pasqualoni fired. gerg hired.

In some ways I think the sport was more creative then because with more people in the backfield, you can do more things.

Case in point:
You can't throw to any part of the field

If you read any of the posts on The Boneyard, it seems the players believed they were being punished by having PP as their coach.

Well if the coach has lost the respect of the team, then it probably doesn't matter I guess. It happened to Steve Spurrier at the Washington Redskins. He lost the team's respect.

If UConn was rudderless with Pasqualoni, they'll be rudderless without a coach too until they get a new one. I still think that having a coach is better for the players than not having a coach though.

Didn't Charlie Tuna do pretty well in his first couple years?
Yeah, I was going to say, hiring him wasn't bad. Extending him when they did and for how much though...

Sorry about that - you're right. He was mediocre at 1st. I just had my vision blurred by that Robinson win at ND.

His career numbers say otherwise. Uconn job was a bad fit at that time in his career, but to say he wasn't capable of being a head coach is ridiculous on its face.

Period.

He isn't capable of being a head coach. He took over a team coming off a major bowl and made it worse. He is a bad head football coach. His final years at Syracuse were poor. His time at UCONN was a disaster. His early career success came with Coach Mac's players. The McNabb 4 years is what HE can hang his hat on. After that he has been a train-wreck

You guys, I just realized something that blew my mind...this:

...is going to be Will Ferrell in 20 years.

Actually they could. And they could run to any part of it. too.

This series, (there are three parts), is also interesting in how many "modern" plays you see.

WOW. I have been around here for 12-13 years or so and everyone who has been here that long knows how I felt about Coach P but this post simply isn't even remotely accurate. He had a pretty good run at Syracuse and yes I can maybe see the argument that the college game has passed him buy and he has sucked at UCONN but lets not go to an absolute extreme here, the guys had a real nice run at Syracuse and was fired for a season that most would deem a success this year, kind of crazy. It was time for him to go but laying his career out at Syracuse like it was some type of failure is really not accurate

You're talking about a poster that would have complained about Red Auerbach's coaching ability in 1967.

Of course. There was Major Harris, Andre Ware and Tommie Frazier too. But it's undeniable that many, many, college programs were not at all interested in having athletic, A-A kids play QB. That ignorance was a benefit to SU.

Yep, McNabb was picking between SU and Nebraska.

How many schools would he be picking from today? (NY Giants fans need not answer).

holy de ja vu over on the Boneyard complete with infighting (good coach, bad coach, D sucks, Pauls a good man). How ridiculously predictable was this which is what I think we did a few years ago). The fact that I just read over there that the football players we're seen high fiving each other at the news says all that needs to be said. When that happens they play with no emotion...and you lose to Towson and UB.

Hopefully this will be a done and buried topic now.....

So the team quit on their coach, huh? That's what I read into their reaction. If I'm the new coach, I cut every single one of the players that high-fived. Every single one. I don't want players who decide to quit on anything. Pretty sad.

one of the many reasons that i think football coaches are stupid.

how many years did it take them to figure out that black guys might be able to throw the ball

Give them their high 5 - if that is what they are made of they won't have any more until they grow up.

Their 1st year OC, TJ Weist, was announced as the interim coach for the remainder of the year. He was the Cincy WR coach last season.

[/quotSee

See Otto Graham and the Browns of the 50's, The only thing that has changed is the size/speed of the players and the terminology of the sets/plays/formations. Nothing new under the sun,all these plays and formations will recycle around again.

Interesting find...

2 items of note:
- it was interesting to see them play in baseball stadiums with a confined field. (At least) one of the end zone corners was cut diagonally to make it fit.

- "a touchdown pass to Syracuse's Les Dye"... which led me to learn a bit more Syracuse sports (and Les Dye) history.

Towson - 18-33
Maryland - 21-32
Michigan - 21-24
Buffalo - 12-41

He was rightfully fired.

To be fair 3 of those teams are undefeated and Buffalo's 2 loses came from Ohio State and Baylor. All 4 of those teams have more talent on their roster than UConn.

Gotta love how animated the refs were back then, the fact that QBs were on punt coverage, and photographers stood in the endzone. Would love if some of the old time football made it's way back into the game.

I think Kevin Rogers had something to do with it, too. P&D took a step back when he left, in terms of the big play capability of the offense. We got much more conservative with the play calls. I remember them going down to NYC to study the Giants, back in the day, and after that, we became much more predictable.

Kevin Rogers left a season after the Michael Vick Conspiracy occurred. Vick was all but signed by SU before some in Va. conspired with Va. Tech to keep that from happening. Rogers had no one to work with, had DeLeone back looking over his shoulder, and got an offer he couldn't refuse. No surprise that he left. SU screwed the pooch when they had a chance to get him back. VaTech screwed us twice.

Didn't Charlie Tuna do pretty well in his first couple years?

He did well with players he inherited. He had Quinn, that big TE, and some other guy. Once they graduated, it was slim pickins.

If GROB was hired at UCONN, would it be possible for him to have negative wins? I can't imagine he'd do better than Coach P this time around either.

You mean other than 3 bowl games after McNabb left including a 10 win season and a #14 ranking at the end of the year.

ONE losing season in 14 years. Get this genisus Mac was on his way out the door until he turned the offense over to Deleone and P had a huge part in making the defense what it was from '87 on. Why do you think Pasqualoni got the job when Mac left? Pasqualoni was the guy on the sidelines managing the defense the day he came on board.

Mac's players, like those guys had nothing to do with bringing them in a coaching them before Mac left. That's just stupid. Here the list of teams BCS teams ahead of SU in winning percentage while he was here:

Florida State
Miami-Florida
Nebraska
Tennessee
Florida
Michigan
Ohio State
Kansas State
Georgia
Virginia Tech
Texas A&M
Texas
Oklahoma
Auburn
Colorado
Notre Dame
Syracuse

He should be ashamed of what a horrible job he did.

I really shouldn't be surprised by anything you post. A consistent track record of being consistently wrong.

I'm wrong as Pasqualoni is out of work today because he is an utter failure as a head coach.

Keep defending the guy and his record!

You could have stopped right there. We have found common ground. The run at Syracuse was only "pretty good" and yes the college game passed him by and he sucked at Uconn. Look, we agree!!

Conveniently, Forde leaves out blue bloods like Michigan (RRod) and ND (Charlie w.)...

And back to the non-blue bloods how'd he miss Kragthorpe at Louisville. Good thing they hired Strong or else they might not have leap-frogged UConn.

Cheers,
Neil
