OT-MNF Damar Hamlin emergency

Yep great great news. The neurologically intact part especially which means with certainty he’ll have no motor deficits/paralysis and that the cranial nerves in the brain are intact and functioning so no deficit there either.

And by extension think it’s safe to assume, although not conclusively yet, but likely that the rest of his higher functioning brain/consciousness will be ok too. That’s big good news and will be hopefully confirmed shortly with further recovery.

If things continue to trend as they are in this positive direction he can look forward to a normal course of life and living. Keep praying people!
Been following this closely, and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge on the subject. When you say normal course of life, do you think Hamlin returns to the field at some point in the future or to early to say.

If the trajectory of recovery continues at such a fast and impressive pace then it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he could be like that hockey player this happened to a while back who returned to hockey after three months, in this case next season.

So he may very well have the choice if they clear him not only for this with a full recovery but also it would require a full comprehensive evaluation of all body systems to be certain there was no underlying condition that contributed to this happening (imo think that’s likely that they’ll find nothing in terms of pre-existing conditions).

All that said I hope someone gets in his ear and says let’s call it a career, and tell him he’s already achieved way more than most in sport (and life for that matter), but let’s face it these elite athletes are so motivated to get where they are that if they do clear him he may feel the need to overcome and get beyond this 100% by getting back on the field for that symbolic victory.

I know myself I’d be running for the hills into retirement and am so glad I didn’t know this type thing was even possible back in the day when I played because I may not have even played at all and stuck to tiddlywinks!

Edit: just heard, he asked, in writing, last night, who won the game! Yep think the odds are even better now he’s gonna be ok!

I know this is probably unlikely but imagine this scenario:

Bills are hosting AFC title game, teams come out for opening coin toss, and over the PA they announce “let’s bring out todays honorary captain” and Hamlin’s family pushes him out in a wheelchair. And the Ralph just loses its mind.

Or he just walks !

Really appreciate your insights, the news today and people like you affirming it’s a positive development is fantastic. I did not have high hopes for any positive outcome; I will never be so happy to be wrong if I’m wrong in this case.

13 seconds from when Hamlin fell to when kellington started yelling to the Cincy trainer incredible response
It’s hard to fully comprehend the enormity of the stress associated with the emt/trainer/first responders first on the scene(s) in trying to make the split second decision as to what’s wrong/injured.

As to if it’s spinal related or cardiac related, etc. with the A B C’s of assessment (airway, breathing, circulation), because if you figure wrong conclude it’s heart and start moving them to position them for care and/or vigorously take off their equipment to do same, if it’s a spinal deal and not cardiac you could make things worse, much worse.

In my 30+ years in doctor world I’ve been the first dr. Type on the scene several times now and although you dial in and focus at the time of need, the stress associated with it all is off the charts, during but especially especially after., right after then later just hoping you were able to help, not hurt and did the right thing.

Hard to adequately find the words to get that point made. So I really hope when the time comes for him to walk back on the field in whatever capacity it is, that right next to him waking out there with him will be the amazing dudes that saved his life.

He was the worst player in the league a few years ago, now he's top 10
I was at the game Tage played against my Columbus Blue Jackets a few weeks ago where he matched an NHL record by scoring four times in the first period and finished with five goals and an assist. The Sabres scored 6 goals in the first 16:40 of the first period. It was ridiculous...

I was hoping to make a similar point but you said it much better than I would. I've never worked in the medical profession, so if I've ever made a mistake at work, it's a common phrase to say "nobody's going to die, we'll just fix what went wrong" For first responders, somebody will die. For them to immediately go into life-saving mode when it's really not something you expect at a football game, is just amazing to me. I can't imagine doing work like that. I know I don't have the mindset for it. I'm just in awe.

To do what they did in front of tens of thousands of people, presumably while Hamlin still had pads on, is nothing short of incredible. Much more impressive than anything that we will ever see on a football field game wise.

Many people don’t know this but first responders can and actually have died in the past while administering CPR. It takes a lot out of you.

I watched on TV, it was nuts. I have never seen anyone so bad get so good

I drove my family by a deadly accident where an idiot driver killed two pedestrians, one a child that we knew from day care, and permanently injured her younger brother. All I could do was get out of the way of all the ambulances and cops flying up

Nightmares for a while. I wish we had driven by a few minutes earlier but I wonder how much use I would've been. Probably not much, I froze. my wife had to snap me out of it to get the out of the way. People like Kellington are different and better.

The fact cognitive and neurological functions are stabilizing is very positive. Demar being able to communicate with a board is awesome. It’s a long road to a full recovery. I just want this young man to be able to live without brain damage and walk. Football is irrelevant. Just great news.

Summer while home between my frosh and soph year at Cuse we were playing poker at my buddy's house which is in a very rural area and about 2 miles off a main road. We all had a few drinks but nothing crazy. One of our crew was an EMT and around 1 am we hear an awful sound from what we thought was the main road. My buddy the EMT immediately jumps up and said it sounded like a wreck.

So we hopped in his truck and not a quarter mile after we got to the main road is a Honda civic with the entire front end mashed in from hitting a telephone pole.

Passenger had been ejected and driver was wandering from adrenaline but massive injuries and being full of alcohol. Both survived but driver lost his right arm elbow down and passenger was paralyzed from waste down. Still get nightmares from that one. Also- they were going 110 when they hit the pole and also were airborne.
