are there any specific coaching moves or non-moves Red made or did not make that concern you. Was it his substitution pattern playing 10 guys on any given night, etc. Was it something else. Did he draw up a play you did not like, was it switching to a zone occasionally, not switching to a zone often enough, please elaborate.
 
Great question grepal. I have wondered what the big issue is with Autry. I hear substitution patterns but to me those are game to game depending on who is playing well and who is not. Coaches always ride the hot hand and have players that get a longer leash than others. That happens all the time, including JB when he coached. One of the biggest complaints with JB was that he played too short a rotation and chronic complaints about the zone defense and how it affected recruiting. Red has changed the latter and I think it has helped bump up our recruiting. A lot of high level athletes in particular don't want to play a zone and I'm sure opposing coaches used it as a recruiting issue against SU.
 
My concerns about Autry as head coach short version:
1. Ability to adjust to in game events
2. Inability to establish a rotation
3. Overall defensive game plan. Doesn’t create turnovers, dictate tempo or run solid pick and roll coverage.
4. Poor media skills

You left out the literal #1 thing: Zero team identity on O, D, and overall.

It's completely unclear what it is we're even trying to do. At all.
So, how can he recruit and coach to that, when there's no there, there?!

#3 especially for me. But my beef along with yours was help defense. Help defense means just a step towards the driver and reaching to his dribbling hand. (With an eye still on your assignment). If it was taught at all it was: Not taught well, not prioritized, or players were incapable, or just lazy. It was frustrating. Agree with media skill too.

I think our biggest problem is we had “good” players, not ultra competitive or “clutch“ players. Just not “winners”.

2 years ago people were blaming Mintz as much as Red for our season. (no where near the criticism this year). I’m hoping a real pg again makes Red a “better coach”

We had a team identity. Celebrating too much on made shots, then forgetting to play defense, and missing key free throws. And then not seeming to be too upset about the loss. We did those things with incredible regularity! (2nd half blown leads in ACC games were a carbon copy of each other). Sadly that is our identity

This is what the root cause of so many problems. An on court general makes a huge difference. I'm not saying Autry can coach but he's not the captain of the team.

The team captain is supposed to earn that honor through hard work.

Great posts, all things I had discussed w friends during the season. No plan either side of ball. While #4 may not be the most critical, neither Red or Griff come across well in their radio time, in my opinion

Regarding Paragraph 3

How would you say we fair to Houston’s defense?
 
One of Red’s biggest strength’s this year is that the team seemed to never once quit on him. That’s an indication that players like playing for him and want to see him succeed. One can question some of his substitutions and rotations, but it was refreshing in many ways to see a new system.

I’d also add our players whining about any perceived missed call; even at the detriment of getting back on defense

I don't think it's so much that. I think it's more so that most of these players were playing for the portal and the display for good offers. It's the new reality

"Never once quit" if you're looking at only the offensive side of the game, maybe.

In 33 games, they lost by 20 points or more 6 times. That is most certainly "quitting".

And, for good measure, they lost another 5 games on top of that by 10-19 points.

One-third of the entire schedule, we lost in blowouts.

No kidding. I guess I would flip it back to the poster who asked, and ask them what one thing that he does well?

All of these can be fixed with experience.

I couldnt care less about the media aspect

Im not sure that's indicative of quitting - Red Auerbach ain't winning with Carlos at PG and our entire lineup - than factor in the two best players missed a lot of time

The more you know.

And one more lesson, not everything is a linear progression. Sometimes when you suck at something, you don't improve beyond a minimum threshold.
