Northeastern Postgame

Embarrassing for any team to give up 14 offensive rebounds and 21 fast break points, including at least three times being caught flat footed allowing a Northeastern player to sneak behind the entire team for an easy score. Or getting mixed up on defense allowing four or five wide open three point baskets. It's amazing how opponents can score on wide open shots but Syracuse can't.

Congrats to Will Kyle, who I believe was perfect on his first five free throw attempts, but then 1 for 7 after that. That's as bad as the random dude out of the stands trying to win an interior car wash.

And, I don't want to be Scrooge this time of year, but someone please gift Siddiq some strength and confidence out there. He's playing like a 7th grader going against college players. How does that even happen. At least, Red did the right thing limiting his minutes and we saw some aspects of Tyler Betsey's game that we did not know existed.

I love the passion of the B'ville band playing during school breaks, but I don't get why they don't allow them to play a few holiday tunes. Maybe they can get the crowd energized with a little Jingle Bell Rock.

I'm sure they are allowed to play them. (I think they played the Charlie Brown Christmas theme.) But they probably focused their rehearsals on pep band music.

I’ll be honest. Couldn’t watch because of family Christmas things with the boys. But based on box scores. Seems like we only won this game because we actually made some free throws. Potentially lose if we shoot our typical average?

8 assists for the entire game? That’s a recipe for success!! They say things come back every 20 years right? We’re ahead of the curve!!

Or Sadiq is still sick... You ever play basketball sick? Bottom line, we don't really know what we're talking about. They keep all this stuff a secret so no one gets a pass. Maybe we should be thanking Sadiq for a yeoman's effort. So, we've lost our depth, maybe our health, maybe we'll go on a roll... We can make a game of it with anybody, good or bad...

Definitely some Tortoise and the Hare going on, but that's partly the coach, too.

Yea yeah yeah, the whole team has been a sick for a month supposedly. The excuse only works for so long

Newhouser and CU44SE hit it on the head. Abysmal ball movement, and what the fluck is with this 8 assists on 27 FGs? That's hero ball. Bad hoops.

I love watching Kyle and want to see these kids succeed. But this is super hard to watch.

It's well documented that no one on the other team is ever sick. Also, no one on the other team is banged up, no one on the other team has gone through finals, no one on the other team has personal issues, and no one on the other team needs time to figure things out. Our opponents are like cyborgs with no weaknesses to exploit.

Seriously, all those things can be legit reasons for poor performance. We also seem to be in Quad 1 of excuse making, and have been for years.

Yes, not good. But hero ball allowed the Cuse to win the game at the FT line. The team shot 48 free throws. If we shot closer to 55%, it could have been a loss. 14 missed FT's, but only one down the stretch.

Let's give credit to Red for having the right guys on the court and getting the ball in the right hands. In the last 1:40, the team shot 11-12 from the line. It could have gotten a lot tighter.

Expect to see similar strategy the rest of the season.

I am not worried about the number of assist. The matchup yesterday called for more iso ball. Getting fouled during the last few minutes eliminates the opportunity for assist too. The best play yesterday was isolating George and Anthony and letting them attack. Kid guarding Nathan was a good offensive guard but looked and played defense like a little kid.

Have you looked at what the other ACC teams are doing? We have struggled against the type of teams that almost every ACC tean has blown out. Outside of BC, Pitt, Fla St and maybe WF who do you think we’re definitely better than?
I've said my piece about the direction of things and it's not good but I need to refute this circular reference that so many ACC teams are better than us because of this or that. We are only 1 of 5 ACC teams that have actually beaten a ranked team. Outside of Duke, Louisville, and UNC we are also the only team that has played 3 ranked opponents, 4 if you count Kansas that "dipped" out of the rankings for the few days when we played them and are back to #17...

Cal who is some crazy success story at 10-1 has not won a game away from home and has played 10 home games and 1 away game so far. Virginia and VaTech haven't played a ranked team at all yet, not even close to one.

I think the writing is on the wall for Autry but I also think we will beat alot of the middle of the ACC and not be a bottom feeder like last year. Problem is that 10-8 and an 8 seed in the tourney isn't enough anyway. Even sneaking into the tourney play in game is garbage with this roster.

It's like the team only wanted to play hard to get one good win and once they beat Tennessee they were like "Alright that's it for the year". Hopefully we get Donnie back and get into the ACC schedule and they snap out of whatever this has been. The early part of the year was the most fun team we've had in a long time.

Eventually, JW will realize that a lot of other people are sick...of losing and poor play. When the paid attendance drops to its lowest in 40+ years. It's not a good trend. And it can't just be the fans that are recognizing it.

Remember how Lampkin alone would have two amazing passes every game, and now it’s difficult to remember the last time we had one. I guess I’m discounting the Oops to Kyle, which almost never seem to actually be good passes—just Big Bad Bill making sweet results.
Well the nice looking kickout passes only look good when the wide open shooter makes it. The way we were getting to the line and actually making their FT's I'm pretty sure they just stopped even looking to pass. It's a problem. These games are not helping us.

We spend more time dribbling than passing. Northeastern ran offense and was playing together. Another big issue we have is whenever any of our guys take it to the basket it always is going to be a shot. There’s zero reason not to help off anyone because we’ve made the decision to shoot as soon as we start taking it to the cup.
This looks like mod basketball. Bunch of guys who aren't good taking turns being the I GOT THIS guy while everyone else stands and watches

I mentioned in game thread that I sat first row behind the SU bench yesterday. Here’s a few things -
1. The guys are very engaged at the beginning of the game. The first 2 media timeouts, red was yelling at them “listen up, listen up, listen up and then went nuclear and said are you listening?!” It’s like they didn’t even care who they were playing or what they were being told
2. When they were losing, the players didn’t talk to each other at all. When winning, they were talking constantly
3. The bench is so supportive including Donnie. Constantly cheering and “defense chant” throughout the entire game
4. Red is always looking to make a substitute and I don’t understand why. It’s like he feels bad that certain guys aren’t playing or something. He needs to have a much better feel for the clock because every other possession he is looking to put someone in. Hes gotta be better with this. It’s like the game is moving wayyyy too fast for him
5. Brenden S Drew up defenses constantly in huddles and was yelling from the bench exactly what play NE was running and the guys just simply didn’t listen. He was getting annoyed as was I when literally he’s given them the answers to the test and they still weren’t acing it
6. Red said “Akir is just so light” to the coaches meaning he couldn’t hold his ground on some fouls
7. Donnie was highlight dunking in layup line and crowd and players were going nuts so that was good
8. Drives me crazy there are no ticket promotions or anything for these snooze fest games. There was 6 or 7 sections that didn’t have a person in them. Get creative and sell more tickets.
9. Red stressed “constant on ball and on man pressure” constantly throughout the game and timeouts. He kept saying that’s where the cuts were hurting them and getting them layups and open looks.
10. This is me not defending Red, but these kids act like they don’t need coaching. They really do. They probably listened to the coaching staff 25% of the time. I’m not even kidding. Maybe it was the opponent but the amount of effort was significant from red and especially BS, he was all over these guys with a great plan and they didn’t really listen.

I strongly encourage during these types of non conference games that if you can get to sit anywhere near the bench, you would see a lot of stuff you can’t see on tv.

Thinking the same. Doesn't seem like we care, basically 5 look ahead games. We saw this for Monmouth too. They were playing half half ass then too waiting to get after Houston. Then again we saw them give up against Iowa St and rebound for Tennessee.

I have no doubt we're going to steal a win or 2 against the top of the ACC but it's just a waste cuz we'll drop more Q3 games looking ahead to the next big game.

Great post. Reinforces my thought that Red is clearly smart enough to know what needs to be done but simply isn't a good enough teacher and coach to get the players to do it. Some people just don't command attention; Red seems to be among them. His staff as well.

And I'm putting it on him because this is year 3 of it. Not just a few guys on one team, but a couple dozen different players over 3 years all ignoring him.

Thanks for the info. Certain NBA teams do the same things with substitutes. Its like clockwork. Like no one rewards or punishes good or bad play.

#3 is where I really hope Donnie being on the court makes a difference especially defensively. I felt in preseason that Nate George and Donnie just had to be the leaders and best guys on the court playing 36-38 mins a game. I'm just happy there's only 1 more of these snoozefests coming Monday and we don't need to watch a game during Christmas and be annoyed.

Solid post BullDong6969. Keep it up.

I think it's more understandable in the NBA. No one game in an 82 game regular season is terribly important, and typically a coach's top job is to appropriately manage the minutes of their best players.

It's funny because when I look at the box score after games our minutes allocation usually makes sense. But how Red gets there can be baffling sometimes.

He substitutes when he shouldn’t and he lets guys stay in when they don’t hustle.

My theory is that #4 is affecting 1,2,5,9, and 10.
