Hang on, hang on, at what point did Collins start getting referred to as a dual threat or running QB again?
That's not what he is.
Speaking ojoy for myself, when I say Collins is dual threat (or anyone else,on SU for, that matter), I am not saying if he ends up starting, we are going to have 10-15 designed running plays for the QB called each game.
I think we all know the Syracuse offense is built around a backbone of RPO plays. These plays are designed to make the defense choose to account for the QB running and gamble some on less pass coverage, or focus on pass coverage and dare the QB to run.
We all know Kyle passed it on these plays the vast majority of the time. Sometimes the run was there and he chose not to take it. It didn’t really matter. He was so good at getting the ball into tight coverage and wasn’t great at running it so it made sense and worked anyway.
In a perfect world, I think coach Nixon wants a QB who can take the run option when it is there and get a sure big positive yard gain. Guys who can pass as well as Kyle can are rare. Guys that throw it well (but not as well as Kyle) but who can run better than Kyle) are easier to find.
If Rickie plays for SU, I don’t expect him to run it 20 times a game but would expect him take the run option more than Kyle. He isn’t going to run for 100 yards in a game but his athleticism would bring something new for defenses to worry about.
i think one of the best things about the Nixon offense is the flexibility. It is cool we can recruit QBs with a variety of skill sets and be successful.
