Class of 2023 PF Jerry Deng (NY / GA) Portal to NC State

He shows a lot of potential and having a 6’10” wing coming off the bench that can defend, rebound and has a developing offensive game seems like a great piece. He is also the reigning WAC freshman of the year but played at 6’7”-6’8”. I do think the step up in completion could be tough but I do think his game translates.

If we don’t get Deng, getting Bristow is a good addition.
where do you see 6'10" ?? He's listed as 6'8".

I believe the CBS article was referencing NIL only. The numbers you reference and replies to is NIL combined with the house mandated money.
Not sure that’s the case. UVA was listed and they stated before that article came out they had around 9 million to spend total.

This is where I originally read it.

Only posting this so people can’t double down and say we are still poor.

yea i was specifically talking about the cbs article about the schools with more than $10m nil.
So am I. It's rev share too if you read what they wrote about UVA last month.

Seems like it’s time to move on from Deng

I'm not. I don't know what he wants. All I am saying that if we walked away from Deng, and I don't know that we did or didn't, because he wants what we think is too much money, we are doing the right thing. What if he wants more money than Freeman is getting? Just give it to him?
Fran is making these kinds of decisions and he “gets it”. Red makes the same decisions and “he’s out of touch”.

They both have the same relative philosophy, just different budgets.

Red’s portal decisions last year were not good. This year Kline has helped and the budget is bigger. I’m giving the hoops guys some leeway.

If your numbers are close to accurate I would rather take the $ 7 - 800K that is available and get a legit center who could compete with Kyle for minutes.

That guy who was on our radar earlier at center, the local kid, has an NIL estimate of $1.2M on that website.

Yes, I think that's right. You know a lot more about this stuff than me. I just share what I read online. You guys on the inside know what's real.

I'm fine if we want to pass on Deng, but don't post next year that "well, we thought we would have had Deng" if making excuses like people did with Leffew last year.

I guess it’s a matter of interpretation. I just glanced thru the 10 million dollar club article and the whole thing was about nil and donors. Either poorly written or they’re confused.

You spent all season rightfully saying how bad they whiffed on portal evaluations after glazing the Carlos and Davis pickups as bargain price wins preseason

Now it was just they didn't have enough money and Kline makes the difference?

The hoops guys will need to prove it before I give them any benefit of the doubt. But as I said above, Deng isnt a deal breaker to me, just don't use it as an excuse.

Could be. The articles contradict each other.

Quick question. are you on board with this year’s acquisitions so far? Better than last year?

Ultimately better, yes. If we can't get better talent than last year's 14-19 team, that would be a problem.

My goal (and everyone's this year) should be getting into the tourney. Not a top 4 seed...just making the tourney...

So with that goal in mind...
Loved keeping Freeman. Loved George.
JJ is what he is, hopefully improves with better talent around him.
Kingz can shoot and you need a shooter in 2005 College Basketball.
Freshman are freshman, whatever we get from them will be good.

Center is a MAJOR question mark whether people here want to admit it or not. The Ga Tech kid isn't a tourney team level rotation player, imo, so basically you have to hope UCLA kid can return from injury and perform at a level he's never done before. I'm on board with prioritizing PG over Center though, so is what it is, but with the reality of the situation in mind, you are going to need to get another proven college level scorer/defender, which I believe Deng is.

If the money doesn't work, fine, then we need someone else at that level.

If we don't, tourney hopes will come down to if the freshman can play at a high enough level, which doesn't feel like a great bet in the current era.

You have players coming in who at least are athletic enough to press, and run a fast break. It's up to the staff to get them to play as a team. Having a true point guard should help offense.
Part of JB'S problem the last 9 or 10 years was trying to have combo guards run his offense.
That led to too much iso offense, and end of clock bad forced shots.

I think it’s an unforced error to prioritize Deng, decide a few dollars we can afford is the difference between hiring him or letting him go… Then, instead of filling the 6th man spot with a proven scorer from the ACC, they get a scrawny freshman from the WAC instead, who will likely never play for Syracuse, for additional savings.

What are they saving money for? Red won’t be here next season if anything goes wrong. I’m sure the next coach will appreciate the extra NIL money…

I’d argue there is already competition for who gets to be in the 6-8 spots and a kid like the Tarleton State kid is also a solid option to pursue. Deng seemed like a great fit and option 1 for the last true impact transfer but Its at least comforting that is where we are at right now vs trying to find the last starting spot.

Whoever we add as long as they are in the caliber of player Deng /Tarleton kid then that’s a good thing.
