blows up this "NIL" madness for a different brand of madness -a different spectacle.
Just some hot take rambling from a disgusted and maybe soon-to-be former college sports fan.

I think it’s too hard to create parity through regulation. I’d rather see the elite conferences (Power 5 for football and Power Five and other highly rated basketball conferences) create their own division. They can compete for players, and the rest of the schools don’t have to try to keep up with the Joneses.

Of course you have to create some parity and a level playing field through guardrails and regulation. Even the pro leagues do it with salary caps, free agency, etc. The Power 5 conference programs are bigger than each of the pro leagues. You still have to try and create a level playing field within the Power 5.

They just fired the Wichita State athletic director because he’s not facilitating pay for play NIL deals with donors. For real. This is truly madness.

That president sounds like an idiot.

Meanwhile Emmy is tucked under the sheets sucking his thumb.

Imagine what the Pearl, Ewing, DC, Shaq, the Fab Five, Grant Hill, etc. could’ve gotten from NIL?

I don’t even know who most of these kids on the good teams are.

He’s not a one man show. These very ADs and their own administrators are as much of the problem.
