Well if we want Dior to come I know a certain scrap guy who has no problem throwing cash at people.

How does this work exactly? Does Marek get 25K? Does Dior get 150k? I can see how college students get mad at each other and jealous over this. It's sad that the NBA pretends to care about the integrity of the college game because clearly they don't. And also how do college teams sort this out. Does Kentucky offer a kid 1 million to go there versus 500k to go to Syracuse? I see this eventually happening.

They should just hold all the money in trust for these kids w stipend for expenses and to help families somewhat. Part of being in college is being broke. Give the kids units for longer they stay. Power 5 should unite and leverage their collective spending to get more ad dollars to funnel to kids.

So, the NCAA/Universities should steal their money and dole it out as they see fit. I know most in higher education believe in the inability of the masses to govern their own lives, but this is ridiculous. Would kids of well to do parents have to give the money the family gives them into the pool? What about kids who work jobs, or are TAs or GAs? Should someone look after how they spend their money?
Why should these governing bodies, which are generally comprised of people who could not compete in the real economic market place, have governance over money earned by someone else? We barely do that with money we give to people for not working, and you want to do it to people who are.
The nanny-state mentality that has gripped this country makes me ill. No one should care if the kid spends it on hookers, jewelry and cars. Its his money. If he spends it badly, hopefully it will be lessons learned, for the next payday. If he doesn't learn the lessons, oh well.

Already a lot of these kids that just sell a shoutout on Instagram or snapchat...imagine paying someone hundreds or thousands to shoot out your name once.

so, if i'm a top hs kid, i make a public "finalist" list of 10-12 schools
i design cheap t-shirts for each: "moqui syracuse," "moqui duke," "moqui kentucky" and so on
i offer them online for $25 but i only produce shirts as they are paid for, use zazzle or whatever.
whichever fan base purchase the most, i attend. i don't refund any money to the losers.

We’d get every recruit. Nobody does t-shirts like Syracuse fans.

Theres lots on here that dont understand how social media works and how these kids can and are making money off simple things such as shout outs lol.

That's nuts. For so many reasons.
If the thing is the kid is allowed to pursue 'deals they can strike on their own,' there's no way to monitor what they're actually getting. A booster/binnisman can say, 'We at Company X are giving this player $10,000 for autograph signing and event appearances and endorsement of our Hoosywhatsits' via the approved NCAA clearinghouse. And then since there's already that connection/relationship between player and binnisman, he can slip him/the parents a briefcase.

The NCAA is going to be tasked with determining endorsement values, which will be context and market-based. LA and NY kids can make more than Alabama kids? Is there going to be a scale that says top 20 kids can make X, and everyone else can only make Y? Then what happens to the #84 kid who actually becomes more valuable than the flameout #4? Do you get more money the longer you're in college? More, based on number of games won? Based on tv ratings?

The NCAA couldn't monitor when there weren't supposed to be any payments, and now they're going to be better cops and investigators? Do they have an incentive to keep/make the playing field level? Or, is it like in the pros, where everyone always says it's better for the NBA if LA and NYC have strong teams? So, they'll favor the blue bloods and traditional powers?

The sad thing is, when a kid of 'limited means' suddenly started buying a car and diamond earrings, it was a clue that something nefarious was going on. Now, there won't be any clues when the whole system is subverted, because they'll all have cars and diamond earrings.

Heck, there's going to be GoFundMe campaigns for alum and boosters to pile up larger and larger paydays and bids for recruits.

It's going to suck for college ball.

I don't see how this does anything to help college hoops. Allowing for payment due to likeness that is managed vs the G League allowing for that and more plus sizeable deals to go with. Kids still will have to want the college hoops experience over anything else.

Courts, to date, have said they are not employees. Also, Unions stifle economic competition.

I think you might be wrong on both counts. The courts ruled in favor of Grad Assistants being covered as employees, paid fairly and being able to create a union. Athletes are not far behind.

While unions have their bad points, its a way for employees to get compensated fairly. They get the players (not just the stars) paid as much as possible and medical and retirement benefits.

Unions don't seem to have hurt the NFL or NBA. The NCAA will adjust.

I don’t think this would be a foundation for a union because it’s outside money not compensation coming from the NCAA or the institutions

I don’t get it.
So, our courtside patron/fanatic can offer the top 5 players a waste management endorsement deal for 2 million dollars each to entice them to SU?

I’m legit asking how this works and doesn’t become boosters bidding for talent.

I work in college athletics. This is why it's been taking the NCAA so long to approve this. The guidelines they need to put in place involve a lot of structure.

I'm only 28 but my lord I cant keep up with it. Dont use any social media minus Twitter to monitor emerging trends

The one good thing I've accepted is that if it's going this way then we will at least be good and one of the top destinations for big time athletes. Collegiate sports will basically be pro sports teams to a certain extent but with kids that still attend school and hopefully will end up having some school pride when playing for their school they attend...only difference is they will be making bank off their skills and image. I've come to terms with it and cuse is my team. Be it college/professional/semi-college-semi-professional whatever u want to call it they will still be my team that I want to succeed...and we are in a better position to do that for basketball then tons of other programs. Just my opinion.

Plus, instead of only having to deal with the sketchy underworld of Agents once you’ve declared for the draft as a collegian, high school sophomores will be dealing with agents and attorneys, and getting ripped off and exploited before they even get to their 18th birthdays. That lawsuit thing Zion is going through even now? That’ll be happening before a kid graduates high school.

There can’t be enough structure for it to go unexploited. Heckfire, the US gubmit just set up loans and stimulus programs, and they’ve already been perverted. Granted, they did have to act quickly... and the ‘leadership’—— oh, no. Wrong forum.

DIOR JOHNSON.

That’s a cut in pay for Kentucky!

General Motors says hello.

The floodgates were shut for a long time. Now that they are open there is no stopping. The playing field will be tilted to the biggest markets. Eventually college ball will become less attractive to fans. Perhaps the NBA will take a role in the P-5 teams.

Trouble is they are adapting in the wrong direction. Getting further and further from their central mission. Oh well.
I agree. There was a chance to skim the filth from the top, but instead, the NCAA just tainted the whole pot.
