He seemed to phone this one in, especially down the stretch. As someone else said in the chat, he looked almost disinterested. Odd.

I disagree. UNC just made plays when they needed them. The players decided this one, and UNC has the better players.

We're a mediocre team that took a top 10 team, potential 1-seed, down to the wire, on the road, on senior night. I'll take that.

This teams execution down the stretch made no sense. I would of kept running a high ball screen with Lydon and have him pop as Silent G was coming off him. Especially for that last play. Rather then have Silent G run right into the help off zero action.

Should have called a TO, imo absolutely critical to go over w the players that they are down 3 , very little time left and what the strategy needs to be. The great coaches usually call a to there. Otherwise i thought he coached a good game and out coached roy as usual

We did keep running it but after lydon made the 3, G never threw it back to lydon even though he was open every time

i a little surprised that royboy with all his depth didn't press us early each half just to wear our guards down. neither cooney or (g) has a great handle and unc has the size back even if they do break out.

JB never calls a TO in that situation. Considering G got a pretty high percentage look at the rim that would have pulled us within 1 with 10 seconds left, I'm good with it.

How many times is JB down 3 w 10 secs to go? Never a great idea in sports to over generalize because most times the best decision is entirely dependent on the exact situation

Often enough that I know he's not going to call a TO. I can't point to specific press conferences, but I'm confident he's said he prefers to let the players stay in the flow of the game in late game situations. I'm not going to say he's not a great X's and O's coach, but drawing up plays is not Jim's main strength (not that he can't do it). He recruits athletes. I say, let them be athletes.

He's right though, JB tends to allow the action to play out and doesn't tend to call time outs to set up the play.

love ya iommi, but this thread is What material

I like stirring the pot on occasion. Someone in the chat room mentioned that JB looked disinterested and I ran with it.:p But I did think JB didn't manage the game well in the closing minutes. And his substitution pattern was very odd all game. Seemed kind of random.

I like the strategy there too. I'm thinking maybe that was talked about during the previous timeout.
Get the ball up the court quickly and hope to get a high percentage shot before UNC has a chance to setup their D.
If G makes that shot with 10 seconds left, get a quick foul and we've got a chance for another possession for either a tie or the win.
tough break that shot didn't go down for him.

Yeah i agree. But at same time an athlete in real time cant process exactly how much time is left and the implications of being down 3 has; and what play or move JB would want in that situation. But yes in the end G made a good move, could have been fouled. Just didnt finish and unfort wasnt even close to finishing. Ball barely touched rim. But it was a good move to begin with

first half I think he was trying to get guys as much rest as possible (which his legion of critics should have loved)... I don't know, he had his team within one possession inside a minute on the home court of probably the best team in the country - really hard to criticize that

I don't believe that coaches can call timeouts anymore. Only players.

This.

They can't. G was on the other side of the court. Never looked to coach. Never saw to see if he wanted a timeout. Not sure that JB would have called one, but if he wanted one,,,, it has to be called by the player.

But it's JBs fault.

G had a great opportunity. He simply missed.

JB didn't seem like he wanted a TO. I liked the play by G, just didn't get the roll.

Certain coaches run on court and make sure the players know. Ie dixon, buzz, cal, etc etc etc. but yes i agree not JBs style

JB: "We had it set up for him to look for a three in transition. I think he felt he had to get all the way, then we take a time out and we foul and we have a chance to come back. You have to use your best judgement there and he thought he could get to the basket."
