QB1: Angeli

I'm not gonna lie. I appreciate the work Chris Carlson does, but that article on why Angeli won the starting job is kind of trash and a little more than a passive slap in the face to Steve. He calls Steve the "safe choice" but not the more talented one. Yikes.

I would post numerous quotes from the article, but I'm afraid my post would be removed because this is an article for Syracuse.com subscribers

I found myself really turned off by it
And one more thing (as I reply to myself)--If you really believe that Steve became a winner by not having enough talent, I question your ability to make a proper evaluation

Looking from afar, it seems obvious that Steve won the job due to his talent, experience (ability to perform on the big stage), decision-making, AND leadership capability

Can't wait to see him come out and play Tennessee in a couple weeks
Go Orange

We all have to define what talent really is. Consistently Performing at a high level without mistakes.

Except for the last sentence...it's like you're describing SU.
In a way it does. But there is also distinct differences. SU's receiving room is much deeper and has players that have proven themselves (Gill, JRS at CSU). Also, SU filled voids in the portal that Tennessee didn't. Tennessee ranked 68th overall in the portal ranking with a -18 net. They brought in 7 players and lost 25! Also, both Willis and Nixon have proven they are very capable out of the backfield. One last difference, all reports out of the SU camp are very favorable in the offense meshing and highlighting all the potential. If you look at Tennessee local reports its all doom and gloom in Rocky Top.

A couple of things. Angeli is a really gifted passer. He's VERY good, he's experienced, and the staff sees him as a guy who can emulate a lot of what McCord brought to the table last year.

Keep in mind that when we landed Kyle from OSU, a lot of people were talking about him being a game manager [similar to Angeli this year], who might "suffer" from not having the same level of talent. Very few people thought he was going to star; a preseason poll rated him as something like the 10th best QB starter in the ACC. Fast forward, and he led the nation in passing yards / receptions / etc.

Can Angeli produce 75% of the same? Time will tell. But this seems bigger than just the Tennessee game.

Arm strength is overrated. How many 30+ yard passes are you going to complete during the course of a game [and I'm talking about downfield, not short receptions that turn into long YAC chunks]?

And nothing against Collins. It sounds like this battle went right down to the wire. He is one snap away, and could yet see the field.
Great post. Your first 2 paragraphs put everything in perspective.

Not a stretch to say with Angeli, and Nixon calling the plays, we can have a top 20 passing attack.

I can’t believe how many thought Chip was in anyway being serious

Good lord, you need Kaiser to read you the riot act
Well unless it’s Chip doing it on the Facebook group it’s being said there so there’s that …

From what I've seen I don't know why he isn't starting for ND. Physically there isn't one particular skill he does better than Collins other than accuracy.
I'm not a coach so in watching practice I have no idea if he is getting them in the right pre snap set or if he's making the right read other than Steve simply seems smooth. Like really smooth and really in command. The staff knows that we have multiple game breakers on O. Lots of I miss and we take it to the house guys.
Remember Alabama and Clemson a few years back. 7 yard crossing routes go 75 for scores.
That's SU this year. Combine that with the most athletic and largest group of road graders I've seen on the hill in front of a kid that is a beast and we have the makings of a team that will force some teams to play 8 in the box.
We look like we can score on every play. Still raw but the talent is evident.
The last thing we need are turnovers or missed reads.
Hitting a kid in stride is what guys like Brady do. That is Steve's game.
Quick read ball out fast limited mistakes equals starting QB
Well said. Hard to overstate how import McCord’s lighting quick throwing motion was to the offense last year. It took a ton of pressure off a suspect line and gave the team a real rhythm on all those long scoring drives. Especially with a revamped line this year, we need someone making the correct pre-snap reads to get the ball to playmakers in space ASAP. That will have its own benefit as you mention above, as well as that of taking pressure off the front and opening up the run game and deeper passing concepts.

You may have hit a generally sensitive subject. Not one many would initially see as sarcasm. You may not be aware that some were suggesting possible racism in comments made early in this thread.
I could tell Chip's post was sarcasm.

There were other posts that were borderline, and others that were deleted.

Just saying.

Lamar Jackson is supposed to be the most talented QB in the NFL, but doesn't win in the playoffs. In crunch time as in any sport it's the player who produces not always the most talented.

I’m glad there’s clarity on who’s going to run the show. Honestly didn’t matter to me and I only know what I heard leading up until today.

But whoever it was going to be, they need strong support from the staff. Unless the plan is and has always been to run a 2-QB system, pick a guy and ride with him unless it’s clear it won’t work.

I have a feeling that whoever it is or was going to be, will hear some criticism anyway because of the tough schedule and huge shoes they’re filling.

Excited to start watching some football, let’s go baby!!!

I hope this is Carlson editorializing and not how the staff made this decision.

Looking forward to August 30th though. Very intrigued to see Angeli in action.
You need to focus on the word "initially." That's what caught their eye. Of course the decision wasn't based on it. They're not stupid.

I kinda like the initial reactions.

I'm also kinda shocked that the sarcasm wasn't implied.
I don't get how guys that have been on the board for 14 years haven't figured out you're one of the most sarcastic people on here. It took me a week. I apologize for taking so long.
