Every offensive coorfinator has the mind set of taking what the defense gives you and attacking where you have an advantage. I think we put too much of a emphasis on the scheme. The offensive plays are common with 80% of college offenses. His O is based on the premise that you take what's given. That's great on paper but Ds have figured out two things.
First the ability to disguise what's given. This requires the O to make good and quick reads. Something that we haven't been doing well.
Second the Ds last year simply decided what they were going to give us and we couldn't take advantage of it.
Last point the Run pass option only works if your QB can pull it off. With Eric he was the primary threat which made it work. Tommy might pull off a run or 2 a game but everyone on the planet knows SU isn't going to win with TD running.
Long story short opposing Ds have Dino's O figured out. I truly believe the only way we win is with an excellent running game that allows Tommy the luxury to take shots or with a solid dual threat QB that maybe Shred is. If and it's a big if we can establish the run Dino has a chance to pull off 6 wins this year. I'm hoping for the best as he seems to be a great guy.
What makes Dino's offense unique is the tempo and strategy. His strategy is to pass the ball to set up the power run, where the defense has to worry about the deep shots first before trying to stop them from running the ball. When you do that. Offense can gash you with the power run game. When you don’t have those deep threats taking shots is meaningless. Defenders can focus on the run. Thats my beef with it. No matter what scheme you run if your offense can’t do the fundamentals things to execute you are in trouble. Particularly the offensive line
