Class of 2023 PF Jerry Deng (NY / GA) Portal to NC State

UNLV just got a commitment from Nass Cunningham from Alabama. Deng and Cunningham play the same position and have a very similar style of play. It would seem Deng and Cunningham don’t fit together on a roster (complete speculation)

Maybe our chances with Deng aren’t done yet…

He may be taking too Deng long to decide,
and teams are taking other guys who are willing to commit.
Now.

Also may be asking for too much above fair market value,
so teams aren’t in a rush to throw that kinda $ at a somewhat 1-dimensional role player.

I think this is exactly it. He has asked for a lot more money than I believe the market
wants to pay him. More than we want to pay him for sure. He may wake up some morning
without a chair.

100%…I wonder if this reignites anything with Syracuse or if we’ve already moved on to Bristow and/or Valencia

Hopefully we have moved on, if he really wanted to be here he would have signed already.
Not a team player so go somewhere else.

Once again, too strong. He is looking to cash in and maybe for the last time in his life. That is just looking out for yourself. Just as all the rest of the guys on our team have done.

Deng wants to start. We want him as a rotation piece. This isn’t hard. Time to move on.
what i dont understand is how do they know for sure that Deng wouldnt be a top 2 forward on this roster?

i get it that the expectation is that freeman is the #1 and that the freshman White is the likely #2...after that guys like souare and womack are reserves...and you could also go with kingz or maybe even anthony as forwards as well...

but for me...it is far from clear that deng wouldnt be a top 2 forward amongst that group...I personally beleive that he actually would be, along with freeman

that said,i understand the way this works when you are not Duke or Kentucky...in order to get players you have to promise playing time/starting status...so the "starters" have already been selected...before the season even starts...

this is problemtaic for many reasons...firstly, the assumptions can and will likely be wrong about the pecking order you imagine in your head...and that is exactly what has happened in rds first 2 seasons...he has grossly miscalculated the pecking orders of his rosters thus far, imo...

i get it that it is what it is...this is how it goes...spots are promised not earned these days...but i dont like it...and I think it leads to worse baslketball teams as a result...the prognisticatuon aspect of putting a roster together shuldnt be as important as it is...its everyhtjing now...and theres little room to plan for contingencies these days...

Kingz is gonna be the 3. Deng would definitely be first forward sub.

Wonderful doesn't mean we have to go along with it. Kids good but not worth chasing

I would sell Deng as the "6th starter". When we want to go 5 out, can move Freeman to the 5 and leave the lane wide open for George and JJ to drive.

I really do not know anything more about Deng versus Valencia other than what I read or see on this board.

From what I glean is Deng is a real good outside shooter but not more of anything else. To me, this sounds like an experienced Chris Bell who just left the team. Deng was almost a Syracuse portal commit but money seems to be the sticking point. Deng thinks he is worth more but the Syracuse staff have reservations on giving a non starter that much money. Deng has two years of experience playing at Florida State.

Regarding Valencia, while very thin for his size, he is also a good outside shooter but has more athleticism than Deng. This implies he would fit better than Deng but is less experience at this level.

Both players would be a good fit for next years’ squad. While they each have two years of eligibility available there is no guarantee that either would be more than one and done due to what the portal can offer.

The coaching staff would take either player but probably only one whomever commits first.

I don't think it's fair to say a guy isn't a team player just because he's asking for a lot (and maybe too much). What Lampkin did "rubbed" most of us the wrong way with his negotiation last year. However, he played his heart out and played harder than arguably anyone else on the roster.

What Lampkin did was different from Deng or any other portal guy holding out for more money. Lampkin made a deal on NIL and committed, had the team built around him as the centerpiece transfer for a second year head coach who needed results or would lose his dream job at his alma mater, waited until all the other serviceable centers were committed to other programs, and then threatened to leave unless given significantly more money which wasn't in the budget and we had to go out and get. Deng and other guys in the portal are right to hold out to try to maximize their earnings. It's smart of him. On the other hand, anyone who makes a deal and then much later threatens to pull out, at a time it would screw their teammates, coach, fans, and the program, is wrong for that.

Houston ran a million deep - everyone played - Ginobili never played the first 6 mins - he also played the last 6 mins of every game - if ur playing 20 plus mins that’s all u should be guaranteed

Yeah, I don't disagree at all. I think you're missing my point. I'm just saying that money negotiations often don't have anything to do with a guy being a team player. As much as I didn't like what Lampkin did, once he finally did get here and money wasn't in the mix, he was all about winning and playing his heart out.

I know we're on the same page and agree. Was just sharing my opinion on the topic of NIL holdouts and replied to your post.
