Postgame Thoughts... Clemson

Anyone who watched that first half and believes that the right succession plan post-Boeheim is to promote someone from within the program is certifiably nuts. We need a clean break, an infusion of new ideas, and the adoption of a more contemporary style of play on BOTH ends of the floor.

Nothing will change until there is a complete break, a new approach is in place, and our players are actually coached how to execute half court offensive sets.

Oh, and can the new coach throw in a defensive adjustment once in awhile?

I agree it has gotten so bad that we need a clean break from all things JB that means no current assistants or even Hop we need a clean break and reenergize our program with new thoughts and ideas

I hope he leaves for his own sake. There aren’t any centers coming in. What are the chances he plays 30+ at the 5 next year again.
I wonder if he's considered playing in Europe?

Today I became a believer. This year’s Syracuse team is really bad. There is not one player I would put in the top half of ACC players at his position. 10-6. 6 games left unless postponed games are rescheduled, 4 on the road. Only positive is that the string of winning seasons should continue. Depressing.

Not sure I agree. Quincy certainly is. Griffin could be. Kadary projects as one.

BUT, the problem is that we've structured our entire offense not around those three, but around two slow, unathletic guards who don't shoot the ball well because they can't shake ACC caliber defenders. Seriously -- that's our offense.

I honestly wonder if our best lineup would be Kadary, Griffin, Dolezaj / Woody at , and Quincy in the middle -- even though he isn't a shotblocker.

I just can’t fathom what JB is seeing w/ this strategy that everyone else isn’t. The fact that he believes Buddy and JG3 not only give him the best chance to win big in our league, and that they’re seemingly indispensable, simply boggles the mind.

agree, if you are going to play 2-3 zone every minute of the season, it should be a three-quarter court 2-2-1 zone press into a 2-3.

It's a conservative press, it doesn't give up lay-ups unlike the embarrassing trunk monkey 1-2-1-1 full court which is an emergency press.

with the 2-2-1 maybe you get some steals, but by the time they get settled they have 18 seconds to test the zone.

It makes too much sense, but also probably too much coaching energy.

Yup. I really don’t understand why we don’t. You’re already in your basic alignment for the 2-3, so it’s really easy to drop without having guys have to run across the court to get to their spot.

He brought in Pitino to help at practice and then played it a couple times early in the season a few years ago, and then never again. Louisville bothered us with it for years.

Teams will continue to treat Buddy like honey to bees. He’ll continue to chuck up shots and we’ll get down big. That’s what we have left for the year. NIT at best.

Play Kadary and Woody. Limit Buddy and Joe and see if you can grow these kids for next year.

3 more wins to keep the streak alive. Maybe they'll get there.

Is it bad that I’m literally not fazed in the least, and watched a replay of the Hunger Games on TNT?
It took all of 5 minutes to see that the same-old, same-old was gonna be the story of this game.
Yeah, as i wrote in the game thread we were a bit “rusty”, but the bottomline remains that we are the most predictable team in cbb. We don’t switch defenses unless we absolutely have no choice, & then all we do is desperately press and hope it works.
On offense, any pressure in-your-face D rattles us and we take forever to get going. Rinse...and repeat.

Here's my state of apathy. I had stuff to do today and DVR'd the game. Checked the final score and erased DVR when I got home. I'm not arranging my schedule anymore around this stale product.

He won't be in shape to play more than 20 minutes. It can take several months to reach that level of stamina.
You believe he will need several months after missing 8 wks with an injury before he can play more than 20 mins in a game? Meaning you don't think he should play more than 20 mins in a game or he physically will not be able to play more than 20 mins in a game due to stamina?

Joe wins the Matt Stafford garbage time award.

Haha, yup. I don’t blame him though. He was doing what he’s supposed to do at the end...being aggressive against a D that had taken its foot off the gas.

But I really hope nobody (meaning coach)tries to put any stock in that when he’s trying to give reasons for why Joe is the starting PG.

I'm not a JG guy, but I really thought he came out with WAY more energy from the jump in the second half. A lot of those points came at the end, but it wasn't a stat stuffing event in any sort of nefarious way - seemed like a continuation from how he started the half. I thought he seemed prime for a good half regardless...he's not a PG though lol

In the first half he seemed like a bit of a dud

I’m just happy Kadary was able to get in a whole bunch of conditioning this week, especially since Thursday, in order to play more than 20 minutes.

This program isn’t dead but it might as well be. The longer we hang on to the past, the longer the future will be bleak. If JB retired at the end of this year, we’re still looking at 2-3+ years away from being competitive, and that’s optimistic. We have so much roster turnover needed, a whole new philosophy needed and frankly, have to hit a home run on a new hire. That’s a lot.

It’s long overdue for a new direction and enough is enough. The program cannot keep hanging on for dear life to stroke JB’s ego and let him place family over it. I hate what we’re watching and it simply hurts knowing and accepting what the program now is. We’re a few years from BC if we’re not proactive.

The argument about the final 4 recently is weird. Okay... just apply that final 4 to either 2010 or 2012 when we literally had champ level teams. One of those teams was far more worthy than almost any team we’ve had historically. Using that to justify mediocre play doesn’t make any sense.

Final four isn’t even that recent. When Deshaun and Shumpert were allegedly feuding and we went to the NIT, people weren’t saying, “hey it’s ok, we JUST went to the final four a half decade ago!”

We have been a bubble/NIT team since 2014-2015. That is a long time. We stink.
When we lost our rivals we lost our luster and our ability to recruit the top echelon. More than many like to admit our success depended on our rivalries with the likes of Georgetown, Ucon, Pitt, Nova... The ACC has no gravitas for us. Not saying that we had a better alternative, although I might have considered downgrading football and staying in the BE. I lean towards hoops and what we have suks.

And on that note, when we were in back to back NITs in 07 and 08, I don’t remember anybody saying “hey we JUST won the championship 5 years ago.” And that was a championship! Not just a final four.

The ACC has nothing to do with our recruiting.
Justin Champagnie said he was a huge Syracuse fan and is from Brooklyn. We didn’t offer him a scholarship.

Monte Morris wanted to come to SU and paid his own way to come to our elite camp and we didn’t offer him a scholarship.

Jalen Brunson was told on an unofficial visit to SU he wasn’t a fit and not offered a scholarship.

The ACC has done nothing to our recruiting. It’s been our own fault.
