Ohio Postgame Discussion...

This is my fear too - the most suspect part of our offense right now is down field passing. Tommy had a few opportunities where he overthrew Taj but there wasn't much going on there.

he only had 17 attempts, completed 11 (65%) and 7 of those 11 went for first downs

yeah, he can’t hit on the deep ball.

yeesh

I wanted to see a little more improvement from Tommy than we got, when we get in ACC play he’s gonna have to make some big boy throws. and also wish we got a little more pressure bringing just our front 4, Ohio’s O line did a good job in pass pro so have to give them their credit aswell. other than that i don’t think we could’ve asked for more, Ohio is gonna compete for a MAC championship this year, they’re no joke. so to go in their stadium and completely shut them down is a really great way to start the season. 1-0 now let’s go beat down those rats from jersey!

Hey, he connected on a couple excellent slants! I thought it was back to competent. Good to get his sea legs back under him.

So I realize it's a MAC team and MAC records don't correlate with P5 but new coach aside, that Ohio team has played in a bowl game 8 out of the last 9 seasons ( didn't count their 3 game season last year). They have plenty of P5 scalps over the years too.

We went in and overpowered them on the line of scrimmage and shut them down in the RedZone. We did so leaving a lot of meat on the bone too.

It's a quality win for sure. Next week we find out where we truly stand.

It’s rarely referenced. Had to chime in.
Great fookin’ game. I’m breathing again. Flying in for Rutty. They put 61 on Temple. Hoping Temple is UCONN bad.

Not U Conn bad but they stink

I can’t remember who told me today, but Bear’s illness isn’t COVID. What it is I do not know.

My definition of a deep ball is clearly different than yours.

15 yard slants are not deep throws. Feel free to point out to me where he connected on one that was actually in the air for 25-30 yards.

Did you actually watch the game or are you just reading a box score?

I'm on your side; but, there was one bomb to Taj, that if he even half-heartedly lays out, would have been a completion.

Yeah my only point was that we have to have a functional, over the top deep passing game or else we will be vulnerable to stronger teams stacking the box. We out muscled Ohio in the run game without it but there will be opponents that we have to keep honest by throwing down field successfully.

And I get some goofy Ra Ra don’t criticize Tommy fanboy response because he threw for 7 first downs. That’s great and I’m happy he was very accurate in the short game, and he ran the ball effectively, but we did not show in this game we have a capable long game.

We will need that against Rutgers and other higher quality opponents.

Solid win. Not sure if we were "hiding" things from future opponents, because honestly to me it looked like every other post Dungey style of game plan but with a decent offensive line. One thing that leaves me weary is the size. We looked smaller than a MAC team. A MAC team that's supposed to be good, but still, teams like BC and Clemson are going to be monsters compared to us. Things I liked were tucker obviously, devito completing passes OUTSIDE the pocket and the quick shot of flair we saw from Shrader and Adams at the end. Oh, and the beginning of the Duce Chestnut show. I hope we destroy Rutgers and Duce gets a pick 6.

Outside of Taj -

Could've been Nykeim's role.
Umari Hatcher?
Q is more steady than flash
Sharod = pedestrian

I’m curious when we’ll get to see Damien Alford. I’m not sure if he made it into the game or not.

Also we have some really athletic TE’s - they did a great job blocking but again another game where I don’t think we threw one ball to them.

Cool. So we are going to put the back up in who has 0 proof of a deep ball?

Yeah because my post said Tommy wasn’t capable of throwing a deep ball and I was pining for Shrader.

Some of you guys are just plain strange.

TE is a huge question for me.
Either we were hiding that part of the play book
Or
I owe that frosh TE that bailed an apology.

we threw 2 deep balls the whole game. The one that was 1-2 inches overthrown that I thought Taj could have laid out some for and the other was to Jackson I think that was perfectly thrown except the DB grabbed his arm with no call.

Well at least you don’t define the 11 completions as deep throws :). That’s a solid starting point lol.

Taj was overthrown in the end zone too, but can’t remember how deep a throw that was.

If you don’t think after this game stronger teams aren’t going to game plan for us by stacking the box and making Tommy throw deep I don’t know what to tell you. And if we only have one deep threat that’s a problem, whether he’s overthrown or not.

Competent is fine vs Ohio. It won’t be enough against better teams… we need a QB that can burn defenses for selling out. I didn’t see anything from tommy to suggest he’s added a new dimension to his repertoire. If all we’re asking our qb to do is handoff 90% of the time then Garret should be in a clear rotation to see what he can do. Unfortunately at SU, we need more than a game manager to raise the ceiling for the program. Tommy raises the floor with his experience but not sure 5-6 wins is the floor… which is what Dino needs to keep his job.

that being said, we’re sorely missing a Custis/Ishmael type at receiver to complement Taj. That was my biggest disappointment tonight to see nothing from this group. Hope it was just a case of vanilla.
