Official Fan Fest Thread?

Ah, must have missed that. Now it makes sense. My previous post now screams, "THIS is why you need to read the article twice!!!!" ;) But again, what decision is "still weeks away"?

The decision whether to keep Shafer. But the paragraph before contains no quotes from Coyle. It's just Axe saying Shafers fate is in Coyles hands. Axes comment that that decision is weeks away is a throw away. He could have also said a few months away.

I am surprised no one has commented (unless I missed it, of course) on Coyle's comment in this Axe article:

"I like that guy," Mark [Coyle] remarked as we discussed the head coach. "I really hope he wins so he can stick around here for awhile."

Of course, I am assuming 'Mark' refers to Mark Coyle. I had to assume because nowhere in the article does his full name appear until after this quote. Then, this:

Syracuse's new AD Mark Coyle holds Shafer's fate in his hands. He briefly addressed the crowd in the stands and thanked them for welcoming he and his family into the Orange community after hobnobbing under a big white tent with the smell of hamburgers grilling in the air and the opinions of SU's most influential fans, the season-ticket holders, fresh in his ear.

But Coyle's decision is still weeks away.

What decision??? The decision on whether or not to retain/extend HCSS? We don't know, because he never tells us. Ah well, life in the internet age. This article screams, "THIS is why we need editors!!!!"

Anyway, editing rant is over. My real point was, blunt talk from the new AD. He had to know he was on the record, right? You can take that quote two ways - either "I really like him" and leave it at that, or a shot across the bow - "you'd better win, and soon."
I also found myself having one of those 'Wait, what did I miss?" moments, and had to go back and re-read this section looking for an initial mention of Coyle.

This editing foible aside, I also found Coyle's comments to be interesting "administrator-speak". On one hand it is a personal endorsement of Shafer from his new boss. But on the other hand, it puts HCSS on notice what Coyle's expectations are if he wants to retain his job. As coaches are fond of saying, competition is a good thing.

Great day all around. I showed up early looking for tailgaters and found KellySyracuse and crew. They're a fine group. Found a lot of Syracusefan.com posters throughout the day. It was great to see Texanmark, cuseregular, reedny & clan, tomcat, consigliere, dccuse, dcuse, lincolncuse, orangextreme, Mr. & Mrs. Crusty (who got their pictures in the ps by the way), dan bartlett, and many others. Sat with tomcat through the rain. It was the best way to get great seats for the scrimmage. I couldn't get a smile off my face all day except for when Whigham went down. SU did a great job with the day and kudos to them. The Ensley center is friggin huge and bound to help on many levels. It was my first fanfest and a special day for me. Many other people have talked in detail about the players and all I can say is that I'm very optimistic and excited for the season ahead. There were a bunch of playmakers on the field on both offense & defense, all eager to display their talents. I also got to chat with some coaches including Bobby Acosta & Fred Reed. Thanks to SU for starting the season right.

Fun day hanging out with Shenexon, Joe the dome program guy and the regular tailgate crew. Got to meet Tomcat and was interviewed by Time Warner News. Can't wait for the first game

I don't know why people here keep commenting and bringing up the stories the negative media here in Syracuse writes. They are getting clicks and hits to show the advertisers that they do matter in this market.

They must have figured out positive stories don't bring in the dough, but when we start winning big again they will be the biggest band wagon fans going. Ignore these clowns......

It's kinda fun right now - Axe doesn't know what to do. Yesterday was too positive.

Sorry to anyone who came early looking for the canopy/Ft Drum Flag. My tailgate stuff was not were I thought it was and I didn't figure out where it was until it was too late. All in all a great day. Well done by SU. The team looks good...realistically I'm thinking 6 or 7 wins is best case.

The IPF is a gamechanger...what other school out there has 2 3/4 indoor football/playing fields?

Thanks everyone for all the posts. You all have painted a great picture. Wish I could have been there with my 7 year old. Sounds like it was an exceptional day on the Hill. Can't wait for kickoff - and I am really pulling for Shafer to turn the worm! LGO!

I was there the whole scrimmage and I know that Dungey is a freshman but based on what I saw, I think he should be the #2 on the roster. He did some freshman things but has all the tools and looks like he is the future along with AJ and Culpepper. I would have to consider him the front runner for the job next year.
Wilson will be the starter next year IMO. He is the only guy that can throw down field with accuracy - which he did yesterday again.
He has another year to learn. Dungey looks like a WR to me.

Wilson is a pick machine under pressure.

Dungey looks like a WR? We just moved another QB recruit to WR.

Call me crazy, but I don't think the staff will move both.

I saw Crusty and Mrs. Crusty there, great people was great to see them again after Metlife last year. I met Dan Bartlett there as well, great guy. I met Consiglierie too.
Seeing everybody made the trip worthwhile - get a bit homesick now and again so gotta get summertime CNY fix!

AJ was as well - they were just pups last year. Wilson keeps hanging on the 2nd spot so they must see something.

Womack was impressive as a WR yesterday. He's a great athlete and will help us wherever he plays. He wants to be on the field somewhere I think and sees the long line at QB.

Edit: I could also see him as db depth if we have a need there this year. He's versatile.

It may seem like a long line, bit it is wide open after this year with no one proven.

Should be fun next year with Dungey, Womack, Culpepper, Wilson, Mahoney, & who knows who else with a chance become the starting QB. Personally, I like Dungey as the starter with Womack as a WR. We really could use both those guys on the field. Mahoney seems small and Wilson has the most experience but perhaps not the upside potential of some of the newer guys. Culpepper seems to have great potential but will be playing catchup. All I can say is that options are great things and we have several players that could be at least decent QB's.

Hopefully the only time we see Wilson in the next 2 years is mop up duty, he has no presence in the pocket, stays locked onto one receiver, and can't move. Allen could throw the ball well, but didn't have the ability to run a team, and neither does Wilson.
