Notre Dame Gameday...

We need to play few more guys on D early on in game maby even little bit early in 3rd. Know ochoa still hurt guess but if he comes back gotta give him few runs. Why not throw out 32 n flilardi like we have early in season? Been a brutal schedule n guys are clearly worn down n hurting n getting tired. Have to spread our roster little bit help keep guys fresh. Why say do it early in first half even early in 3rd qtr. I also agree let angelo take more faceoffs even few in row n see what happens. Specially when mullen violates sit him for a few. Have to try anything n everything to find the spark to start playing a lot better.

Guys just seem way to tired n can’t go full game. Can’t keep running same few players out everytime for everything n expect them to be full go. As said depth will be huge come may not just depth of scoring which needs to happen also. How bout throw a zone here n there randomly specially when guys little winded n shot clock is low. Need least 1 def 2 more dmid guys getting runs. Spallina, kittle , bowen n mccarthy our way to much. If need to as said if ochoa still hurt put bolonino with shorty n have 32(dagastino think?) or flilardi at lsm just to give little breather on dmids. Hahn should worried more bout O has seems he hasn’t done much on O prob cause running two way to much n spent when gets on O. Same goes for hottle have seen him jogging back on D to many times specially when ball is just ahead of him but he’s to tired to sprint to catch up.

Does it really seem smart running the same guys out there over n over n over again when their getting beat cause just tired n already losing? I like beck but yea he just to slow n doesn’t play his angles good enough to make up for it. Guess really only thing can do is bump chuck K down low again but then hurts our transition or poles for good midfielders. As said could still run bolonino flirardi n d’agostino maby even sageder at lsm. Either way neee to change things when things are going off the rails n stop just pushing the same old tricks that haven’t been working. Someone on that sideline has got to want to make a play or else need a new better roster. Same goes for the O try someone.

kellogg hasn’t done much lately tho can see he doesn’t feel comfortable with ball in his hands prob cause he’s not fast. So how bout having a set play (same goes for rhoa) where ya set them up for a shot? The free flowing style only works when it’s working but when not need to have some set of plays to get the mojo going. Why suggested moving leo baxk to midfield as feel holds ball way to much n isn’t moving off ball enough like hiltz did. Leo just stay mostly on that left wing n also doesn’t hustle a lot at times. Throw a 3 midfield line early in game as seen other teams do so. All just to hope for something positive but mostly giving your main guys little more of breather.

That game today was winning able without a doubt. They were dead out of the second half n that seems to be when the mistakes ramp up. So there are least two ways to counter that. 1 is as i said play more guys early giving guys more rest time. Or 2 run them a lot at pratice get them good n tired then have them play scrimmage while dog tired n keep doing it. Meaning run them then scrimmage run them then scrimmage. So they get use to or muscle memory when their tired. By scrimmage mean themslves clearly. Need better conditioning. As this team hasn’t played a full 60min game yet. Best i can day is they have had 1 or 2 good 3qtr games but never full.

Also would work a ton a ton on gbs. Even if drill is 4 guys to 1 n the 1 needs to get ball. Cause by gosh is the gb play terrible. Also our dodgers have to start knifing in n stop going out. Know defense coming but further out you go the more the whole dodge is useless cause not a threat. Can we also not telegraph our picks so much. Seems so easy for teams to see n play our picks while our defense has hard time dealing with them. So much just so much to be worked on n should been all season not having to try to fix so much at this point n time. Still the biggest thing is have to play with heart and hustle. Got to want it more then the other team n take it from them. Can’t just sit back n think will come to you.

I do not feel confident going into acc tounry or even ncaa tounry. If this team can’t play how they do at home away from dome there is no shot. One of the seniors better call a meeting of the whole team n would suggest yelling n asking them what is it you wanna do. Do you wanna go home right now n call it quits. Or do you wanna start playing like D1 syracuse lacrosse players n start fing crap up ?

Is it fair to say at this point that Gary's teams just don't improve very much during the course of the season and that 1) this is what differentiates them from the best teams in the country and 2) this is likely more about coaching than personnel?

Last year's team beat ND, Duke, and Princeton in May.

Mullen works worn out, simply has taken to many draws. Looks like Ben Williams in his Sr year. Need to give Angelo more looks.
No kidding I said that before- and how long is Angelo gonna stick around? Could be starting elsewhere

Very good point but was this just the kind of randomly variable excellence that the team exhibits, extended somewhat longer than usual, rather than the steady, reliable progress that some other teams display over the course of the season? Also, I think those were all very close games which perhaps involved some good fortune and which ended with a decisive loss to the Terps, a team that has a history of improving during the season...but not every season.

So true, but the trajectory of SU lax forever changed when the Thompson twins picked Albany over Syracuse, when Syracuse couldn’t get Austin Staats to transfer in from OCC, and when Lars Tiffany wasn’t hired as the SU coach (I realize that Lars is not Native American, but he grew up with the Onondaga people). Those were the notable most recent Native American misses that SU had.

Another deflating game (although really just the 2nd half), but fortunately the season is not over, we’ll be in the playoffs, and there is no dominant team this year, so any team who gets hot can win it all (including us!)

The bad news:
-Our SSDMs, other than Kittelberg (who is awesome!, a future all-American and also one of the best SSDMs that SU has ever had) were atrocious. J Spallina, Bowen, and McCarthy all got killed today
-Our pick defense was horrible. The ND entire offense was just attacking our SSDMs and doing pick plays
-Beck got exposed today, in terms of being too slow to stay with a player 1v1 and also losing his man
-Rhoa was awful. 8 outside shots, only 3 were on cage, and 0 goals
-Mullen was again under 50%. I’ve literally never seen a college lacrosse player get worse during their career. To go from 63% face off win percentage last year to 53% this year is just weird. I’ve seen a lot of things, but not that…
-Figueiras even got beat multiple times. If our best 1v1 long pole is getting, then we’re in big trouble
-Our 2nd line Middies contributed nothing today, literally nothing
-We didn’t lose the game cuz of the refs, but they were Horrible today!
-We slip a lot on grass fields (not as much today as against UNC), but our coaches and equipment managers better figure things out if we make it to Final Four (which will be played on a grass field at UVA)

The good news:
-Anderson and Hottle are both studs, and they’re the only 2 players we have who can win a 1v1 matchup and score or draw a slide (if teams put poles on them, then we’re in Big trouble)
-McCool was really good (18 saves!)
-Kuczynski played well
-Leo looked good

Let’s just stay healthy in the ACC tournament. I don’t really care if we win the tournament like last year or lose in the 1st round, and let’s just get ready for this playoff run!! Go SU lax!!

Missing out on the Thompsons & Lars Tiffany are probably more than this program can handle.

Seems like the timing was wrong with Tiffany. Nobody was ready to get rid of Desko yet.

The Thompsons is just a miss. I have had it explained to me before, but TBH, its just a miss. The two to three Tewarrtons. The run in the NCAAs we didn't get. The players thst followed them to Albany. They were replaced w a coaches kid & someone else who weren't in the same league. The10+ years of star power they've had.

Promising hire w Gait, but his teams are plagued w sloppiness & seemingly lack toughness or drive.

UAlbany:
2011: 5-10
2012: 5-11
2013: 13-5. Lost 1st Rd game to Denver
2014: 12-6. Lost to ND in Qtrs.

4 years, 1 NCAA win.

Since we were well below .500 in FO % during that period, the Thompsons would have looked great standing around while we were on defense.

Rough outing. I don't think its as doom and gloom as some are making it out to be. 11-4 with this schedule is a very respectable outcome. Who knows, maybe we'll get bonked again on Friday.

Some thoughts in no particular order:
1. Lack of help on offense. Our younger guys have almost a year under there belt now, it is do or die time. If you want to win in May you need unknown commodities to step up. Unfortunately we're not trending in the right direction here. McIntee is a bit of a stormtrooper it seems with his shot thus far. After that laser goal against Maryland I was excited, maybe a bit less so now. It seems like Hahn is getting some more responsibility similar to how we used to Sam English or Jake Stevens. I don't know if this is hurting him offensively or not. Kellogg moves like a tank and not in a good way, where is the strength and conditioning. We hear a lot about his shot but in an ACC game you're going to need to create some sort of separation.

2. Uncle Leo. I'm fairly certain he sat out some time in fall ball or maybe it was the spring scrimmages with an injury. I wonder if he's not 100%. He has looked very slow at times this season. Perhaps he is a bit of a known entity at this point. It just feels like whoever is guarding him just completely disrespects his right hand drives him left, he rolls back with one hand on his stick and the play dies there.

3. Lack of dodging. This obviously and quite glaringly has been an issue with this Senior group since Day 1. It is jarring to watch our SSDMs routinely get run by and then on the other side of the field ever SSDM looks like Aidan McGuire.

4. Our turnovers are so untimely. Its one thing to lose a risky pass to an open guy on the crease or get stripped forcing a dodge at the end of a shot clock. These consistent killing failed clears, offsides, or whatever else just torpedo our momentum. Defense must want to rip their hair out, thought they're not guiltless today.

5. Mullen is odd this year. Teams have more film on him sure, but he just seems to overrun so many ground balls. Wing play is general has been pretty bad. Lack of a second FOGO certainly hurts as well. Angelo has shown moments, but we'll see I suppose.

Notre Dame is the one seed, but UNC, Syracuse, and UVA are all 2-2 in this scenario. Record against the top team is the first tiebreaker. Virginia beat Notre Dame, while the other two both lost. So the seed order goes Notre Dame, Virginia, North Carolina, Syracuse.
Head-to-head is always the first tiebreaker in the ACC in all sports.

Come on. Angelo looked like Gruden trying to pick up a GB today. Where is he starting?
Gruden was so funny in that, it was a laugh fest, "Syracuse is a bunch of bad asses in lacrosse..." LMAO.

I don’t think it’s about Albany becoming a better lacrosse program then Syracuse. It’s that the growth of another competitive Upstate NY D1 lacrosse program took away star players that likely would have otherwise played at SU. In the 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s, nearly all of the top Upstate NY high school lacrosse players (including Native Americans) that wanted to play in Upstate NY in front of their family’s went to SU. Once the Thompson twins chose Albany, they built up a program that could compete with SU (not necessarily for more wins, but for top players). Lyle Thompson, Miles Thompson, Connor Fields, Blaze Riorden, and Jake Piseno… If those players went to SU and not Albany (as probably would have happened in the 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s) then SU’s last chip probably is not in ‘09 (regardless of FO percentage)

What were the issues with the Thompson brothers?

Before they went back down to Lafayette they were up here at Salmon River and put up psychotic numbers.

Great comparison! Spot on. Ben Williams FO percentage also dropped significantly during his career. I forgot about that. Brady Wambach is a beast FO specialist and an exception to the rule (like a Baptiste or an Ierlan). Why did Mullen have to take so many FOs this year, especially in games where we were way ahead? It’s too late now, but it would have been nice to have a more fresh FO specialist going in to the playoffs

I don't really think it is an apt comparison at all. Williams got hurt at some point. I don't remember the game because it feels like ages ago, but after a face-off he ran off the field holding his shoulder and was literally never the same. Mullen's issues this year are not physical.

Well Angelo is extremely inconsistent and Olenik is not ready, we should have had a better 3rd option realistically, but it's hard to get guys in the portal knowing they will be FOGO3
