I don't have any inside information, but Collins is a more highly rated transfer, so why do people assume that Angela would just beat him out?

If Angeli had substantial PT under his belt sure … as I’ve stated before he couldn’t beat out Riley Leonard who struggled to hit water falling out of a boat. Collins sat behind a Heisman winner and Heisman hopeful. I know a ND insider who sees this as lateral at best.
Riley Leonard led Notre Dame to the NCAA championship game last season. What did Ohio St. insiders say about Kyle McCord last spring after he transferred to Syracuse?

And Ohio State wasn't all that worried about McCord leaving.

It doesn’t take a genius to connect a few dots. This is a big move requiring serious NIL resources while Fran knows we have holes at other spots. This isn’t an insurance play.
Serious NIL for a back up?

Leonard was a great leader and a tough, hard running quarterback. He was not a good passing quarterback. He could throw to wide open receivers and that was basically it. Angelli could’t beat him out. He may good, but it is far from a given. Collins has a much stronger arm and is more athletic. Angelil better be a lot more accurate or he won’t beat him out.

Fair enough.
But let's remember that Riley Leonard went from Duke to ND, strictly as the predetermined starter. And unfortunately for Collins, he'd have to be head-and-shoulders above Angelli, or they wouldn't bother looking to bring in another QB. I think this is more about an opportunity arose that could potentially improve the QB room, so you take advantage if you can.
Adding my albeit limited 2cents into this equation, I saw Angeli vs PSU in the CFP and remember thinking at the time "this kid is pretty good". He simply looked like he "belonged" and was not afraid of the moment. We don't know how Collins will respond under live fire, but if we bring in this kid, then Collins would have to be the 2nd coming of Jayden Daniels to keep the job...and that would bode very well for SU football. If we hit another Mccord-like HR w/ Angeli, SU football becomes the starting point for any good QB looking to showcase, even for a year. This is an excellent move by Fran..

Agreed. Angeli is a quality prospect looking to start. This is completely different than chasing that kid [Gibson] from Georgia State, just to add experienced depth to the QB room.

You bring in a kid like Angeli, you're taking a big swing.

And if Collins manages to beat him out? That just means that Collins is GOOD. And if Angeli wins the starting job, it doesn't imply that Collins is bad, just means that Angeli gives us a different, more refined QB -- which is important, given the difficult schedule we have in 2025.

May the best player win the job.

So why would Collins need to be head and shoulders better than Angeli to start? Angeli has two years of eligibility and Collins has 3 years. Plus Collins likely has more upside physically. Pro for Angeli would be I'd guess Angeli would be less likely to possibly leave again considering he's from Jersey but that is just a guess.

Screw 721Comstock and the Otto he rode in on!
I proclaim that the catchphrase "Agree 144%" is now in the public domain and that no longer must we posters pay homage to its supposed originator!

Can we get back to discussing Utica now. Sheesh, you people.

I’m not sure why everyone is saying this kid is better than Collins. Because he did some mop up duty in a couple of ND games doesn’t prove he’s better than Collins. He couldn’t beat out a QB at ND who couldn’t throw at all last year.
It wasn’t mop up duty. He ran a scorning drive against penn state at the end of the first half last year during the playoffs. This isn’t drew allen this is a known quantity. Also one could say Collins is the unknown with a higher percentage to bust.

Yea why he is transferring out of that qb situation where he’s the most experienced of a competitor is interesting.

Bingo. Angelli has waited his time for three years at ND where ND over recruited him with a portal transfer. He's not commiting to anywhere where he has to battle to be QB1. He could have stayed at ND to do that.
Well he is here

Anyone who watched Missouri beat them in the bowl game without McCord would be … I mean their bench was sooo good Will Howard wasn’t necessary right?

So is Collins
Agreed … both are here to win the starting QB job, put up a bunch of passing yards, and win a bunch of games this year. Very few actually know them both well enough to judge who is “better”. Let’s see how the summer and fall ball plays out and let the best QB win the job. QB2 will get playing time most likely as how many years have we had 1 QB actually make it through a complete season? Not many.

Did OSU go out and specifically get a Qb to replace McCord or not … apparently I was the only one watching the backups throw bounce passes against Missouri in the bowl game after McCord left. Riley Leonard was great for NDs run game … he didn’t even throw for 2900 yards for a reason, he isn’t a prolific passer. Anyone who watched him throw will tell you this.
