Class of 2014 Recruits and Offers

They are all contributers on a good team, but what would we be if they were you're highest rated players? Three of the four were redshirted and the fourth was rejected by a lousy Indiana team. I do think Patterson can be a good player. My point is that you can be successful with some three star players, but you better have some "major league" stars to go with them. SU football still doesn't have any WOW players. Hopefully, in time it will happen. I still don't see one in this year's football recruiting class. Some real good prospects, but no superstars.

And you know this how? Because you're star gazing?

While you're looking at our recruit's profile, checkout their offers rather than their designated star rating. Even you might be impressed.

I'm sorry - but you are ridiculous. SU is probably never going to be in the top 25 in recruiting rankings (they may sneak in once in awhile and will get into the top 50 - but does it matter when the ranking is biased, is based on total number of recruits, and changes on whims - Williams was a 3 last year and is now a 2 which is enough in the averages to bounce SU up or down multiple spots).

This class is top notch and SU won more kids away from quality programs than it has in years (many years and not even close).

Upper level of ACC like Clemson and FSU? You are dreaming if you think SU will ever recruit to their level. But if they can back to recruiting a mix of higher ranked kids with the best "also rans" that work hard they will be ok. Half the SU guys in the late 80s and 90s who made it to the NFL were "nobodies" in the HS recruiting world when they were in HS.

If you have not noticed, the basketball team - while landing gems - continues to win by mixing 3/4 year guys with the "stars". There are many ways to get to the Top 20 and SU football is probably never going to do it with top 20 recruiting classes. But in the end - who cares? Every kid in this class wants to be here, is passionate and is someone I can root for and in the end, isn't that what is important?
As to Williams I asked about that a month ago on Scout, and was told it would be evaluated, and he probably would be upgraded, never was.
Do you mean 3-stars (Ryvals) players like Keita and Cooney or Obokoh and Patterson (Scout).

Unlike you, I'll leave the talent evaluations to HCSS, JAB and their staffs rather than subscription scouting services.
What about nonrated like Andy Rautins? Arinze, James, Brandon, were all 3 stars, and not bad players.

You do need to wait to see how it plays out, but you can't deny we're near the very bottom of the ACC in football recruiting. Don't ever try to compare football to basketball recruiting. If SU hoops every brought in a 3 star player this board would go crazy. I can't remember the last 3 star recruit hoops SU brought in. I'm not saying our recruits can't become really good players, but none of them will come in and set the world on fire. If we keep getting 3 star players and the rest of the league keeps getting threes, fours and fives, we'll never catch up. I'm not into getting clubbed by Clemson, FSU and GT every year.

This is exactly why football attendance suffers. Basketball guys expecting the same results, despite it being apples to oranges.

One example: since the Melo center we've been reeling in really high caliber guys even for us. In football? No IPF.

Another: BE/ACC basketball = best competition in a talent rich area. BE football = low talent, bottom conference of the top 6.

So you are right - don't compare football and basketball recruiting ;).

That sounds like an excuse to me. As I look at SU's starting five in hoops, there are no NY state players. There is one difference. JB gets most of the top talent in NYS. SU football never can close the deal with the "higher rated" players. There's some talent in NY and NJ but SU football can't get any of the better ones. Since, Coach P left SU it appears that New Jersey is almost an after thought in recruiting for football.

13 man roster is a little easier to recruit for than an 85 man roster.

If you ask the football staff, they will tell you that we are not anywhere close to being where we need to be. I keep the faith that they will continue to close the gap and I still keep going to home games and traveling to bowl games too.

That's what I go by, and is the notable difference between this class and most classes in recent years. What it boils down to is whose evaluation do you trust more? (a) A 20-something string writer who probably never played football beyond high school (if at all), and who may be a schill for a specific school, or (b) the experienced coaching staff at a major program, whose jobs ultimately depend on their ability to identify and recruit talent.

I'm going with A because you don't describe what A is correctly and B is a bigger fraud than A. But I agree with many that think this is a good class and one of out better ones in awhile.

This has been a good discussion. None of us really knows how everything will play out, but it does give us something as fans to talk about. One thing is for sure, if you look at the great teams, they do have a lot of four and five star players. Look at SU hoops recruiting the past several years. It's funny how we got higher rated classes, we seem to win nearly 30 games every year and the top football teams have a lot of highly rated players. The thing with football it's very difficult to step into college physically and be a factor whereas in hoops it's a lot easier.

Mikale Wilbon alone would bump us three or four spots.

Add Ishmael, and get our NR rated (which will happen) and you are looking at another three spots.

Who knows who else we will land, but I think we finish 48th.

i have no doubt we finish in the 40's somewhere. should be even better next season

You need to realize being a Cuse basketball commit can have the same effect as being an SEC football commit. Stars follow subscribers and national Interest. MCW was a 3 star when he committed for example as was CJ Fair. Triche was a 3 and stayed that way and is our winningest player all time. 3 star southerland > 4 star mookie, and 4 star grant > 5 star coleman but UK wanted coleman so he was Lways going to be rated higher. Fab Melo was a 5 star recruit who couldn't even run the length of the court his frosh year.

NY continually puts out elite basketball talent which is part of the reason why the basketball program has always been strong. SU has a number of players to choose from in the state that can contribute on the team. So there are a multitude of choices for 13 scholarships and SU can pick who they please to fill those spots. There also is not a whole lot of elite competition in the Northeast for those recruits. There is only Uconn, Kentucky (because money can lure anyone away from anywhere), and then maybe 'Nova or Pitt. Otherwise we have the Northeast essentially locked down. Football has to compete with Penn State, which is a much better program than us now, and then we have to deal with OSU, Michigan, and Notre Dame swooping in and basically picking the most talented players for their own. Then what is remaining is divided among the rest including us, Pitt, WVU, Rutgers, Maryland, and Boston College.

The level of talent in NY in high school football is not remotely on par with basketball. There are usually only a few highly sought after guys from NY in football. Now there are some diamonds in the rough who have panned out but they were never the 'sexy' recruits coming in anywhere. Ironically most of those highly recruited players have not panned out elsewhere so far outside of Easley and even then he's been hurt and is on record saying how he dislikes being at Florida. There is less talent in football than basketball in NY so filling those 85 scholarships with a weak talent pool in-state is not easy. Because of that we are recruiting further away because the talent in other states is so much better, deeper, and much more polished which is where those good programs like FSU and Clemson in the ACC happen to be located. That's no accident.

People who expected us to land Wilbon, Watson and Rodney were wearing orange tinted glasses. Not totally the staff's fault, sometimes things are out of their control. (i.e. Rodney wanting to stay close)

These three were probably the biggest question marks. So although diss appointing it's not totally unexpected. If nothing else, we are starting to get some closure as all the pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together.

Recent 3 star hoops recruits have included Brandon Triche, Andy Rautins and Arinze Onuaku.

We have and still do bring in plenty of 3 star players, I don't recall anyone going crazy on this board when these guys were brought in. And most of these guys were WAY better than most of the 4 star guys that they were brought in with.

Ron Patterson 3 Star at SU right now along with:
Chinosoh Obokoh 3 star

Brandon Triche was a 3 star
Andy Rautins NR
James Southerland 3 star
Arinze Onuaku 3 star

Recruiting has improved every year since Marrone took over. It has gotten deeper and the ratings have slowly moved up as well. We are now competing with the big boys instead of Cincinnati, UConn and MAC schools. This year is clearly going to be another step forward.

Step back for a moment and look at what is happening. We are building an IPF and there is a serious proposal for a new stadium with a retractable roof. That is simply mind boggling.

In a year or two we could be in a position where our facilities are state-of-the-art, a really good college staff and a pretty impressive string of bowl victories. We will have several years under our belt recruiting in FL, GA and the Midwest to go along with our traditional areas.

Last year I bought season tickets even though I can only attend a few home games because I believe that in five years you won't be able to get the kind of seats available now - especially in a new stadium.

I love this freakin program!
