OT: Sat Next to Mike Tirico at dinner tnite

I hired Marv, when he was “Marvelous Marv” Albert and the night time DJ on WOLF in the early 60’s. He used to advertise on the radio he would DJ a record hop. My club at West Genesee decided to hire him for a dance. I was selected to call him. I did (still remember the number) called and hired him for $40. He promoted the heck out of the dance and lots of kids paid 50 cents each to go to the dance which was held at Split Rock School. Marv brought two black bands with him and the evening was a success
One other note: Mike Messere, future Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee played bass guitar for a WG band called the Nitecaps, whom I paid $8.00
Love the story.
$40 was big money back then.

SU campus was full of talent in the 60's.
The band Felix and the Escorts, for example.
"Felix" was Felix Cavaliere...later of the Rascals.
And Lou Reed & Garland Jeffreys were there at the same time.

JB himself said he would be retiring in 2018.

He didn’t.

When it comes to the head coach position at Syracuse and his involvement, I don’t trust him at his word anymore

Except it’s not his call regardless of what he may or may not think.

We are talking about INPUT into the decision - can you understand that ? Obviously the "decision" resides with some combination of the AD/BOT/Chancellor and maybe even donors.

JB is much better equipped to have significant input on his successor than anyone else on the planet. He's has the experience and friendship w/ the GOAT Coach K. He has the experience and comradery with Coach Williams. Duke and UNC both took the incombants input seriously when they made their decisions on the transition coach.

Yea cause that’s exactly what you said to start with and O79 replied too.

Sooo….what did Tirico order for dessert?

Versus the coach who runs down his players in public (not to mention the whole nose thing). I’ll take winning.

Me too. But not at the expense of being associated with a collosal stooge. And especially one who has yet to win an NCAA tournament game.

It won't be difficult to win without lowering ourselves, as you advocate. You lay down with dogs, you get fleas. Not sure why this would be a course of action anyone would be okay with..

No thanks.

This is the first good team Hurley has ever had at UConn. He’s done jack there.

Let’s wait and see if they get bounced by a 15 seed with him getting tossed out, before we anoint him. He’s had 2 good months in 5 years there.

- Pitino makes a ton of sense but my concern is JBs ego won’t let it happen. Pitino would kill it here

~ you are at the mercy of that hiring cycle. Just because JB retires doesn’t mean there is a natural replacement, even on the national stage. Hell, we may be left with a younger, high potential coach but need him to skip a level or 2 (Langel) or a mid-tier P5 guy who hasn’t had a whole lot of success but can recruit and has ties to the area (Boyton). But maybe 2 years later there’s another guy that pops at Buffalo or Umass that would have been perfect but the timing didn’t work out.

JBs ego? He’s not doing the hiring. If Pitino isn’t considered, and I don’t think he will be, it’s because SU doesn’t want him because of his past.

I've watched basically every SU basketball game of the past 30 years and can't remember him ever interacting with an assistant in a meaningful way during a game.
That’s just not true. He certainly doesn’t do it as much now but JB and Hopper interacted meaningfully all the time. It was the secret to their success

Why would you ever consider hiring a 70 year old coach? That would be insane.
Well, UNC did it with Guthridge and went to 2 final 4’s in 3 years.

But that was a long time assistant being promoted to take over a loaded team that he’d already been working with. So, very different in that regard.

But the similarity is you knew it would only be for a few years and also that he was the best guy for the job in the short term. Do you always HAVE to hire a guy hoping he’ll be there long term - even though most coaches aren’t anywhere long term?

A short term hire that you know going in will be short term is unconventional, but not necessarily a bad thing.

Guthridge was 60
