Okay, let's fire

To be fair, a good chunk of that came from people Fran has a relationship with. It also appears football donors have deeper pockets. See Burton and others.
Yup definitely more money coming in from alums on that side. Burton is one but there are others too.

Melo is only doing this because his kid is potentially coming here. Why wasn't he involved before? When his kid leaves Melo leaves. He could have been helping this entire time but didn't.
I don't feel comfortable telling someone else how to spend their money. We have a practice facility that he help pay for. Thats pretty big. And we don't know how much he has spent up to this point.

I’m glad you at least feel this is the case. I’m not sold it is in this new era and with so many moving parts and so much instability across college sports.
How did you feel about football just a year and a half ago?

No one has given an answer as to where we are going to get the money for this?
You have perfectly described why a school like SU can not afford to take a flyer on an unproven coach, whether alum or not. Job is too big for Red, but you are stuck with him for the length of his contract.
This transition from Boeheim was always going to be difficult, now difficult, painful, and boring. The basketball I am watching is unexciting, and not a good product.

As much fun as this year has been and having momentum behind it - I’m enjoying the moment but don’t feel much differently in the bigger picture yet. So for me it hasn’t moved the big picture needle much.
I think the coach alone moves the needle. Let's see what our portal haul looks like. I bet it's really good. And it's been just 1 year.

No he didn't help. A 3M donation to create the Melo Center - he didn't help at all

I thought that he and Joyce each put in a million.

That was a long long time ago and that was for his former head coach. That isn't today and isn't in the NIL era.

We really need a haul from the portal next year. A center, point guard and a dynamic forward. We can’t rely on freshman to carry us. Just those three will cost at least $2 million. That’s not counting the rest of the roster.

Phil, he spent 3M That is all you need to know. It doesn't matter when.

I am pretty sure it wasn't full 3M but regardless he did give more than I will in my life time.

It wont be there from what I understand. Theres very little buy in right now. Thats the reality. Basketballs not attracting the dough that football is. 20 years of built up good will we destroyed in 5 or 6 years.
Here is the truth. JB built a great program. Unfortunately he actually left the program in considerably worse shape than the program he took over for Roy.
Jim hung on way too long and he constructed a roster based solely on his kids. The result is that he destroyed his own program. Red will get next year. If he doesn't do well next year he will be fired. This is what is going to happen.

We paid the buy out for babers didn't we? Why is this any different. If JW cant find the money to save the former flagship program then maybe he isn't a great fit either. Im not a big money donor but I will be sending The chancellor my (likely useless) email and i assume others will as well. If what you're saying is true and the Chancellor is diverting money from sports to a pet project then I think some people with more money and clout have a BOT conversation on their hands, and a relatively concerning one at that. In no world should money be being put into an unproven project if the donors aren't supportive. That being said, if those big money donors aren't willing to have that conversation then perhaps they support the project and thus the sports program is officially relegated to second tier.

This is where my head is at. It must be clear that downturn was coming. Similarly, he likely knew that his son had interest in coming to Syracuse. If Melo wasn't inclined to invest in the program over the past few years to create a strong foundation for Kiyan, it's unlikely that he'll continue contributing financially after Kiyan leaves. Maybe he wasnt doing it so he didnt pressure Kiyan but I dont think so. While I'd be happy to be proven wrong, logic suggests that his support will likely be short-lived and tied to his son's tenure.

I don't see why he would ever want to coach again, to be honest.
Two titles at his alma mater. His players are doing great in the NBA.
Be a broadcaster. Hang around the industry, but really zero pressure.
Jay played at Bucknell, but I agree he'd never come here and we would never pay his rate.

There is no question in my mind that there is something very wrong with the "books" at Syracuse. And that is the first thing that needs to be fixed. I think there is a good chance we will hear about this subject down the line.
You and I have talked about this. This is the biggest problem at hand. Forget the basketball team record, there’s some serious smoke with what’s going on up there
