Paul Finebaum - good and bad

I would imagine (hope) that Wildhack will hit the NIKE deal out of the park. Who would know what the Syracuse brand is worth more than Wildhack would?
I'm pretty psyched the football and basketball teams are both "up" and trending further up while we are renegotiating. Should put us in a strong position.

Art Briles was a POS human being as Baylor coach but he didn’t bail on what he created.
Why do people say Dino is part of the Baylor tree and ignore that Briles stayed.
Of course Dino left directional Illinois and Bowling Green. If he thinks he can win at Syracuse why would he leave for a peer school. South Carolina was the team Finebaum said could have had Babers. He isn’t going to leave unless the school is a clear upgrade.
None of those mid to lower SEC/Big Ten jobs are going to get Dino.
It has to be a top 15 job. Think Clemson/Florida State/Alabama/LSU/Florida/Georgia/UCLA/USC/Oregon/Oklahoma/Texas/Texas A&M/Nebraska/Michigan/Ohio State level job.
Not Maryland/Louisville/Kansas/Kansas State/Texas Tech level.

Syracuse IS a top 15 job. :) At least Dino has made it that himself.

I keep going back to his "Why Syracuse? Why not Syracuse" statement. For me that's pretty telling about his intentions looking long-term.

And you're right, most of this nonsense about Louisville, Maryland, insert next name of dumpster fire P5 program, has more to do with the lack of respect that the writers have for Syracuse as a location and the football program in general, then it has to do with what Babers would logically do or has indicated.

Great time to be negotiating with two major top 15 programs and a host of other SU sports being ranked such as, men’s soccer, cross country, women’s basketball, lacrosse, etc

Agreed. A couple years in a row posting winning seasons / playing in bowls / beating quality teams / being ranked in the national polls will go a long way toward changing many of the pre-existing perceptions of our program.

Amen. I have most of them on ignore, including Finebaum, Forde and Adelson.

Remember, how tight lipped Dino and SU were when they offered him the job. I doubt Dino is putting his name out there. He won’t compromise this team. Also remember, Marrone wasn’t happy with the administrative support at SU. Let’s hope Wildhack provides Dino all the support he needs moving forward.

So if Brohm turns down Louisville I heard then they will turn to Charlie Strong at USF and bring him back.

That wouldn’t bother me. I still think though Brohm will take the job.

Strong is intriguing to me as a HC candidate because his OC is Sterlin Gilbert and has been since he brought him on at Texas.. Strong has gone all-in on the Briles offense.

I have a couple points. They may be naive but they give me hope.

1. he will be 58 before next season starts

2. syracuse has incredible talent next year. First year in 20+ years that we look at "next year" as the year. The usual is we see a bad team that has a few decent freshmen and we say in 2-3 years. But they were only playing because it was a bad team - Think Max Suter.

3. The dome - his offense

4. He specifically said he was offered more money 3 years ago. He chose Syracuse. I just dont feel the need to say that, if you jump ship at the 1st opportune time. Again, maybe im naive.

5. and most importantly. His coaching mentor Art Briles. Went to Baylor. Stayed at baylor (until he was fired) and was never going to leave Baylor. This is a gimmicky offense - not many blue bloods run this offense and I dont think they want/need to start. I feel this offense gives a team and a community an identity that isnt needed at USC, UGA, Clemson, Alabama, etc. It also requires 2-3 years of talent meant for the offense - not just talent (see example 1 loud and proud FSU who may have made a huge mistake going the gimmicky offense)

Just my 2 cents. I'm not predicting anything with Dino's future. I hope he stays. I hope he has a statue next to Ernie in 10 years (I have said that since a few days before we hired him. He was/is/always will be the man for THIS job. I have always though he being the man for the job was a 2 way street cuse defining Dino's legacy, Dino turning Cuse around. I just hope he feels that way too. My opinion has never wavered. He gives us an identity - he is bringing the fans back - he is building this program - he will win games we have no business winning - he will lose games we shouldnt - but there is no question in my mind he gets us a few incredible seasons and it looks like this could be 1 of those seasons)

6. Schedule. BC and Pitt are home. Liberty and UMd are in September.

Outdoor away games. FSU, Duke, Lville, NCst. The schedule sets up for zero cold weather games next year. That favors this offense.

I have to stay off twitter. Get's so frustrating seeing all these places (Maryland, Louisville, USC, and even Colorado) thinking they can get him if they want. It's strange that most USC fans have him as top 2 option. The Louisville 2 4 7 reporter did post another article today stating the word is Babers reached out. Absolutely no chance he reached out in the middle of the season he is having, while trying to game plan for ND. Twitter is a really frustrating place.

Can a coach "reach out" while under contract?

I’m not high, nor am I well connected, but plenty of people who report on college for a living mention Dino for lots of openings, and now it’s not hard to find stories of people saying he maybe even reaching out to other Universities.
Babers did good at two MAC schools with MAC schedules. He has a losing record at Syracuse. I don't think any of the football factories would even try to snag him just yet. If he got the job at Florida State this winter and guided them to 6 wins, guess what? He would be out of a job for not producing and he is smart enough to know that.

Finebaum was saying Dino would be gone after last year when we beat Clemson.

Like the poster above me stated, unless you’re Clemson, OSU or any SEC school, Finebaum will view you as a stepping stone.

However, the fact people like Finebaum think Dino can have a perennial CFP challenger at Syracuse is pretty telling. (In a good way)

Exactly! If the media is starting to say, "Hey, Syracuse could be a player in the ACC with Dino and the Dome", then why WOULD he leave? It's like having an easier path to the NBA Finals if you play in the Eastern Conference. Give us another couple years, and we could re-establish ourselves as one of the elite teams in the Northeast, and serious contenders in the ACC.

Dino was a little choked up in the presser, that the biggest crowd came out for the Seniors. It's pretty clear he's motivated by more than $$. He's positioned himself to be a perennial Giant slayer. They are the stories everyone loves about sports. There's more to life than money.

What we have that nobody else has is a legendary legacy. First African American Heisman winner. Greatest of all time in Jim Brown. We are the school of Floyd Little, John Mackey (who led the NFL players union), Donovan McNabb, Dwight Freeney, Darryl Johnston, Tim Green, Marvin Harrison, Art Monk, Larry Csonka, Chandler Jones, Joe Morris, etc.

Dino is of the right age that he knows our history. He knows that this program, once rebuilt, will make him a legend. He could retire at this school, and make a great legacy for himself, just like these seniors have done.

His agent can. It is done quite frequently.

yeah and his agent isnt game planning or worrying about ND.

that really doesnt bother me though. I suspect that is just pushing for a raise with Wildhack. Just my naive, hopeful 2 cents.

Who really knows just comes down to what Dino wants to do. Plain and simple. Won't be much longer and with the early signing period the timing is critical

Dude can recruit and coach. seems to have learned from previous failures as well. Some P5 will take a shot with him again

I get it, but still wish this speculation would just go away. It feels slimy, like celebrity gossip. If Dino was all about the money, he wouldn't have taken the job. People need to focus on the important games left in the season. JMO.

I’m Nother ancillary benefit of the early signing period, It could be someone of a deterrent for coaching changes. You either already have the majority of your class taken or are willing to except somebody else’s. I guess it could work both ways.

I also feel with his up tempo system, why would he risk it by leaving the Dome, which is PERFECT for his system for 6 games per year. Go to OSU, Michigan, ND, any outdoor school with cold weather/climate, his system is effected.

Interesting point that I haven't seen raised before.

The "old" model was the new coach comes in, cuts bait [or retains] a portion of the class, and then scrambles to fill the rest. Having a large portion of the class already signed could serve as a deterrent, given the timing of some coaching firings / hires.

That’s because Finebaum is an SEC finger puppet and believes that all coaches would leave all but the top 5 or 6 schools for money. Not that there isn’t some historical precedents but guys like him do not dial into the happenings of the ACC with any seriousness. If you couldn’t tell, I can’t stand that guy.
Finebaum grew up in Memphis and is a Tennessee grad. He is hardcore SEC, the kind with contempt for all football in the southeast that is not in the SEC. Finebaum is not nearly as stupid as the low rent SEC fans who truly believed that the ACC is dead as soon as the SEC decides to add UNC, UVA, FSU, and Clemson, but he knows his bread is buttered by playing to those idiots.
