Notre Dame Gameday...

It's almost an entirely new group of contributors, many of whom are still young and/or inexperienced. The gap in physicality and mentality between guys that are 18-19 and ones that are 21-22 (or older given the COVID reset) is vast. Winning at this level is a learned trait (and its a combination of mentality and physicality).

How many grad students, seniors, and juniors are contributing right now? Compare that to what is being run out at the teams that are beating us. Compare that to what's on the field at UVA and Notre Dame.

I think the team has it's level- ahead of pretty much all mid majors, but a notch below the major programs, and two notches below the best programs. Let's see what the progression is next season and the one after. Win the next three. And then find a way to win two or more out of Princeton and the remaining ACC games without being completely blown off the field, and I'd call it a successful step forward.

I'll save myself the time of reposting this.

so is that really the rule in LAx that it has to be a loose ball to be a goal? I know its not the rule in Hockey in a goalies glove. but thats a crazy rule that you dont actually have to keep the ball from crossing the line.. Im not even sire how that works with a ball rolling around in a hude lax net?

They're saying that he made the save outside the net, and his backwards momentum carried his stick and the ball past the plane.

If the ball bounced off his stick into the goal it would have counted.

Do you think it’s gait or Petro (recognizing if it’s Petro it’s ultimately on Gait too).

I think both are good coaches but theres to much reactionary stuff that people on this board are seeing long before the staff is.

Two examples, last year it was clear to anyone who followed SU that the team needed major help in the portal and the schedule needed a dialing back. Gait adds no one and puts Maryland on the schedule. Later admits he made a major mistake.

This year its clear SU needs multiple reinforcements at Fogo and goalie. SU addresses goalie with Mark (great call) but we bring only one transfer Fogo who was 50% at Canisius and has been if we're being Honest a disaster as the #1 with the schedule. It was clear we needed multiple portal options at the X and again the Staff was MIA.

Gary flipped Finn Yes? I know what you are saying though. The 24's are very underrated by IL. There are early impact players in this class too.

Gary flipped Thomson and Figuerias. Both great players but 90% of the class was Desko. Were also playing Thomson out of position, yet another game where he was scoreless 6 on 6.

even on the replay it looks like its a goal.

i would question why the rule is so stupid.. what other sport has that rule.

no soccer or hockey or water polo where you can possess the ball across a line.

But its another example of why dont that have cameras in place for this stuff.. the lax goal is in the same place every game so put a static camera on the line like hockey does.

Know the struggle at faceoffs got to find another ways to get ball not just mark saves. We have to start pressuring on d more going for take aways. Also ground balls still just not good. Think was dame 33 to us 19. Also noticed a lot of guys at times not fully hustling. This is why say early on play couple more guys so by end of game dudes arnt absolutely gassed. Our short stick mids also have to do better. Grant will say def two of dames goals were due to broken sticks and guys having to run off. But this defense to me seems improved from last year not perfect but improved. Their also very young and playing together for first time this year. But we def gotta close out games start out fast or least not in a hole. Wing play def needs to be way better.

Well should be reviews or challenges during game believe also. Should of had this back when gave uva a goal in playoffs thay clearly went off a post. Even if don’t stop play and booth reviews and then calls down stairs to say ok call was wrong or right . But ncaa clearly needs work on their issues also .

This staff has no answers they didnt even try anything different I was all for Gait after Desko was gone but they didn’t even try to stop that run in the 4th Imagine what Petro’s defense would look like without Mark bailing them out. I’d say it would be identical to the 4th quarter
Total incompetence, if not malpractice, not calling timeouts during the ND run.

I have serious reservations about Gary Gait as the HC of this team.
I have doubts that he can actually coach. He does nothing on the sidelines. Last year he lost the team mid-season. I fear he may have lost this year's team in the 4th qtr.

The staff responded like deer in the headlights why are we surprised when the players do too if this team goes on another losing streak to end the season I could see what talent there is start jumping into the portal this is a very different day and age
Unfortunately I agree.

They couldn't call timeout, they didn't have possession in the box. Rosa got stuck in no mans land and no one came to help him. Unfortunately it's been something we've seen a lot of lately, guys not coming to the ball carrier and just quick running off to sub.
Can they call timeout after a goal is scored?

I saw Gary do lots of great coaching on the women’s side but I think he is relying to much on his assistant coaches He needs to take charge these young players need him

God damn we are so close. Being there if felt like the vast majority of the game we were right there with them and looking just as good. Goes without saying the final score does not tell the whole story. It was pretty electric most of the game. Spirits were high. Even early I thought the offense was getting looks but not finishing. Then they really put it together for a stretch. Not an easy task against ND. The D it felt like they were more just hanging on with the help of Mark, but it was enough to stay in it.

Whatever BS there was with the Thomson shot, how about you just finish the freaking look on the doorstep and leave no doubt. Just insane it wasnt a clean finish in the first place. So much talent and he messes that one up. Was almost more mad with the loose ball push call on the other end right after. D was so worn down and then it was just over with the stretch at the X.

On D it really feels like we dont have the athletes to roll with these top teams. But it also feels like we cant slide in an organized way and slide to damn much. It's tough to watch. We look scared and slide before even thinking. But you almost cant blame it because guys lose a step easily. I said before we need to be putting up like 15 plus to steal one against a top team this year. It still seems that way. It will get better with personnel, but I just dont have total faith on that end of things. We need to hit the portal at ssdm next season at minimum. The depth there is not getting it done.

The O feels like its in a pretty good spot and they put on a show for a good stretch of the game there. I dont think the loose style burns us too often. The future is still looking real bright there. Having guys with elite stick skills and feeding share the ball is paying dividends. Just enough dodging to make it work. Still having bad decisions cost us at times. Spallina overall had a great game as well as Kirst Simmons and Leo.

The face offs late most of them the wings couldnt help much and the one where they did we just throw it away to give us truly no chance. Just dont have the horses in the middle and its tough to watch late in games. A lot of guys just overused because we feel we cant afford to play the backups. I get that, but if Rosa is completely beyond gassed where he cant even run away from a guy then how do we have him on the wing? You have to be real about the effects of fatigue and play back ups even if you dont fully trust them.

Its a really tough opponent and we held our own. Didnt wilt after getting punched early. After today I still think it is possible to steal a game against a top team. I like what Im seeing on O. Think we can keep the head up today.

Total incompetence, if not malpractice, not calling timeouts during the ND run.
Is the rule that you have to possess the ball in the offensive side of the field to call time out?

I come here after not having much thought for coaching outside of some of the D's rotations/personnel choices and here its all about coaching. At the very least I was fine with everything I saw as far as game plan etc on offense. Idk. A little too down in the dumps over here. Use more guys on the wings, but losing faceoffs clean is the bigger issue.
