Northeastern Postgame

Rarely do I agree with almost every comment here especially complaints after a win, but it's pretty close tonight...

-Stop the substitutions please for the love of god. Someone needs to plead with Autry to tell him he can't just throw 3 random guys into the game, not even 2.
-The Nates, and Kyle need to play 35+ mins a game. We are at our best when they are on the court for the most mins and anything less they are getting out of rhythm. JJ/Kiyan/Sadiq/Betsey it's just the hot hand.
-Suare is a momentum killer. I don't know what it is but he just is. Tennessee he played 4 mins. That's the standard, every game he's came in so far he has just derailed us. I don't blame him it's just that Kyle does too much for us right now.
-Freeman needs to make a statement when he gets back. We're getting crushed at the 3-4 against inferior competition. If he comes in and just wants to stand in the corner and take jumpers then he might as well just go back to his street clothes. This team needs get back to being physical in the paint.

Sometimes we're here overcomplicating. The best and most important players need to play the most minutes.

I'm not seeing that they're not playing hard. I see a lot of effort. Maybe not 100% consistently, but that's human nature, and true of any team. What i do see is that the effort is too often technically unsound.

I see our athletes flying past slow, plodding opponents. I see slow opponents easily driving around us, without feints or trickery—just simple, single moves directly around us. On the other side, i see a slow opponent moving his feet to easily stay in front of our quickest guard.

This is all coaching.

On offense... Uggh. I wish i could understand how every game thread has us screaming about how there is no offensive scheme, no plays, no motion... and the staff hasn't noticed? We have a guy on the outside, dribbling, trying to beat his man. That's 'Play A.' 'Play B' is a clumsy pick and 'roll' where the roller can't do anything with the ball, and the pick doesn't create enough space for scoring and doesn't initiate peripheral motion, so the ballhandler has no pass options off the dribble. I see 'Play C' is to pass the ball three times around the outside of the 3pt line, and then someone jacks a contested three. 'Play D' is a 'weave' with a center and two guards/wings, where... again, there is no peripheral movement, and it results in a chucked 3. I think that's it.

If we see ourselves as 'successful' against a zone, it's not really a matter of actually creating efficient shots. It's just a matter of whether we make the chucks. I guess we did a better job today, but as a matter of scheme and technique, it's not sustainable.

This was Level 5 execution. In deference to Spinal Tap, the range is 1 to 11.

I think i was fooled by some of our Vegas performance, and then Tenn. But, looking at our roster, i have no idea what we have. I don't see any NBA-level talent. This, after Alex Kline did his 3D-level chess stuff. I can only surmise that players we acquired have taken a step backward as a result of our not having a competent offensive framework. There are flashes. I hope the team is frustrated. I would love it if they held a Players Only Meeting, got together in a ballroom and mapped out some of their own favorite plays from previous teams, and secretly called them during games... Of course, then Red would get the credit and an extension, sooooo... maybe not.

I don’t want to get too excited before it’s confirmed but I think we may no longer be dead last nationally in free throw shooting come tomorrow.

God I’m getting emotional just typing that.
And the fans won Chick Fil A two games in a row. Life is good!

About the offense and things I can't get excited about until they happen more than once. For now I will call it fool's gold. ...

- Free throw shooting is this something new, or just a one-off? We made a lot early and missed some in middle made some more late. I imagine we are not as good as we were toda,y but not as bad as we have been.

-George is driving and being aggressive. Will this continue? He did pick up it towards the end of last year maybe he is just getting going. Or or was this game a product of just having a weaker and less athletic person on him, whom he can bully around?

Kiyan - Similar to George, those drives to the basket were not working before when he was against more athletic players, and he couldn't turn the corner on his drives. Did he make an adjustment, or again a product of being matched up against someone less skilled physically and not able to properly guard him.

Still lots of turnovers and 3 point shooting was terrible. So George and Anthony winning one one-on-one battles isn't a long-term recipe for success on offense, especially as we move into the ACC play.

Definitely agree with this. Autry loves to talk about “putting pressure on the rim”. So far, from what I can tell, that just means George, Kiyan, JJ, etc. playing iso ball and trying to bull rush their way to the basket. Not a recipe for success.

I’d love to believe Autry was just playing mad scientist with substitutions because he knew we had this game in the bag because if not, it was coaching malpractice. Every time we had them on the ropes he hit the self‑destruct button. Momentum rolling and and boom he yanks the lineup and blows up the rhythm like it's a preseason scrimmage.
Red doesn't have any feel for substitutions. He is horrible at it.

Scored 91. No problem with the offense.

Seriously, it’s hard to care at this point. I spent most of the afternoon watching football.

This team has enough talent to beat some decent ACC teams. Doesn’t seem like they have the focus and energy to do that consistently through 18 games though.

Guess we’ll see. Whatevs.

Yep, when Donnie is back for ACC action we have a solid 8.5 man rotation. We’ll either finish in the top 5-6 of the conference and go to the NCAA tournament or we’ll be searching for a new coach. (Or both).

I remember this past summer when some on this board really thought Melo was going to call plays for Kiyan during games. Maybe he actually should call them for the team and guys just ignore Red. Melo must be so frustrated watching this crap.

Do you think Kyle is complaining that he is tired? I can’t understand why he is taken out when he is playing great. Is Red afraid Kyle is going to GET tired and takes him out BEFORE he gets tired? Because that is not working.

Have you looked at what the other ACC teams are doing? We have struggled against the type of teams that almost every ACC tean has blown out. Outside of BC, Pitt, Fla St and maybe WF who do you think we’re definitely better than?

Guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Only 8 assists, 6 by 1 player, is pretty crazy.
Remember how Lampkin alone would have two amazing passes every game, and now it’s difficult to remember the last time we had one. I guess I’m discounting the Oops to Kyle, which almost never seem to actually be good passes—just Big Bad Bill making sweet results.

If we can’t tinker against Northeastern, we have bigger issues than any of the solutions might address.

And that’s what disillusions me the past two weeks.

Still time. George looked good. Need Freeman. And don’t be fooled…the offense today can’t win in the ACC; ball movement in the half court needs to get 10x better. Assuming the poor defense today was temporary, but not a good sign.

How many times were we up double digits and then let the lead slip? Agree with an earlier post about the descriptive substitution patterns. Perhaps is a subtle way of Autry of letting players know he will be lowering minutes. The runs to single digits happened with mostly non starters on the court.

One play that is effective against us are teams overloading one side and rotate the ball quickly to opposite side for a wide open 3 as an SU forward that pinched in, desperately scampering to the corner. Ty his rotation we do not anticipate well at all.

One of the announcers stated that SU has good players but not a Killer Instinct. Something to the effect that we should be burring inferior teams at home. I agree. ( it was mentioned by someone in an earlier post as well). We as fans are tired of moral victories.

I do believe that Red is load managing some of the starters. Particularly William Kyle. We will need him at full strength in Late January and February to be fresh. What happened With JJ. Last few games he starts off hot and disappears.

We won, we scored 91 points, we were up double digits, yet I’m not satisfied. Is it because they did not cover? Or is it that I’m afraid to admit that the flaws I’m subconsciously seeing will keto this team out of March Madness? Just like last year, I’m giving this team until Jan 1. Or February 1, or March 1. I’m an SU fan. To quote that emotional delivery from Billy Beane from Money Ball “You may not look like a winning team, But you are one ( 👊 pump), So play like one tonight. 😂

GO CUSE

We spend more time dribbling than passing. Northeastern ran offense and was playing together. Another big issue we have is whenever any of our guys take it to the basket it always is going to be a shot. There’s zero reason not to help off anyone because we’ve made the decision to shoot as soon as we start taking it to the cup.

The passing has vanished. Earlier in the year I think I posted how this team seemed more willing to facilitate this year. Now there is no ball movement.
Who wasn’t playing early in the year? The offense immediately changed when he went out yesterday and we seemed to get more flow. Look at the box scores and statistics of our team. Player I won’t name has been the worst player overall in our rotation this year.
