Pat Perles

Perles did a great job with the OL this past year but what did he do regarding recruiting?

Good luck to him wherever he lands...

Where is he headed to? Anyone know?

Already with Toronto Argos.

"I understand I signed a contract to that university," offensive tackle recruit Denzel Ward wrote in a text message to the Post-Standard/syracuse.com. "Coach Perles is a legendary coach, but I believe Coach Shafer will make an excellent choice for my development and our program. I'm an Orangeman, no regrets."

"Syracuse also lost graduate assistant offensive line coach Jason Onyebuagu, who was recently hired as the offensive line coach at North Carolina Central."

I wonder how long Shafer has known about this (as well as Shafer) and if he has been looking for a while. I think OL Coach is the most important hire for a team after the coordinators-Hope he gets someone good.

I would think that assistants are always on the lookout for better opportunities unless there are extenuating family circumstances or they are linked at the hip with the head coach (ala Deleone). Despite my personal disappointment at the loss of Perles, I have a good feeling about the word-of-mouth pipeline running through to Shafer and McDonald. They know exactly what kind of coach they want at every position.

I would think most coaches have an "in mind for the future" coaching wish list at every position for these very circumstances. I know I would. Hopefully the timing here won't be a hindrance. Openings present the opportunity for potential upgrades, too. Go get us a good one HCSS!

Where has He went to?

Toronto

If his family stayed in Kansas and he's now moved on to Toronto I wonder if this was a 1 year gig from the start?

I'd take a good OL coach -- great recruiter or not -- any day. And what do we actually know about his ability to recruit? He was here for a matter of months, no?

Just throwing it out there. How about Mackey for a Grad assistant role?
I'd hope he'd catch on to a pro team this year (if that is his dream). But if he doesn't this season, get the legacy back into the coaches room (you could not have a recruiter who bleeds orange more than Mackey). And he can workout to stay in shape for another shot at it next year.

I know it would likely be too long before he'd be able to make a commitment for this staff, but it would be great if it happened down the line.

I think I read somewhere that his wife is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg... so maybe you are right and they were simply waiting for an opportunity to move back to Canada.

Love the idea of Mackey as a GA.

He previously spent 5 seasons in the CFL.
