NIL Discussion

Like Auerabach said, this is not NIL and should not be called NIL. It is now pay for play and pay for performance like Wong just admitted. He wants more because he was the leader of the team.
Plus McGusty,a 6th year senior, was actually the star on the team. Wong should be the leader this upcoming year. McGusty should sue for back pay.

Rep for Miami star Wong: Better NIL deal or exit
The NIL agent for Hurricanes star Isaiah Wong says the guard will enter the transfer portal if his NIL compensation isn't increased.

Sorry this is long. There are a number of troubling aspects to this Isaiah Wong story. The NCAA a few years ago allowed players testing the NBA draft waters to keep their eligibility if they used an NCAA certified agent, which Wong did using Pappas. If a player uses an agent not certified by the NCAA, they lose their college eligibility.

“The rules changes were spurred in 2018 when the Commission on College Basketball reported that NCAA student-athletes needed earlier professional advice to determine whether it is in their best interests to declare for the NBA draft. As a result, the NCAA agent certification program was created. A student-athlete whose team's basketball season has concluded can start the process by requesting an evaluation from the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee via email at UAC@nba.com.”

So an NCAA certified agent is now negotiating on Wong’s behalf with Miami and their college NIL agreements. So he’s not just providing professional advice regarding whether it’s Wong’s best interest to declare for the NBA or not. He’s now negotiating the deal between Miami’s NIL deal and Wong to decide whether he stays at Miami or goes into the transfer portal. This all with a NCAA certified agent and their approval! Wow.

The can of worms has been opened and the worms have started to crawl around. The concept of college athletes getting compensated more than a college education and extras is a good one. The problem is rules need to be established and enforced so the change is a positive one with some equity ,not a negative wormy mess.

How Wong is this?

I'll see myself out.

The Wong case to me anyway proves that the players are not babes in the woods on this whole NIL and play for pay thing. They have grown up with it and most likely benefitted from it well before stepping on campus. The elite athlete knows how the game is played, probably better than some school officials.
Players are going to push the envelope as far as they can, the schools need to decide how far is too far.

I would have thought the NIL deals would have some structure in them.. you get X for what you do at some school and maybe if you transfer you pay it all back, with penalty or something. you drop out you have some other penalty.

you are getting paid for something so you want more.. maybe these things all need some non performance clause.. im sure people would like the pros to pay something back when they tank on a contract and hurt the teams too..

Why do you think we are so far behind? Not every school is doing what this Ruiz is doing by paying for play. SU athletes have many many NIL deals. What they don’t have is the billionaires handing out millions. JW can’t just snap his fingers and make people hand over their money to players.
Because we have the resources to do something like this (maybe not to the same $$$ extent) yet we don’t. Billionare superfan, strong alumni base, strong brand recognition, super star in the sport (at least last year), etc.

At the beginning of last year, Cuse saying they were at the forefront of NIL (with the Accelerate program and their NIL seminars) but public perception is the opposite.

Make the transfer rule like it used to be, If you transfer, you sit out a year. Is there a legal reason for not doing this? If they can't transfer and immediately play, they lose the leverage to renegotiate. The NIL and the transfer portal go hand in hand.

Maybe you could convince people to spend their money. And they were at the forefront of NIL. This isn’t NIL. And if people in the public have a different perception then they don’t get it. Go look at our peers and tell me how many have someone tossing around millions like Ruiz.

I'd rather let the players go somewhere and play immediately. If it's best for them, let em do it. Of course, companies are free to work into an agreement with the player that they lose money if they leave. No other big time sports league has a red shirt rule and it works fine.

You can only do it if you have willing donors of big money.
Are you saying we have an impoverishment of willing big money donors?

Exactly what I was thinking - unions will be next. The upset within teams bringing in what we used to call ‘ringers’ , renting players for a year or so, will only continue increasing since big $ are involved. Pandora’s box is just starting to open. All these actions and the resulting reactions are only beginning.
Agreed. But a college players union would be a good thing because it would allow for a collective bargaining agreement with the schools/NCAA and guardrails and restrictions to maintain fairness and competitive balance. That’s how it works in the pros. The NCAA could act on its own, but it will then likely have to defend those actions in court, and they may or may not hold up.

Not to be a Debby Downer but maybe Ruiz loves publicity and adoration of Miami fans to go so public and blab about the level and details of his involvement. Others are maybe much more secretive and protective of their extreme ‘generosity’ for their ‘favored’ program.

It’s a ONE TIME no-sit-out transfer rule. So you can only transfer once and not sit out a year. If you want to transfer again, you need to sit out. I’d be fine with them going back to the old rule where they have to sit out a year.

If Wong comes back, he’s going to hear about it from opposing fans (and there’d be nothing Wong with it).

The entire thing reflects badly on everyone - who wants to grab him in the transport portal where it would look like his new destination was upping the ante? Would cause problems within his new team, his new school. If he returns then it would appear that Miami’s NIL caved or he’d have to try to backtrack his entire story, which people probably wouldn’t believe.

Ruiz replied back saying he was refusing to renegotiate so Wong’s current (I knew nothing, it was the agent’s fault) backtracking sure seems pretty weak. Not good for any of them.
