Fran is making these kinds of decisions and he “gets it”. Red makes the same decisions and “he’s out of touch”.

They both have the same relative philosophy, just different budgets.

Red’s portal decisions last year were not good. This year Kline has helped and the budget is bigger. I’m giving the hoops guys some leeway.

I know its not what you meant, but the ultimate portal decision is always from the player. If guys weren't interested in playing for Red coming off his 1st year, we (evidently) did not have the money to sway them.

That seems like what many knowledgeable people on here have been saying. These are some of the player costs I’ve seen thrown around here and online. Do people think they’re accurate?

That’s like $7.5 million.

So shouldn’t we have like $2-2.5 million left? That’s a lot of dough. Shouldn’t we be able to pay for Deng or another stretch 4 and another center?

Are those numbers founded on anything? Not being snarky—just wondering if you've seen specific information.

This whole megillah is ridiculous. It's now a professional league, yet unlike every(?) other pro league, we can't know the salaries? So, a few insiders know some of the numbers, but not all, and then we get contradicting intel from insiders vs the AD? It has been declared here many times that 'money isn't a problem this year,' 'we have money,' and then the AD says 'we're not where we want to be,' and the story about the 'NIL tiers' comes out and people are still saying 'we're in a good place,' but also that 'no, we're not in the top tier, and we're not in the second tier, but we're solidly in the third tier,' and the third tier could have 200 teams in it...

I'm just going to stop calling this ridiculous/stupid/insane and start calling it "an adventure."

Have we already moved on or has he already moved on? It is funny because less than 2 weeks ago, a recruiting service stated Jerry Deng was 90-95%committed to Syracuse.

I wish all these payments were transparent but there’s no way I see JJ earning less than Will Kyle. JJ averaged 18/4/3 and was honorable mention all ACC. I think he’s somewhere between Donnie and Kingz

On top of that anyone watching the games should of noticed the difference with intensity on defense and players were more or less playing up to their ability

But, there are, typically, salary ranges for most positions. Job postings typically contain salary numbers. It’s not as much of a mystery in the corp world as here. Just now the speculation on JJ was double what was claimed as the reality.

Secondly, and more importantly/relevantly, we’re talking about sports contracts.

This isn’t a ’normal’ job. Somehow, in the hundred years of professional contracts, problems have been dealt with.

How are college programs supposed to deal with the new and variable dynamics of this lawless NIL era? If you offer your own player a number, and they accept it in the first week after the season concludes… and then you only later find out who is leaving your program and the holes you Need to fill… and then a month later, new players are just entering the portal… and then a booster comes up with a mega cash infusion….

Why would you be constricted against what you could offer a player you didn’t even know would be available, with money you didn’t even know you were going to have? If you’re JJ and said I’m good with 650k in March, and then in April the team has a chance to sign someone who might make the difference between Bubble and an 8 seed, and that means the other guy gets more money than you… you’re going to try to renegotiate? Someone said something about holding out.… Okay, sure. Egos need to be managed. Like in every other sport. Baseball has guys making the all star team in their first or second years, making peanuts, while underperforming veterans make a mint from the DL. Thats just life (sports).

UNLV just got a commitment from Nass Cunningham from Alabama. Deng and Cunningham play the same position and have a very similar style of play. It would seem Deng and Cunningham don’t fit together on a roster (complete speculation)

Maybe our chances with Deng aren’t done yet…
