IMO Buddy and Joe played 35+ because the guys behind them weren't very good, they have all since transferred out.

Kadary will play a lot, he might get the Dion treatment and come off the bench but finish the game.

There is no one on the roster that can do what he does.

But he won’t play much. Who is he taking time from? I’d love to see him get 10-15 mpg, but I don’t see it unless he plays the 3, Quincy the 4 and Dolezaj the 5.

So what do you see in the future based on current trajectory. Do you see things magically getting better as JB approaches 80?
I would also have to be naive to not think this is the new normal if we have 6 consecutive years of the same thing and an honest assessment of next year would seem to indicate a 7th year is on deck.

I think that my track record shows that I'm generally an optimist, and not a knee jerk reactionary.

But I don't see how things change until we have a massive influx of top-flight talent [Dior and others he drags in?], or until JB decides to finally retire and we bring in a fresh approach with a new coaching staff.

It's to early for me to have an opinion either way yet for next year, but I don't want to hear anymore excuses. Find a way to win 22-25 games and if you don't just admit it's on you ...I think we need 2 more players and I'm hopeful it's a shooting forward, but it doesn't sound like JB thinks that.

Wildhack is even on the record of thinking we aren't far off. We will see...

25 wins is more than I think we can expect. That's 25 and 6 Sweep the OOC and go 14-6 in a tougher scheduled ACC? I think the 22 is much more a realistic goal. And one I would be willing to sign up for right now.

Your are probably right, but I just watched Virginia go 23-7(15-5) with one good player and 4 guys who had about as much talent as we had in my fraternity basketball league.

I agree, missing on high end talent is an issue with the program. Dior, hopefully, represents the beginning of a trend. You have to have a couple of Dior type talents to compete with the top 3 or 4 teams in the ACC year in and year out.

I think our returning guys will all be better next year. But, the subtraction of Hughes, who was the only high end talent IMO, is going to be significant.

If we allow 52ppg next year we will win 23 games like Virginia did...just like 90% of the P5 teams would

Our fan base doesn't like defense, they want to be entertained even if it cost us games...
Since 2013-2014
Virginia has gone
2013-2014 30-7
2014-2015 30-4
2015-2016 29-8
2016-2017 23-11
2017-2018 31-3
2018-2019 35-3
2019-2020 23-7

If we were doing that I think people would deal with ugly basketball.

We were mediocre and playing ugly basketball in the 2 years before this year.

People don’t like ISO offense and mediocre records.

I am not a fan of Virginia’s style but they win and that is the most important thing.

Having a good team and entertaining brand of basketball together would be ideal.

For sure and there’s a place for actual dialogue about our team and the state of the program, positive or negative.

It’s the constant negativity just to be negative that’s already past getting old. It’s not even April, there’s still plenty of time for the roster to shake out and noone has any idea how we’re going to be next year yet.

It’s way more fun to be a positive sports fan than a negative one, especially when everything else in the world sucks like it does right now.
embrace it. it will be your best friend

If I ignore somebody does that mean I don’t see their posts? I’ve been meaning to ask
yup. the biggest downside to it is if someone you ignore starts a thread, you won't see it so you'll end up missing a lot of good responses. "good" being relative; it's not like we're a bunch of dostoevskys here

fwiw, i don't automatically ignore those i disagree with, only those who have become tedious

not at the time it was offered it wasn't. it only became "uncommittable" because jgiii declined to accept it so k moved on

That's exactly what I said.

It's not like recruiting was going great in Hop's final years here. The explosion of 1 and dones has hurt us. Guys that would go to Syracuse and UConn and schools like that, now go to Duke and Kentucky because the 5 star that those schools get one year, leave right away rather than stay for at least 2.
In my opinion (only) It actually seemed like Mike Hopkin’s heart was not in recruiting his last year. Almost like he felt it was time to move on.

not really; you tried to obscure the essentials:
k wanted him
duke offered
didn't get him
jb did

Duke offered and wanted him along with multiple other schools. JG decided to wait and take his time making a decision and in the course of that Duke filled the spot and the offer was no longer on the table. Doesn't diminish JB getting Girard one bit but when he committed here Duke was no longer an option for him.

NARRATIVE GUY: We can’t recruit good players.
CALM DUDE: Elijah Hughes.
NARRATIVE GUY: Doesn’t count. He always wanted to play here.

NARRATIVE GUY: We never beat Duke for recruits.
CALM DUDE: Joe Girard.
NARRATIVE GUY: Doesn’t count. K didn’t really want him.

NARRATIVE GUY: We can’t get recruits from the west coast.
CALM GUY: Dior Johnson.
NARRATIVE GUY: Doesn’t count. He’s not really from the west coast.
CALM GUY: Yeah, but he’s a top ten recruit.
NARRATIVE GUY: Doesn’t count until he’s on campus.

Coleman wasn't the #1 or #2 recruit when we got him back on thanksgiving of '86. He was way down the list. He came on like a demon as the season went on. But that is the truth. We had two not one, back up guards. We had a center that hadn't done a thing and a swing forward that really couldn't score. Going in to the season, things were not so bright.
Stevie Thompson and DC were both MacDonald’s All American, top 20 players in 1986.

Yes. Steve was rated 8th. the bio...he can't play the pt. because he doesn't handle the ball well enough. he can't play the 2 because he can't shoot well enough. He can't play the 3 because he isn't tall enough and doesn't shoot well enough. His position...winner. And Steve wasn't anywhere near the reason we went to the title game the following year. It was guys on the team that emerged. No one saw Douglas being all league. Or Rony emerging as JB said to the player he always thought he was. Plus, sr's Monroe and Triche were solid. No one saw anything from them that thought they would lead us to great heights. Monroe and Triche weren't as accomplished as Buddy, Joe, Marek. Not even QG really. Basketball is a funny game. Experience and player improvement can change a lot in a team. And as I said, everyone is free to disagree with me. I don't think the sky is falling.

We're certainly top 10 in resources and haven't been ranked higher than 14th in a single poll in 6 years. That's beyond depressing.
I mean, even the biggest fans have to admit this is a problem and an unprecedented run in JB’s 44 year tenure. As for next season, I have no idea how good we’ll be.

Hmmm. Rony oozed potential Fromm day 1. Sherm was absolutely a surprise and an underrated kid, but the coaches knew what he could be by his freshman year playing against Pearl in practice.

rony oozing potential, he really didn't do much until late in his jr year. I'm sure the coaches liked Sherm, my point is that if we had a board back then, no one on this board would have known that. As I said, I don't care if people agree or disagree with me, I think we have players that will improve and surprise next year. Now, this virus might hold their summer improvement back, but even still, I am optimistic.
