people act like Frost was a home run

From what I'm reading, people aren't so much upset that we lost out on Frost. It's that we lost out on Frost and rumors/signs point to us moving onto a defensive coordinator. As if all our eggs were only in one offensive bucket.

Put me on the list of wanting an offensive minded coach with a good plan (and the school gives him $) for a solid DC hire, than a defensive minded coach with a good plan (and the school gives him $) for a solid OC.

Both methods have won at various schools, so there's no right answer. But SU tries the DC route much more than the OC route. The only time we tried the OC route recently, it was a clear turnaround. Plus that whole Dome thing.

What I don't get is that if we're going the DC route, there are two guys out there who fit that model and have been successful HCs in the northeast. Golden and Rhule. Maybe we interviewed them, maybe they're not interested. I have no idea. But I'd like to think we tried, because it's a lot riskier to think otherwise.
did it work because we went the OC route or because we got a good DC too?

rhule said this week no talk until the game sat is over.

But you hire a coach on a 2 year deal and what does that tell recruits? Either you have no faith in the guy beyond 2 years or will be gone in two years for another job and we conceded to that. That makes zero sense.

Did he sign a two-year deal at UCF? I don't see that anywhere.

tell Belichick that, all about the D wont even draft offense. Parcells went for it on 4th alot too. SS was a QB who coached D and still was not aggressive. thats his downfall.
Belichick and Parcells???

really???

Yes. But your whole premise is careful what we wish for because the OC could hire GRob, but the DC could hire some superstar OC.

I personally think you have better odds with an OC choosing a good DC then you do with a DC hiring a good OC. There's no formula, just how I feel.

I don't know. I know the "rumor" of Frost going anywhere was a 3 year deal with an opt out after two if he wanted to leave for another school and requested a very small buyout clause. I don't know if that is what he got at UCF or not. But demanding a small buyout is a huge red flag no?

This -- and I'd add Edsall and Schiano as options too. I know, I know, they're terrible people and even worse coaches and they suck and they should be tarred and feathered and even writing their names is absurd and Edsall had his chance so we should never talk to him again and they're mean and they kick babies.

BUT ... at this point getting this program to somewhere around .500 every year would actually be a step forward. Those guys both went to a bunch of bowls. That would be a step forward. They've both won and run programs in the NE. You can add Rhule and Golden as well, I agree.

Bottom line, if you agree that this is a really key hire for the university, why are we gambling? Why don't we go with the candidate that has the highest floor and if we get sick of 6 or 7 win seasons (which we will) then we try to hit a home run on the next hire.

It depends -- For one, his small buyout could save the university money if he struggles massively. We all agree that's a possibility, right? Secondly, he only exercises that buyout if he does enough in two years to get the interest he thinks he'll get from the big boys. Is that a great scenario for us? No, but we will have an intriguing offensive system installed and two years of relative success to pimp to our next coaching hire. Plus, if we love him and he's doing pretty well, there's nothing suggesting that SU couldn't pay him huge money to try and retain him.

Anyway, I agree, less than ideal. But how much do you like him as a potential head coach? I think that's really the question. If you think he is truly destined to get offered by all the big boys in 2-3 years, don't you want to get a couple years out of him on the way up?

Well sure, when you have Tom Brady, you can do whatever you want.

Syracuse hasn't recruited a QB that could sniff Tom's jock strap in years.
