For people worried about gaining Angeli meaning Fran loses the locker room, remember that Adam Banks was a cake eating Hawk and ultimately proved to be a true Mighty Duck thanks to the quality of his play and dedication to the game.

You get Angeli and does Pena come back?

Great point. Charlie Conway barely knew how to ice skate by the time Banks won gold for the US.

Bring in the best players possible and let them compete. It is what the big boys do, and what we should do if we want to continue improving the program. I’m all for this.

Exactly I don't see why some people are getting so upset about this. Well Fran said Collins was the starter who cares things change constantly in college sports as we have seen and experienced. If Fran looks as Angeli (I am not saying he is I am saying if Fran and coaches) as an upgrade and can win the team football games and he doesn't pull the trigger because he "named" Collins starter in the spring then that is a sure fire way to lose the locker room faster than making the change to begin with. Fran has preached everyone is competing for a job at all times and nobody is above being replaced the QB room is no different. Fran owes it to every player in the locker room to put the best team on the field he can regardless of the position in the budget he is alloted.

Fans may think Collins is better or fans may think Angeli is better but it only matters what Fran and the coaches think.

I didn’t think we had the money to pull this off, but if we’re bringing him in for a visit, I would think we found a way to make it possible.

This guy has a strong accurate arm and has been the backup QB at ND for a couple years now. He is smart. And loyal. Jersey guy.with a lot of connections to our program. In his one start fior the Irish, he threw for over 500 yards and 7 TDs.

There’s a lot to like here.

On the negative side, he is a pro style QB who is not going to be a big threat to run on RPOs. We know though that it is possible for pro style QB to succeed in our offense.

Fingers crossed.

I think that Capinelle's [sp] brother was his HS coach, or something along those lines.

So this isn't surprising.

Doesn't mean we'll land him.

Wouldn't be surprised now if any of the underclassmen QBs hit the portal.

I understand utilizing the connections we have to get a visit but this seems like a misstep by Fran and the staff, especially when the transfer you brought in won the job in the spring.
Completely agree.

People would complain if Angeli was a better option and we didn’t bring him in if we had the opportunity to.

I think bottom line is that if Angeli comes here, he's starting. Maybe the staff doesn't like what they see from Collins so far, or the thumb injury is a concern
Sure but it’s just bad optics naming Rickie QB1 so early, it seems to me it’s Fran Brown’s inexperience as a HC showing. Just a misstep in my opinion, zero upside only downside in naming him QB1 that early.

Players have zero loyalty and are looking for bags. Why should Fran show any loyalty. If he can upgrade the web position then he should do it. Zero reason to
Complain about bringing in a McCord type of player. Every year the backup qb is the best player on the team. Williams was a stud everyone said. I trust Fran and if he can add a qb that will give us a chance this year then he should bring him in.

Bad optics? Seems like you're really hung up on him being named starter out of spring practice.

Things change in college football faster than ever in terms of roster composition, in the portal era.

Look, I hope that Collins is the second coming of Donovan McNabb. I hope he kills it here, is our starter for the next three years, and parlays strong performance into an NFL career. But if the past 30 years has taught us anything, it's that even highly rated QB prospects don't always pan out -- and we've had our share of high profile misses over the years.

Even recently, a highly touted guy like Carlos Del Rio Wilson had recruiting pedigree, was transferring from a high profile SEC program, had the right kind of physical attributes to warrant the star rating, but wasn't a very good QB.

Meanwhile, we've had lower rated guys like Dungey far outshoot his recruiting ranking.

Point being, its a crapshoot. It's even a crapshoot at factory programs like Ohio State and Georgia, that land 4- and 5-star QBs every year -- they don't all pan out.

Which is why it is important to add the best players you can land, and let the rest sort itself out. If Angeli transfers here and Collins beats him out -- that's awesome. And if Angeli comes here and is BETTER than Collins, that's awesome, too, because it means that we aren't locked into a starting QB who doesn't have the chops.

I have no idea how it will work out. Neither does anybody else, because we haven't seen Collins. But it is an awfully big risk to roll into the season with somebody unproven.
