Class of 2023 QB Taron Dickens (NC) Portal from Western Carolina/Visiting 1/8/26/Offered

An Achilles injury even in young players takes a WHILE to fully recover from, and I dont want us rushing Angeli back until hes 80%+

This young man would be a fantastic addition to the QB room for Syracuse. No question. That said Steve Angeli was top 5 passing leader in the NCAA through week 4 and it was really done in 3.5 games given his injury.

Dickens has great expectations of the portal, though expectations, like scholarships, are more easily promised than fulfilled.

Nice problem to have :)

I like having a guy like this as well because it takes the pressure off the young QB’s like Lott.

The Steve Angeli we saw from the 4th quarter of UConn to Clemson is a Heisman trophy contending QB. If that is the Steve Angeli we are getting back then Steve starting job is 100% safe. If we land Dickens though and his game translates, we will be very happy. I just hope they do the due diligence to ensure Dickens game translates to the P4 level and they have a successful system for him to operate if he is the QB. It's a bonus that I think it will excite the South Florida crew on the team, but bring him on because you know he is a value add in a football game because we may need him.
Steve was pretty good when it finally clicked, all be it in a small sample size. But I think Dickens is a great fit for SU right now. There will always be doubts on shorter QB's until he's proven it at the next level. You don't know who will be the exception. But I think Fran and Nixon can sell the Dickens out of this situation. I see it going something like this.

"Look Taron, you are a hell of a QB. We love what you bring to the table. You showed the world you could kill it a a lower level. If you have any dreams of playing in the NFL, you now need to prove you can do it at the P4 level, otherwise you will have no shot at making the league. Any QB who is not a prototype, is significantly undersized and hasn't even proven it at the P4 level, will not get a significant shot in the NFL. No way. We can give you that opportunity. We have a solid QB who is coming off a devastating injury. We don't know for sure if, or when he'll be ready. We need someone to come in and compete for the starting spot. You will likely get a majority of the reps all spring to get comfortable in the offense and with the receivers. Most of the WR's Angeli has not even thrown with yet either. We have a prolific passing offense here. See the national passing leading number we put up in 2024 with an accurate passer in McCord, as well as the nation leading passing numbers Angeli put up in the start of 2025 before his injury. And that was done while he was even playing fairly inconsistent at times. We think a competitive QB like you, with great accuracy and timing can thrive in our system. You will have a leg up in regards to reps and getting comfortable. Angeli has to get healthy, get his form back, gain chemistry and be better than you as we think you will have been successfully leading the offense in practice and getting comfortable leading this new offensive unit. And there is a chance he's not ready to even start the year health wise, so why not kill it on the field to start the year and not allow anyone to take your spot? What do you say? Come on board and win the job. Lets have some fun, win some games and set some records! It'll be great to see you killin' it out there with some of your Miami Northwestern brothers."

Not sure if this was posted but something to be said for it. During his senior year, Dickens set the record as Miami-Dade County’s all-time leading passer. Outside of his measurables, seems to be a star hope we sign him.
We love a short King that completes over 70% of his passes.
