Nobody wants to play Syracuse

Six to midnight every time you hear the word zone. So weird.

It's hard work trying to educate those who are stuck in the 1950's idea that Zones are ineffective against outside shooting.

Of all the solutions that are offered up here, IMO a part-time M2M defense is by far the dumbest.

We lost two years ago because we went 0 for 10 from three point range. 1 for 10 and we advance. I think our team will be on a high having been given new life in the tournament and won't want to lose to Dayton a second time and they will get the job done there.

Rebounding hasn't been as constant a problem as we might have expected but when it has been a problem. we've lost. We've kept it amazing close sometimes, (-25 vs. Wisconsin but only lost in OT), but we've lost. I think the Spartans will hammer us on the boards and win. But it will be better than being in the NIT.

Gold.

that pitt -wisconsin game is going to set the basketball world on fire

I think it will be a good game actually. Both teams, especially Wisconsin, are much better now than in the non-conference.

Good defense is about moving your feet and moving your hands. If you aren't doing it well enough to play good zone defense, you aren't going to do it well enough to play good man for man defense.

The Dayton broadcaster was on Bud and the Manchild today and said that Alan Griffin, our former point guard who is an assistant on their staff now, told the Dayton players not to attempt three pointers from the line but to do it from father out because our zone does a good job of covering the line.

The real key to beating the zone isn't to bomb it from outside. It's to get the ball into the high post. The top of the key is the key.

You are absolutely right, especially in the Zone as SU plays it (with M2m principles, as they say)

But logic says, the further out you are, the lower the percentage of made 3's is.

There is no defense against accurate shooting from way out. If you go that far out in M2M, they'll just go around you. You know that I am sure.

As you say, the weak spot in our extended Zone is the high post. And we do poorly against teams that have big men that can handles the ball and shoot accurately. Fortunately, there aren't very many college big men that can do that. And that of course requires the opponent to pull one of their big guys out from underneath, so if they miss ...

At the same time you have to look at the number of times we trap opponents in the corner and force turnovers.

And one of them plays for us...

Who was the slow footed "sharpshooter" on St Johns going around?

There aren't any slow-footed sharpshooters on St Johns and there haven't been since Chris Mullin.

Basketball 101.

On defense, 22 feet from the basket against St John's is a very dangerous place to be. These guys are going forward and the SU defenders are trying to move backwards. Forwards is generally quicker than backwards.

Ron Rowan says hello.

You do realize that statistically that SU is one of the top teams in the NCAA against 3 pt. shooting.

You must also know that the NBA outlawed zone defenses for decades because they were so effective at holding down scoring.

You are operating under the incorrect assumption that zone defenses are less effective against 3 pt shooting than is M2M.
This is the trap that opposing teams, who are unfamiliar with our zone, fall into. Their eyes light up and they become infatuated with chucking up 3 pointers. If someone gets hot and we don't adjust, we get in trouble. But more often than not, the zone causes TOs and the opposition ends up shooting <30% from the 3.

I'd trust G or Cooney going backwards faster than Federico Mussini going forward. Would rather have a guy shooting from 16 feet on the run than 22 feet wide open burying shot after shot.

False premise.

When a guard blows past a defender, they aren't going to pull up and shoot a 16 footer. They are going to continue into the paint and either dish to a Big or go to the hoop. And in their case, as opposed to our TC, they will usually make the lay up and get fouled in the process.

And these guards don't have to dribble around our defender. They just run by them and get a pass as they are heading to the basket.

The higher you extend any defense, the poorer the spacing.

The closer you play someone up top, the more you leave yourself open to a drive. Even Cooney gets to drive to the basket. And it's not because he is super quick. It's because they play him so tightly, so far from the hoop.

This is fundamental, basic, rudimentary basketball.

All week I have been hearing that the Spartans have won this thing already. We can play with state. I do know this we won a tournament t earlier this year, why can’t we win this one.
