Nixon first play of ot

You know it’s wild…. I left the Pitt game and I said man I’m not sure Nixon knows What he is doing.

I left the Dome on Saturday and said wow Nixon impressed me with the change of game plan.

I still don’t know what we have with Nixon which is wild to me

I was actually cursing Nixon when we lined up this way. We had been running the ball well, so I was worried about getting too cute. I was wrong and Nixon was right.

Also 10 on the field for VT if I’m counting correctly. Good call but also VT defensive alignment was crap
Good call. There were only 10 for VT

I count 11 for them. But they didn't know what to do. We didn't even really block anyone. OG sorta blocked his guy. The rest was just a built in 16 yard gain.

Try again. There’s 11. Give Nixon his shine.
You're right. The white shirts blended together when I counted. I give Nixon all the credit in the world.

What a great call. Set the tone for the whole overtime. Way to think outside the box. Pun intended
Brilliant call. I hope to see more of this set. I also want to see more of the Dan V wildcat sets. I believe we are going to see Dan take a downfield shot out of that set given the right circumstances.

Yeah, I think the brilliance of it is forcing defensive lineman to react in a way they're not trained for. That is, adjusting when it's clear that their assignment isn't to keep a screen to a limited gain. That said, they don't have the speed to keep up with a RB anyway, so they're effectively neutralized as soon as the motion starts.

You have a solid competent OC who will have more good games than bad. He isn't the 2nd coming of Andy Reid but he isn't a bum either. he's a good coach

When the D didnt follow the man in motion they were in big trouble.

If we had a running QB it would have been even worse

If anyone actually makes a block he scores.

One thing that I have come to realize, and many will dispute (which is fine), is that play calling, while important, is actually overrated.

Here’s my hierarchy:
  1. Talent (how good are we, and are we facing Bama, Wake or Wagner?)
  2. Execution
  3. Play Calling
(Similar/identical on the defensive side of the ball)

There are terrific play calls that get blown up by one missed assignment (happpens way, way, way more than anyone thinks, especially at the college level).

And, conversely, there are ‘meh’ play calls that hit big. Most often due to lack of execution on the defensive front.

And really, only the coaches themselves know, because they know the call and the assignments. This is the fatal flaw of PFF.

My takeaway, execution > play calls.

Football is a fascinating sport.

Similar on defense.

Agree 100% with your rankings there. Execution could be a product of good or bad coaching or just a guy not doing his job as well, but that comes back to coaching.

Half time adjustments is another one as well!

The play call we are talking about though was not overrated. It had VaTech completely confused.

Agreed. Nixon confused the defense. They were hesitant due to unfamiliarity. And who can blame them? Definition of an exotic look.

The big play pass VT had. even FB mentioned how it was a blown assignment

Now one could argue the function of many play calls is to confuse the D with the eye candy.

33/33/33

Sometimes you call the right play the D has no chance.

Sometimes the call is wrong but the D messes up

Sometimes you call the right play and the O screws it up.

and yeah PFF has no idea if some guys are actually making the right play

you could make a great block when in reality you did the complete wrong thing

and on D you could look lost when you are actually trying to fix a bigger mistake by someone else who looks to be covering the wrong player perfect

that play really would take some practice for the D to play it well.

if you over play it the WR gets a free release

if the trailing DB doesnt follow the RB he is toast

if the DB does follow the RB then the shortside WR has 1x1 with no safety

the DB with Meeks is also trying to watch the RB. Meeks would have free outside release over the top

if the oline guys stay in to block the D has all sorts of windows that might be throwable.

I wonder how many plays we run off it other than straight runs

but imagine you do this play on 3rd and short.

the D would have to play it tight and the Screen to Allen is there, but that also allows the OG/Valari free release throws.
