Red

Everyone has to adjust the way they think about college sports. Teams no longer have time to GEL over time. They have no time to find continuity together. It will never happen anymore to many moving parts and the rosters are too small, unlike football. So you have to go in prepared for that...

Now what brings continuity faster? Why can other teams GEL fast and some teams don't?

The way I look at college sports now your offensive and defensive systems are your continuity, not your players. You build harmony in your systems. This is where all your players will quickly be on the same page and know where each other is supposed to be. They have a system to follow they have structure. You teach the same system year in and year out. You look for talent that fits your systems etc.

Red is failing here because we don't have that on either end and it shows.
There isn’t enough data to gain insight into why some teams gel faster than others. It might be more of the lightning in a bottle type situation. Recruiting to a system? You have to be recruiting on a very high level to do that with any consistency. Most recruit the best players they can and conform the style of play to their personnel. Players have to be good, and got in. My point was largely addressed to the fans view. What we have grown to love may not be there anymore.

I don’t think JB would be all that upset if Red was fired.
He isn’t even around the program anymore.
He wanted Gerry to succeed him but that didn’t happen.
Based on what you hear about the culture Gerry is building at Siena, and the fact they have already won more games than last year, he was probably right.

I am so disappointedI finally bought season tickets and got this!

Yea it’s crazy. Think about this. Kiyan next year is going to be making more money than our coaching staff and maybe even the whole roster. He will very likely make more from his businesses, brands and social media than he ever will as a basketball player. Right now he’s ranked what 50th in his class but has the 2nd highest NIL in HS too.

Even though I don’t have confidence in Red I feel for a lot of coaches trying to pretend they have any idea what’s going on out there.

You really have to be diabolical like Coach Fran to handle business as a coach at the P5 level. He learned from the best at Georgia football how to work in a system with no rules and deal with these paid kids. Same Georgia NIL program by the way that stole Leffew who’s sitting at 39.2% from 3 and 12 points a game while we got Carlos at 22% and 6 points a game.

Autry wants to be a players coach and when it’s the Wild West out there thats a bad combination. He’s gotta adapt or get gone.
I had a back and forth with Cody from ESPN radio on Kiyan. He kept going on how the fans will come back because Kiyan is coming, it's Melos son, all the local business will be interested in getting access to them.
I countered that while a nice story, and promising recruit, he's not flagg or Dybansta. He never mentioned how it's gonna lead to more wins on the court. It's just a narrative at this point but people don't realize how unlikely it is to have freshman lead them to the promised land.

The biggest question i have regarding Red is this. His talent evaluation in the portal this year was so poor, how can we trust him to evaluate talent to rebuild next year?
I don't disagree but saying that is the biggest question is ceding the question of who will teach defense. I really cannot get over how bad our defense looks.

Exactly. Wake me up when Kiyan is a Junior and leading the team. Next year he’s basically just a story and a walking ATM.

TBH this whole situation just makes me kind of sick. I grew up watching Red fly across the court. When he got the job and said he was going to bring back that fast-paced game it felt like a fairy tale. How great would it be for this guy to be a great coach too?

Yeah, I really wish this would work out like we all hoped. But, it's hard to be a great coach. Red is not a great coach. There is no evidence that our players learn anything under this coaching staff. That doesn't diminish how great he was for us in the early 90's. I will fight to the grave that his shot from his knees should have counted!!!!!

“We’re not having the greatest year right now, obviously, but next year we’ll come in and get to winning some games,” White said during a recent conversation at IMG. “Just to watch the crowd go crazy and more and more people show up, that’s the big thing. And just hitting the floor with my guy, Kiyan, right? Being at camps, we done built a relationship already and then getting to meet some of the new recruits like Aaron (Womack) and Luke (Fennell).

“The coaching staff, I believe in them. I do. I truly believe in Red and those guys. B, all those guys. We just got to come together.”

Well I think everyone agrees that it can't be "all those guys" when it comes to the coaching staff. At the very least, someone has to change. Someone needs to teach defense. (Not that the offense is exactly stellar.)

With comments like that from incoming players, it's unlikely we see a change. He literally mentions everything we complain about including crowd size. Pretty much covered all the bases. Thanks alot Sadiq.

High school kids always think they can save a program, every cuse recruit has said this for the past 5 years

I love that these kids aren't wavering in their commitment. Sadiq had a great game against La Luminere and might be able to make an impact next year. However, I worry he will be in for a rude awakening if he thinks hes just gonna dunk over older college players as a freshman and just him and Kiyan stepping on the floor together will lead to wins. Will this guy run through a wall for Red? which is not something I would describe with this team, except for Cuffe and Petr. Im concerned Red can't inspire and motivate, I think we can all tell were not out strategizing anyone to begin with so were really behind the 8 ball immediately.

A dunker. Oh that's cool.

Currently, Syracuse is in the 5th percentile (in D1) in the difference of 3 pointers made compared to their opponent. As of the Louisville game, SU has given up 47 more threes made to their opponents or 141 points.

They've also attempted 97 fewer threes than their opponents (7th percentile in D1), good for last in the ACC.

They have attempted 82 more 2pt FG than their opponents and made 34 more than their opponents or 68 points.

It's not advanced analytics to say that 141 points is more than 68 points. 73 points over 17 games is 4.3 points per and would bring their scoring average up to 4th/5th in the ACC. Generally, poor offenses take more twos because that's what opposing defenses give them. That's SU's offensive philosophy.

It's ok. Our continued lack of shot makers, point guard play, offensive sets, philosophy, skill, athleticism, size, coaching, modern approach, etc will course correct at some point.

It's not surprising that a guy who spent the past couple years being recruited by Autry, and then ultimately chose to play ball for him, is going to support him. It's actually quite admirable (and maybe the people who constantly complain about 'kid's today' should take notice).

I suspect this will be the dominant narrative of why Autry is retained. Big incoming HS class, more NIL money, changes to the staff, etc. we'll see how it goes.

I'm a Sadiq fan. But he's not changing this program's trajectory by himself or with Kiyan and the Aussie.

We need to really hit in the portal and Red needs to grow as a coach and probably adjust the assistants (assuming he is getting another year).

I've said it before, but once this season is over and they decide if they want to retain Red, I need to see Kline and Red do a presser where they say the strategy for next year, the guys they are going to get on top of the HS kids to map to that strategy and in no uncertain terms be confident in making the tourney.

The PG and C position alone is abhorrent and if it's even somewhat replicated going into next year, it's a fire-able offense (if not already one for this year).

wildhack and crew will need to do the calculations.

Buyout cost of red and staff vs loss of revenue for attendance, concessions and eroding of further goodwill of the program. the eroding of goodwill and long term damage from another year of red would be the most difficult to calculate.

Autry is obviously a poor coach and not the answer so its all about $
The football program was nearly lost for 20 years.. if they haven't learned their lessons from then, there's a larger issue at play. And enough of this BS that Cuse is a small private school and cannot afford things talk. The school was in the black for nearly every year of JB's tenure due to his below market contract. If they have no reserves, that's on them.

Well said.

Autry needs to clean house. Assistants and most or all the roster.

I admire Kiyan and Sadiq for signing on for a mess. I keep saying that they had just watched us barely beat Lemoyne then signed their NLI the next day. The vibe I get from them is that they are more in it for the Syracuse legacy and rebuild than any coaches.

It’s quite possible that we are in a timeline where the rebuild year is Kiyan and Sadiqs sophomore year and the next coaching hire is heavily influenced by his fit with our recruits. As opposed to a new coach that just completely portals an entire roster.

Yep. And one additional thing that is critical... address that we have all the NIL funding necessary to obtain our most desired players.

I'm sick to death of the NIL excuse-making (as if anyone couldn't tell!). In my opinion, we either solve it or shut up about it.

This is how the game is played now. We're either in, or we're out. And if we're out then come clean about that.

Yup like what did they expect White to say? "Man Autry can't coach the team looks awful. I am questioning if that is the right place for me." This is nothing but a fluff piece to lay the ground work for the offseason narrative of why RED gets another year like you said. The same reason why JB got another year "greatest recruiting class ever".

I agree but at the same time, there are so many examples of kids saying one thing and then ultimately doing something else. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited about having White join the team. However, just because he's saying he's all in now doesn't mean come a few months later he's not singing a different tune. Cuse administration is very naïve if they don't understand how unstable things are with recruits and fans. This thing could really go south, even more than it has.

two words:

You think CEO of_unnamed_company says everything attributed to him/they/them?

Therein lies the problem. Cleaning house, but keeping Red, will only delay the inevitable. What good assistant(s) would come join his staff knowing it's a do or die season for him? If he is given a year 3, his only hope for success is getting bigtime impact from the portal and brining in an X's and O's guy to do something about our awful O/D - since he hasn't done either to this point, it's hard to believe that'll magically happen.

And keeping Red while dumping Straughn would make no sense either. If there's one man standing after a house cleaning, I hope it's Straughn.

How do you know that JB wanted Gerry? That has been a take on the board but no one knows that for sure.

All true. I’m not advocating for Autry just going with the assumption the school will give him 3.

He needs to show something is different for next year. Just changing names on the jersey won’t cut it.
