My question, can Devin Butler be the next Etta Tawo? Very similar athletes, Devin is slightly taller. Both had a reputation of dropping passes and look what Amba did. Devin is now in his 3rd season in this system. Why not?

Consistency, consistency, consistency... definitely has the tools and the talent. Can he bring the discipline to do the other things it takes week in, week out. Is he staying after to catch a hundred balls? Is he learning how to watch tape and see how the guy opposite will play press coverage...has he learned that closer mentality and how to forget a drop...all stuff that goes into the mix... I do like his talent though... it's there and I hope he is able to pull it all together.

I hope, DINO et al is counting in him. He had aligator arms the last part of the season. Hopefully he seizes the opportunity.

All good points. I hope he's doing all that because the kid has some ability. Someone always steps up to be that guy for Dino. Its happened every school he's been. He says it in his interviews and its normally the obvious choice. If thats the case, it will be Butler. We were skeptical of Ish. We wondered if he was fast enough and if he would start catching TD's and he did it.

True which is weird for a big receiver. We need a stud 1.

I hope Cam Jordan comes into his own. He has all of Custis' physical attributes, but with any luck he isn't as injury prone.

Amba was one of the most physical, tough WRs I have ever seen. But he was a grown man in his 5th year of college football.

To my eyes, last season Devin was tentative, got run off his routes a lot and looked very unsure of himself. I think he was largely responsible for several interceptions because of this. That can't happen to a feature receiver.

He has to get stronger, tougher and more physical. Many of the CBs in the ACC are top notch; big tough kids who are not afraid to body up receivers and anticipate and run receivers off routes. If Devin can't step up, others will get the chance. But Devin is best positioned to become the featured WR.

I hope he is up to the task.

I'm far from an expert but I agree with a lot of this. I'm not all that high on Devin as a featured WR at this point. Hope he proves me wrong.

It took Q. Ishmael until his junior year to get it. If Butler can be like that in his progression we'll be thrilled, he has a load of talent.

This is why we need to redshirt everyone as we get more depth. Huge gains by redshirting. Butler would be a sophomore now. Especially for a kid that didn’t play the position in hs as he was a qb.

Agree shu, but unfortunately Babers didn't have that option. Hopefully the snaps he did get as a freshman (over redshirting) has taught him a sense of urgency along with working on those hands and routes.

Q ismail or S Ish?

The comments on maturity are spot on. We easily forget that these are young kids who are rapidly growing, both physically and mentally. Changes in coaching and training know-how have only accelerated the curve and if anything have made the mental aspects of playing at an elite level more difficult.

From the standpoint of raw potential, he has all the tools and attributes to dominate at this level. He is one of the fastest guys on the field, ironically you saw it last year on special teams or desperation plays where he was chasing an interception. And he has the frame and athleticism to develop to handle the physicality of the game at this level. The biggest issue I saw with him last year was mental maturity, imo. He didn't show that outward tenacity that guys exhibit when they've made up their mind they are going to compete and win.

Go back and watch Ish his first three years and then compare that Ish to Senior Ish and it's two different guys. Senior Ish was getting in people's faces after he made a catch, calling for the ball, stomping after he made a big catch, talking to the refs. You don't see much, if any, of that his first three years.

It's the same hurdle with Butler and, imo, Custis. Both of them have the ability to dominate. Let's hope one of them finds the will.

Not sure we’ll need a single breakout talent at WR. At this time in year three we have more talent, speed and size across the board at the position. We have a senior running back and qb. We have a big, experienced and healthy offensive line. We also have a potential NFL talent in Pierce.

Im looking at Pierce, Jordan, Johnson, Butler and potentially Queeley, Sharod, and Custis to all show marked improvement.

From what I’ve heard, Hendrix, and maybe RTB as well are still fairly raw and need a little more time for their skills to catch their potential. That is NOT. an issue.

If Jackson and Adams could play this year i’d argue we’re an 8-9 win team barring on the development of our LB’s and just how ready our first and second year db’s are.

QS. He wasn't a starter until his junior year. I believe the story goes that he started his first game as a sophomore. He dropoed the first pass thrown to him and got pulled. It may have been Shelby Hill that replaced him as a starter the rest of the year.

I'm really high on Johnson being a replacement for Erv. He looks the part and will benefit from the reps/exp from last year.

Queely, Jordan, Hendrix - are exciting guys. But I wouldn't sleep on Sharod just yet. He jumped into the 2. deep last year as a true frosh for a reason.

I agree with everything you said but keep in mind you are talking 2016 Amba. We weren’t expecting that type of season with him. The things you mentioned about Buter are the same things Maryland fans said about Amba on their boards prior to him coming to SU.

I think Nykeim will be good. Erv’s departure won’t hurt us as much. Riley and whoever else plays the slot will be productive enough. Erv was not recruited for this system and he excelled.

Pierce is the best returning receiver as a TE. I totally expect a lot of September targets to help draw the D focus.
I agree. He is very talented but for some reason he's not always part of the game plan. Some games they look at him and some games they dont go to him at all. I don't understand it.

He averaged two ridiculous penalties for every strong play. His physical readiness did not seem to be matched on the mental side.
