I'm telling you that Dungey is a cool customer. Not one who should be starting at this point - but a cool customer.

Limited reps, but what I saw I was very impressed. Cool customer is a good label. Seemed very fluid, and everything came natural. Small things stood out like on the screen pass where he didn't wait for him to be open, but threw it when he knew he was about to turn around. Definitely needs some size, but he gives us something to look forwarrd to.

I thought Perkins looked good in the 7 v 7 portion.

First, if you have kids that are into sports and Cuse this event as it was put on this year is a must. Double if your a season ticket holder. It was a well run event that moved very well despite the brief shower. Everyone was extremely inviting that worked the event.

My day in a bunch of unrelated sentences. They had uniforms and helmets for the kids to try on. I got to throw a football in the IPF with my boys. A few in the dirt and a few on the money. Kicked a FG from the 10 yard line fwiw. Kids kicked soccer balls with the women's soccer team and at their goalie.

Brought one son to the bouncy houses and then we all met and grabbed a pic with Floyd Little who was walking around the event. Had a 44 jersey on at the time. That guy is great for the program. Walked by Robert Drummond and his son on way to BBQ which was free if you have season tick. Food was good enough and you could have ample portions and soda. No beer served on premises. The staff passing out water bottles to people waiting in line was a nice touch as it was humid at times.

Within 5 minutes of sitting down at our table to eat and the AD taps me on shoulder and introduces self to me and my group. Was unexpected. He's a guy that's hard not to like. Said he wants a strong local fanbase. It's real early but I hope we struck gold with this guy.

Got rained on a bit but stuck it out. Watched about half of mens soccer game that was an exhibition with Georgetown. The game seemed to be played at a high level. Didn't make it to the woman's field hockey as there was to much to do at times.

Watched the scrimmage from bleachers as it gave better perspective to the field. I'll let others discuss the football aspect of it as that's not the purpose of my post.

After game we were allowed full field access with the whole team and staff and every player was made available to fans and their children. My kids absolutely loved it.

I had a pic with my boys and HCSS and exchanged a few words briefly. I told him I loved how he talked about character and preached hard work and responsibility. He was very gracious and thankful to the fans.

My boys got alot of good pics with players who were all warm and welcoming. Met to many to name them all. Made sure to meet DL Clark who was extremely polite. At the end they took a group pic in the middle of the field with all the kids and the whole team. It was a great photo op.

I've gone on long enough and probably way to much detail but really want all that are in driving distance to understand what a fun day this is for fans of all ages. Everyone should go to Fanfest if this is how its going to be run and you have the opportunity. Heard from some fans that had been to prior Fanfest that this one was done very well. Kudos to the program and University for putting on a fine event. Got me psyched up and ready for the season. I am really happy I went. My first one and it was a success.

Go Cuse!

I second, third, fourth and fifth this post...perfect representation as to what went on there. People were great, both the fans and the folks from SU.

Great event!

I just wanted to say, as someone who could not attend the event... it is so REFRESHING to see posts about an event related to Syracuse football program being praised by fans and everyone who attended. I'm basking in the glow right now:E

Beautiful evening for football. Rainbow appeared right before kickoff and the breeze was wonderful. Christian and Jewish traditions teach that the rainbow was a promise from God to mankind after the flooding of the world that he would never flood the world again. It was a covenant made to man that there are new and wonderful beginnings and the old can be washed away. One could speculate and wonder if this is an omen for the upcoming season.

Many season ticket holders moved to the bleachers as the season ticket side had people sitting below the offensive players and the sun was setting in the eyes of the fans on that side.

First few things I noticed:

  • I don't know how much of a write up we will get from Bam as his hands were full with JJ and he was chasing him around most of the game. couchburn
  • Mr. Daddy Deurig is huge. He might have been the biggest man on the field during the after game promotions.
  • Much to the whizzbang fruitdeloop supercalifraglisticexpealadocious Bud the bobacious bumbles demise, we should already be pursuing Young Pickard as the kid is going to be a big boy by the time he hits senior year. Write me an article about that brosephus. The Pickard boys are very close as Jake was hanging out and getting his younger brothers involved.
  • Nick Robinson has a beautiful young family. I assume the lady that was with him was his wife and the most adorable little girl he was holding the whole time was his daughter. Seems like a great father and husband/bf. (character)
  • Missy was super cordial with the fans stopping to talk to anyone who approached her.
  • Elsa seems to be an amazing young lady and spent a good bit of time playing with Acosta's little girls who are adorable. She is awesome with children.
  • SS really put an emphasis on getting involved with families and was eager to get down on one knee and take pictures with the wee ones.
  • The Shafers' really are amazing people. Didn't see Wolfgang as he has been at these things in the past. I assume he is at IC camp preparing to lose to Cortland again this year... Go Dragons!
  • The staff really is really high character and they practice what they preach. The whole program is family orientated and you see the brotherhood in the team.
  • I was walking by the players as they came on and off the field and they are a tight nit group and it mirrors the type of people the staff are.
  • I am just going to throw this out here but I could see a wedding in a few years with one Ms. S and a young recruiter Mr. W. My gf was the one who mentioned it and both Ms. S and Mr. W seem to be outstanding people.
  • Coyle is a perfect fit for Syracuse and the staff. He fits right in with SS and the bunch.

  • The players are all very well put together and there are no slobs out there. Even the walk-ons are legit. Hill did some pretty awesome things tonight. He would disappear in the trees and come scooting out the other side.
  • Clark is a man. Kid is a legit SEC type player. Kid has NFL written all over him.
  • Amir, Pickard, and Sheppard are going to be pretty nice ends in a couple of years. They already have the size but, unlike Clark, are not used to the speed of the game. This was practice 8, and I would not be surprised to see one if not all get some run this year if need be.
  • Carter might be the best out of the bunch when their careers are done. This kid has overcome a lot and life is just now showing him the beautiful parts of it. I think he takes it all in and runs with it. When you have been through the valley like he has, you learn much more about all of life, including small obstacles like football, and many times can come out much more amazing than those that have not had those experiences. The kid is a sponge talking with upper classmen on the sidelines. His frame is ridiculous and a few years in a legit S@C is going to do wonders.
  • Cross did some good thing and, like his tape in HS, gets great leverage. His pads are very low to the ground.
  • Luke, Samuels, and Simmons got good push with Luke being the best rusher. For the most part they went against the 2's.
  • Thompson is precautionary and I would not worry to much about the boot and crutches. After last year, the staff are not going to take and chances as many who did not play were held out because of minor strains and bangs. We have the depth and luxury to sit players this year.

  • Not to much to say about the lines. The 1st gave Hunt time to throw and provided decent protection and running lanes. This was against the 2's. Trudo looked secure at C and Emerich will probably be his back up.
  • The LB corp is legit and could be best in the last decade. I see a lot of rotation here as there is plenty of depth and all can run and play.
  • We have our starting 3 in Bennet, Ziare, and Hodge. I think the DL will do its job opening holes and these guys are going to murder some QB's. Think Rutgers/WVU.
  • Shy did well today. His first play out he allowed the receiver to catch the ball on a short cross that he (Shy) misjudged and could have had it for a pick.
  • Henderson is a beast already. Just got to get used to the next level.
  • The secondary is going to be better this year than the past and we have a couple of stud safeties. Williams is jacked and will possibly be the best S in a long while.
  • Whigham is a man who is in turmoil. I really think he is haunted by last year. I think last year he was haunted by the freak injury from the year before. He seemingly put it behind him and played really well and you could see the despair in his face after the injury. I am not to sure how bad the injury is but he was walking around on it through out the after game promotions. Many of his brothers in the secondary were came and joked with him. The best line was from Mr. Morgan who said, "He's just trying to get a week off." I think if it was mega serious, he would have been carted off to the locker room . Might seem him out like Thompson.
  • The rb's ran hard tonight and I think we get much more from this position. It was reported that there was a rift between Adam and GM in what they were trying to run. The line is blocking much better and opening some holes. There was way to much side to side last couple of years and seemingly much more focus to go South North. Morris ran much better tonight and Devante is going to be a legit starter. I do see some young bloods pushing them for pt. They are just that good.
  • Conway is a giant as well as Ward. I am hoping that Ward gets it together and can contribute. There was a lot of hype and I hope he meets it.
  • Didn't see much from the rest of the freshman line. I expect most if not all to redshirt. We have nice depth here.
  • Erv, Estime, Ish, and Lewis seem to be our go to guys in the passing game. We did nothing with the TE's. Custis and Adly were no where to be seen. Womack seems to be going to WR fulltime. He got off the line better tonight and that was against the 1's. It might take him a season to learn the position but I could see him being Ish 2.0. Ish is a legit sized receiver and add some serious size.

  • Ish, Erv, Estime caught punts. Ish is the best out of the bunch as far as fielding the punt. The kid has Charmin hands.
  • Hunt looked more poised in the pocket. He threw some nice intermediate throws. Wilson is the 2nd and I am not sure what he can do. He does throw a nice ball. Dungey is third right now. He has a lot of growth to make but could be good to above good. I think we might see Long redshirt this year. Didn't see much of anything deep.
  • Dixon could be all ACC as a punter and the freshman was not shabby either. Both had low line drives their first punt but both boomed them after that.
  • Murphy is going to be solid. Norton kicked the ball better than last year. They both did miss longer kicks. Norton still has the longer leg but lost his mojo with all his off the field antics I think.

All in all, I think this was the best event I have been to. What a gorgeous night and beautiful summer in CNY. We do have a tight and family oriented program starting from the boss running all the way down to the walk-ons and managers. As in the spring game, everything was very vanilla. I don't think we got even a snippet of what the O is going to look like this year. We have good depth and a lot of talent on the sidelines. 1's went against 2's.

We cannot take much away from what we saw tonight other than: Hunt looks more poised in the pocket, team is in great shape physically, LB's are going to be the heart of the D, we are thin but very good at S, secondary is going to do much better than last year. I do think we are going to see much more from the TE position. I can also see our big receivers Custis and Adly being much more involved in the expanded playbook.

The picture with the team and kids was phenomenal and will be a great recruiting tool once it is hung up in the football wing and parents of recruits see it. Recruiting is only going to pick up with the facilities and staff's personalities. Very wonderful men with great hearts. If we can put the W's together we will start to really take off. The biggest question to be answered is, can they put it all together. I see why a family like the Washington's and Culpepper's committed here. I see why Coyle supports SS and staff. We have the best talent we have had sense the 90's. Can SS put it together or will we have a new staff in a few years. Between the last few classes and what we have coming in, I think he does. I would buy this penny stock as I am pessimistically bullish about its future.

My 4 year old daughter thought that the chocolate frosted brownie was refreshing. My wife after cleaning it from her face and clothing...not so much.

Thanks. One does wonder what effect that injury had on Whigham. Prior to the injury he showed serious potential. Hoping he has a good year.

Forgot to add that these guys are mentally football players. There is nothing soft about them and they came to play tonight. They were going after it and had a few exchanges. I love the contact and the chipiness. Football is a violent sport and they brought it. There are no slouches here. This team is going to come out with something to prove this year and might very well surprise a few teams. DM's teams were quoted by opposing teams as being the toughest and hardest hitting teams they played. This team is going to be that x2.

Thanks for the report! Pessimistically bullish is still bullish which is nice see from some people coming out of FAN FEST.

I was there the whole scrimmage and I know that Dungey is a freshman but based on what I saw, I think he should be the #2 on the roster. He did some freshman things but has all the tools and looks like he is the future along with AJ and Culpepper. I would have to consider him the front runner for the job next year.
glad to hear that, i am still dubious re hunts passing ability. but if he can get the team to move the ball, and he makes good decisions i will be in

They put on a great event. Shocking what moving this from a weeknight to a weekend can do.

Coyle is an easy person to talk to. Says that season ticket holders are the backbone of the program.

You're right about the Ensley Center. It's HUGE. Money well spent.

I got to meet Dan Bartlett today as well as new poster CuseGoose, and the usual Fine Mess crowd was in attendance.

20 days...
i believe getting the non-season ticket holders in the seats is equally as important to the program. the majority of seats are filled by local folks, who have pride in su, we need more of them. if we win, we will get more of them. if we win consistently we may get more sth, and maybe a few old sth back.

Echoing much of this thread an absolute first rate event. VERY well run from the STH check in to the BBQ to the myriad of events.

Mrs. C, CajunCuse and I met Mark Coyle and his wife he they seemed genuinely excited to be a part of the program and appreciative of the support. Invited him to sneak away some game day to join us in the Fine Mess for some jambalaya.

Always enjoy the chance to see our group represented so well. Ran into Crusty and Mrs. Crusty upon arrival. Big shout out to them for making the trip north. Had a chance to congratulate new groom to be Tomcat with an improvised hand shake through a chain link fence. Also touched base with TexanMark, CuseRegular, Cuse only and a couple of others. Introduced myself to Bam, decked out in bright orange sneakers though they may be worn out after chasing the little guy around all night.

Not much to add from a football perspective. Watching the team walk in prior to warm ups they certainly passed the looks test. Lots of size and very little of it carried around the waist line. Quite a contrast to that now iconic photo in the hideous Orange unis of the big bellied O line.

Personally I thought Hunt was very uneven. Fine in 7-on-7 drills put inconsistent when the full scrimmage began. Throws to the middle of the field were all good, but missed some open throws to the edge and threw behind receivers regularly on swing passes. Closed strong though in the red zone drills.

Didn't see Strickland at all and I must have missed most of Morris good work because I don't recall anything standing out. Fredericks and Perkins both impressed and Hill showed some explosive quickness. Wonder if he might be a KO return option at some point.

Was very happy with the first team D line despite the fact that half of the projected starters sat out the scrimmage. Clark may be running with the ones due to injury but it's going to be hard to keep him off the field. What a beast! Samuels may have just been Wally Pipped.

On the injury front was not happy to see Thompson on crutches. Did not look good. Raymon on the other looked ready to go, champing at the bit. Guessing we'll get the word on Whigham today. Looked bad at first but he was putting weight on it and moving without assistance later.

My first time to a Fan Fest, the move to Saturday deserves big props and I'm ready to go!

Just a couple of suggestions for next year. Maybe DRB can take these forward.

More interaction with the coaching staff. Have Shaf address the crowd and maybe mike up some coaches during the scrimmage. Add some more prizes and giveaways throughout the program. Live drawings for tickets, T shirts and the like. Not sure how scripted the play calling is but let a fan win the chance to sit in the box with Lester and choose plays for a series. Might even get a sponsor and raffle off a trip to an away game with proceeds to the Orange Club or Boeheim Foundation.

All in all a great day and well worth the 3 hour round trip.

That's a good thing because honestly when I left it was 0-0. I thought I stayed close to the end, and for the life of me I don't know where Hunt's 3 TD's came from? All I saw was more of the same...missed open receivers.

A few observations:

The lobby at Manley was very nice. I can see why all the recruits come away impressed with our facilities. The lobby with all the different interactive stuff makes a very nice first impression.

- Hopefully they dress up the IPF a little bit. Huge facility, and i'm sure they will get around to it.
- Both defenses looked great (1st and 2nd team). The guys on the DL are massive. This is probably the first class that we brought in where you can look at them and say these are grown men, who look like they play for a P5 program. That goes for RS Fr as well. Just absolutely massive, and can move. Both lines dominated both 1st and 2nd team OL. Daivon Ellison stood out to me on a few occasions, especially when he got right up and jammed Custis so hard he didn't get a foot of the LoS. Again, I see where it said Hunt had 3 TD's, I didn't see them?
- Which brings to the offense. I get that it was a exhibition and we weren't showing anything, well that's a good thing because there was absolutely nothing to see offensively. Ishmael is an absolute 1st team All ACC stud WR, and Jordan Frederick looked good, but the rest was a whole bunch of ehhh. The OL had trouble moving our 2nd string DL full of Fr. Hunt made some throws, but also missed a few easy throws he needs to make. Dungey looked smooth when he got out there. He is probably the best QB on the roster right now. Didn't have nearly as many reps, but he just looked a lot more comfortable passing then some of the older guys.
Wow. I've been to all of these pre-season scrimmages in the past and can honestly say that this is thee most productive I've ever seen the offense. Lot of big runs despite a very vanilla design with no deception. Only an unconditional Hunt detractor could look at that and summarize his play the way you did here. He fitted several balls in to pretty good coverage and made a great play off of a bad snap. I thought he played pretty darn good. Ying and yang I guess

I have some pretty good memories of Fan Fest and the festivities that would go on in Manley during the P era. That being said, Fan Fest is what it is. This was BY FAR the best one since those days. Actually felt like an event. Good job to all involved.

Did Estime play? Haven't heard him mentioned at all.
Yes, nothing really doing except for a couple of short passes. Again, coaches have been qouted as holding everything back. Kid ran well and looks ready for this season. I expect for him to get his share. Erv will take some of what he got in the past.

I am surprised no one has commented (unless I missed it, of course) on Coyle's comment in this Axe article:

"I like that guy," Mark [Coyle] remarked as we discussed the head coach. "I really hope he wins so he can stick around here for awhile."

Of course, I am assuming 'Mark' refers to Mark Coyle. I had to assume because nowhere in the article does his full name appear until after this quote. Then, this:

Syracuse's new AD Mark Coyle holds Shafer's fate in his hands. He briefly addressed the crowd in the stands and thanked them for welcoming he and his family into the Orange community after hobnobbing under a big white tent with the smell of hamburgers grilling in the air and the opinions of SU's most influential fans, the season-ticket holders, fresh in his ear.

But Coyle's decision is still weeks away.

What decision??? The decision on whether or not to retain/extend HCSS? We don't know, because he never tells us. Ah well, life in the internet age. This article screams, "THIS is why we need editors!!!!"

Anyway, editing rant is over. My real point was, blunt talk from the new AD. He had to know he was on the record, right? You can take that quote two ways - either "I really like him" and leave it at that, or a shot across the bow - "you'd better win, and soon."

I think axe meant to say "mike" referring to the fan from Sidney earlier in the article. Axe had Coyle on his mind because the next paragraph was going to be about Coyle

Ah, must have missed that. Now it makes sense. My previous post now screams, "THIS is why you need to read the article twice!!!!" ;)

But again, what decision is "still weeks away"?
