The state playoffs began in 1993. The Classes were A, B, C and D. Class AA was created in 1996. There are 11 sections in New York State:

Section 1: Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester counties .
Section 2: Capital District
Section 3: Central New York
Section 4: Southern Tier
Section 5: Genesee Valley
Section 6: Western NY
Section 7: Champlain Area
Section 8: Nassau
Section 9: Orange, Sullivan, Ulster counties
Section 10: St. Lawrence Area
Section 11: Suffolk

Sections 8 & 11 do not participate in the NYS playoffs. Sections 7 and 10 have so few schools that they have no schools in certain categories and have preliminary elimination games to get their schools into the playoffs. In some years in some categories, the entry is just listed as “7-10”, implying that the sections were considered together and the best school from either was issued an invitation. Here are the won-loss records of each section in each classification in state playoff games, with the number of titles in parenthesis.

SECTION 1 Total: 147-72(25) Class D: 28-16(4) Class C: 38-12(8) Class B: 38-13(7) Class A: 25-17(4) Class AA:18-14(3)

Comments: The best high school football in New York State, (north of New York City), has historically been played in Sections 1 ,2 and 5, (the Hudson River area and the Rochester Area) but Section has been coming on strong in recent years. Central New York has been slipping badly over that time, not winning a title at any level since 2007. The North Country just doesn’t have enough population to compete with the other sections and neither does Section 9, (basically the Adirondacks and the Catskills). The State Playoffs are set up on an East-West basis so Section 3 teams play Section 4 teams, against who they are fairly well-matched and then play the winner of Section 5 vs. Section 6, which is tougher. Sections 1 & 2 get Section 7, 9 or 10 in the first round which is kind of a walk-over. Then they typically face each other in the semis. The teams in the “West” would seem to have a harder road than the teams in the “East”. One wonders if, should sections 8&11 stop “playing with themselves”, there might be a “North-South” look to the playoffs and Section 3 might do better.

It’s interesting to see how some sections do in each class. Assuming that success rate is directly related to the number of schools in each class, Section 4, (the Southern Tier) has little to offer at the level of the smallest and the biggest schools but is pretty competitive in between. Section 3 for some reason, is the opposite, the best in the state in Class D and better than you’d think in AA but mediocre in C and less than that in A-B. Section 7, (Lake Champlain) is pretty good in Class B but lousy elsewhere, indicating that most of their schools are at that level. Sections 5 and 6, (basically Western New York), are pretty good down the line.

Here is a list of the most successful teams in the state, ranked by victories in the state tournament, regardless of class, (many of them have played in more than one class). They are listed in order of victories. If that’s a tie, the first tie-breaker is state titles, (including large or small school poll championships from 1969-92) and the second the number of losses.

1) Caldonia-Mumford (Section 5) 18-4 (9 state titles)
2) Dobbs Ferry (1) 19-3 (7)
3) Rochester Aquinas (5) 17-5 (5)
4) Rye (1) 16-4 (2)
5) Chenango Forks (4) 17-9 (2)
6) New Rochelle (1) 15-7 (4)
7) Tuckahoe (1) 15-8 (2)
8) Cambridge (2) 14-10 (1)
9) Peru (7) 14-13 (1)
10) Hornell (5) 13-3 (3)
11 Harrison (1) 12-5 (2)
12) Jamestown (6) 11-1 (3)
13) Webster Schroeder (5) 11-3 (3)
(Webster High School split into Webster Schroeder and Webster Thomas in 2002. “Webster” had won the 2001 AA title and when Webster Schroeder win the 2002 AA title all references I could find were to their winning their “second straight state title”, so I added Webster Schroeder’s record to that of “Webster” and gave Webster Thomas their own record. Webster Thomas is 3-2 with no title so the overall “Webster” record would be 14-5 (3) if you added them all together.)
14) Lackawanna (6) 11-5 (3)
15) Amsterdam (2), Troy (2) and Walton (4) 11-5 (2)
17) Edgemont (1) 10-2 (3) and Maine-Endwell (4) 10-2 (3)
19) Onondaga (3) 10-3 (3)
20) Nyack (1) 10-4 (2)

The New York State Sportswriter’s Association has had rankings since 1969. Originally they ranked all schools together. In 1970 they were divided, (as they should be) between “large” schools and “small” schools. In 1988 they went to Class A, B and “C-D”. Here are the teams, (with section numbers) that won in the polls for the years prior to the start of the state tournament in 1993:

The following teams have won state titles, (I am including poll champions from 1969-92- if a poll champion was from section 8 or 11, I treated the highest rated team from sections 1-7 and 9-10 as the “poll champion“- if there had been a tournament in those years, they‘d have been in it and winning the poll was the equivalent of winning the tournament in those days):

Section 10:
None

Section Three always starts out by playing Section 4 in the first round We are 14-3 against them in Class AA, 10-9 in Class A, 9-11 in Class B, (thank you, Chenango Forks, who beat our teams seven times in a row), 8-11 in Class C and 10-10 in Class D, (Section coaches in Classes C and D voted not to send a team to the state playoffs in the first year, 1993). Over all Section 3 is 51-44 vs. Section 4. But we are only 9-16 since we last won a state title in 2007 and have lost 8 of 10 in the last two years.

If they survive Section 4, the Section 3 champs play the winner of the Section 5 and 6, (basically the Rochester and Buffalo areas) first round game. We’ve done well in Class D, 6-4 (3-2 vs. each), and held our own, 4-4, (3-3 vs. Section 5, 1-1 vs. Section 6), in Class C but been dominated in Class B, 2-7, (1-5 vs. Section 6, 1-2 vs. Section 5), Class A, 2-8, (2-5 vs. Section 5, 0-3 vs. Section 6) and Class AA, 4-10, (3-7 vs. Section 5, 1-3 vs. Section 6). Overall vs. Section 5 they are 12-18 vs. Section 5 and 6-14 vs. Section 6.

The following Section III teams have cleared the quarterfinal hurdle vs. Section 4 and survived the semifinal carnage vs. Sections 5 and 6 to play for the state championship:

1993 Class B Chittenango lost to Section 1 Yorktown 13-23
1996 Class A Whitesboro lost to Section 2 Troy 13-27
1997 Class C CBA lost to Section1 Dover 26-32 (2OT)
1997 Class D West Canada beat Section 1 Bronxville 22-14
2000 Class A Fulton lost to Section 1 Nyack 20-34
2000 Class D Dolgeville beat Section 2 Fort Edward 55-3
2001 Class D Onondaga beat Section 1 Dobbs Ferry 35-7
2002 Class C Onondaga beat Section 1 Briarcliffe 35-6
2002 Class D Dolgeville lost to Section 1 Dobbs Ferry 35-38
2003 Class D Onondaga beat Section 2 Cambridge 41-21
2004 Class AA CBA beat Section 1 New Rochelle 41-35
2004 Class D Weedsport beat Section 1 Tuckahoe 22-11
2006 Class AA Auburn beat Section 9 Monroe-Woodbury 27-26 (1OT)
2007 Class AA West Genesee beat Section 9 Monroe-Woodbury 42-21
2007 Class C Bishop Ludden beat Section 1 Dobbs Ferry 21-16
2008 Class B Oneida lost to section 1 Rye 12-16
2010 Class C General Brown lost to Section 1 Bronxville 14-34

Section 3 is 10-7 in state championship games. They lost their first three, then had an incredible 10-2 streak before losing the last two. They are 6-5 vs. Section 1, 2-1 vs. Section 2 and 2-0 vs. Section 9. So if we can survive the semi-finals our chances of winning a state title are pretty good.

This year’s fields:

CLASS AA
(Sections 7 and 10 have no Class AA teams)

Section 1- White Plains 9-1 (308-143) NYSSWA #17 Max Preps 15/1236 0-0 in the state tournament, 1 (poll) title
Has a bye.

Section 2- Albany CBA 9-1 (376-117) NYSSWA #12 Max Preps 6/651 1-1, 0 titles vs.
Section 9- Monroe-Woodbury 10-0 (407-129) NYSSWA #7 Max Preps 3/299 10-8, 2 titles

Section 3- Syracuse CBA 10-0 (441-142) NYSSWA #2 Max Preps 4/364 10-8, 1 title
Section 4- Elmira Free Academy 9-0 (382-114) NYSSWA #18 Max Preps 7/723 1-5, 0 titles

Section 5- Aquinas Institute 10-0 (327-69) NYSSWA #1 Max Preps 1/175 17-5, 5 titles
Section 6- Jamestown 10-0 (542-178) NYSSWA #6 Max Preps 5/560 11-1, 3 titles

Comments: Syracuse CBA lost in the semi-finals last year and have 19 of 22 starters back. They’ve dominated everyone they’ve played except Henninger, whom they beat twice. This is the best chance we’ve had to win Class AA, (or any class) since the last Section III champion in 2007. But it won’t be easy. EFA won’t be a push-over and in the West, Acquinas is the one team in the state ranked ahead of the Brothers and they are taking on the state’s highest scoring team, Jamestown, who is averaging 54 points a game. On the other side of the bracket is the always formidable Monroe-Woodbury. T here’s also the possibility of CBA playing CBA in the final.

CLASS A
(Section 7 has no Class A schools)

Section 10- Massena 7-2 (261-165) NYSSWA NR Max Preps 357/9695 1-4, 0 titles
Section 2- Queensbury 10-0 (380-124) NYSSWA #1 Max Preps 19/1404 4-2, 0 titles

Section 1- Somers 10-1 (396-113) NYSSWA #7 Max Preps 22/1559 0-2, 0 titles
Section 9- Cornwall 9-1 (391-189) NYSSWA #3 Max Preps 60/3066 5-8, 0 titles

Section 3 Carthage 9-1 (310-187) NYSSWA #16 Max Preps 64/3123 1-2, 0 titles
Section 4 Union-Endicott 7-3 (398-222) NYSSWA #18 Max Preps 38/2300 2-9, 2 titles

Section 5 East Ridge 9-1 (317-191) NYSSWA #11 Max Preps 39/2353 0-2, 0 titles
Section 6 Williamsville North 8-3 (257-107) NYSSWA #12 Max Preps 36/2101 0-0, 0 titles

Comment: Section 3 has never own this classification but none of the teams in the Class A tournament have ever won it since the state playoffs started in 1993. Union- Endicott won a couple of poll titles in the old days. So this one is wide open. There are some good teams here- Somers and Queensberry seme very good. But there’s nobody who can’t be competed with.

CLASS B
(Section 7’s Beekmantown beat Section 10’s Franklin Academy 51-14 in the premliminary)

Section 7- Beekmantown 6-4 (358-226) NYSSWA UR Max Preps 237/7427 0-3, 0 titles
Section 2- Schalmont 10-0 (429-31) NYSSWA #4 Max Preps 11/998 4-3, 0 titles

Section 1 Pleasantville 10-1(256-80) NYSSWA #9 Max Preps 101/4388 0-0, 3 titles
Section 9 Marlboro 10-0 (414-124) NYSSWA #2 Max Preps 42/2428 1-2, 0 titles

Section 3 Cazenovia 10-0 (400-124) NYSSWA #3 Max Preps 10/903 1-6, 0 titles
Section 4 Maine-Endwell 10-0 (489-88) NYSSWA #1 Max Preps 13/1073 10-2, 3 titles

Section 5 Geneva 9-1 (322-132) NYSSWA #7 Max Preps 59/3033 6-2, 0 titles
Section 6 DePew 8-2 (299-188) NYSSWA #8 Max Preps 43/2465 0-1, 0 titles

Comments: Bug, meet windshield. Cazenovia, a major power in Section 3 has never done well in the state playoffs. Maine-Endwell won the Class A title in 2011, then were reassigned to Class B last year and won that title, beating the Lakers 50-14 along the way. That team was ranked by Max Preps as the #1 overall team in New York State, ahead of the Class AA and Class A teams. They outscored their opposition by an average of 56-10. This year’s Maine-Endwell team has only outscored their opponents 49-9. They opened by beating Class A Nottingham 31-7 and Class AA Binghamton 35-14. What’s odd is that, although the NYS sportswriters have the Spartans at #1 in Class B this year, Max Preps rates the Lakers ahead of them and, in front of ever Class B team in the state. Could the pull off the upset? This is another Class in which we’ve never won the title. But there’s a first time for everything.

CLASS C
(Ogdensburg Free Academy of Section 10 beat Section 7’s Saranac Lake 27-19 in the prelim)

Section 10- Ogdensburg Free Academy 9-1 (320-209) NYSSWA #10 Max Preps 232/7355 0-3, 0 titles
Section 2- Hoosick Falls 10-0 (378-27) NYSSWA #1 Max Preps 47/2549 7-5, 1 title

Section 1 Rye Neck 9-0 357-63) NYSSWA #5 Max Preps 27/2165 0-0, 0 titles
Section 9 Burke Catholic 9-1 (388-145) NYSSWA #11 Max Preps 107/4639 0-1, 0 titles

Section 3 General Brown 9-1 (317-149) NYSSWA #6 Max Preps 67/3243 3-5, 0 titles
Section 4 Chenango Forks 9-1 (428-113) NYSSWA #3 Max Preps 30/1970 17-9, 2 titles

Section 5 Wayland-Cohocton 9-1 (380-106) NYSSWA #8 Max Preps 21/1528 0-0, 0 titles
Section 6 Cleveland Hill 10-0 (308-58) NYSSWA #4 Max Preps 83/3921 0-3, 0 titles

Comments: Chenango Forks has faced Section 3 Class B and C champions 10 times in the last 12 years and won 9 of those games. But the one they didn’t win was to general brown in 2010. Maybe the Lions can beat the Blue Devils again. Hoosick Falls, the defending champ, shouldn’t be under-estimated. Last year they has an astonishing ratio of points for and against (462-44) but people assumed it was a lack of quality opposition. Then they face Hornell in the title game, who was going for their 52 straight victory and 4th consecutive state championship. The Panthers won, 34-21. Now they’ve won 23 in a row And are going for their second straight title. Hornell by the way, fell all the way to 1-7 this year, quite a comedown for a program that had been so dominant for so long.

CLASS D
(Moriah of Section 7 beat Tupper Lake of Section 10 29-14 in the preliminary round)

Comments: Moriah lost 0-50 to Rensselaer, the Section 2 champ, last year so don’t expect them to advance beyond the first round. Tuckahoe has a mediocre record but they made it to the state finals last year after knocking off Chester 34-18 in the first round and should not be under-estimated. Chester is on a roll though. They lost their opener to O’Neill, a Class C team by 5, then won 8 in a row by an average score of 50-6. Tioga crushed Sandy Creek last year, 54-13 before losing 6-7 to Randolph in the semis. They have had a strange season in which they won one game by a 1-0 forfeit and won their section by beating Unatego 80-53. That’s right, 80-53. That wasn’t a basketball game. The Tigers ran for 614 yards and 10 scores but gave up 572 yards passing, including 7TDs.They blew out to a 59-12 halftime lead and played reserves throughout the second half which Unatego did not. The Spartans never got within the final 27 point margin. I’m not sure why Max Preps ranks Randolph behind Tioga and Red Jacket. They are the defending champs and undefeated. Nobody has gotten within 23 points of them all year and they are going for their fourth title. Sounds like a favorite to me. Herkimer will likely be one and done.

Thanks for providing these updates SWC. As a transplanted Section 6er, it's tough to follow the playoffs because the P(o)S only covers the Section 3 teams, with an occasional line showing some (but not all) of the other scores.

The state playoffs began in 1993. The Classes were A, B, C and D. Class AA was created in 1996. There are 11 sections in New York State:

Section 3 is 10-7 in state championship games. They lost their first three, then had an incredible 10-2 streak before losing the last two. They are 6-5 vs. Section 1, 2-1 vs. Section 2 and 2-0 vs. Section 9. So if we can survive the semi-finals our chances of winning a state title are pretty good.

And my little school in the boondocks has the most state titles out of them all in Section 3. Woo hoo! (And it wasn't just Mike Hart. They won the third one after he graduated, with Latavius Murray and Chris Hart leading that team.)

We also had something like 7 straight state titles in cross country, beginning with my senior year in 1976 (of which I was a co-captain).

Mike Hart was on all three Onondaga champions.

Latavius Murray was a senior in 2007 so he wouldn't have bene on any of the 2001-03 champions.
