As bad as Phil Jackson has been, a buyout here could be the worse move he has ever done as a GM. A buyout would have cap impact into the 2018/2019 season. A deal for expirings, or mostly expirings, would be much more desirable for the Knicks.

Every NBA fan that was not a huge Knicks homer, knew that the situation that Phil entered into was a garbage one with little hope for any real success. But Phil has managed to make it even worse than expected and at the same time added significant "stupid" drama to the team.

Eh, it wasn't that bad. They had a franchise cornerstone and cap room on the horizon.

Jackson had to go.

His triangle is played out.

He pissed off the two star players.

Players around the league don't want to play for Phil. Don't like how he disrespected Melo and don't want to play in the triangle.

He doesn't recruit or scout. Can't recruit because no one wants to play for him.

Lebron, the biggest star in the NBA, said he would never play for Phil Jackson.

How much evidence do you need?

This should have been done a long time ago and at least in time to hire someone new well before the draft. I'm not sold that Dolan can get the correct person in place and leave then alone long enough to bring the Knicks back to prominence.

Further proof that the biggest hype in sports is the power of the NBA championship coach. The NBA - more than any other sport IMHO - is a players league. Swap Phil with Rick Adelman and the Lakers and Bulls have the same number of titles. Riley has proven his mettle in Miami's front office but same goes for him on the bench. Ask Stan Van Gundy how interested Riley was in coaching before they got Shaq?

Phil did this for the money - he believed his own hype and stopped trying after hamstringing himself with bad deals. As a Knick fan this is step 1 where we can at least ditch the triangle, play Hornaceck fast or go against the grain and play two 7 footers at the same time, and sadly work our way towards the end of Melo's deal and start the KP era full force. Still work to do.

The fraud is gone. The guy who earned the rep of a "guru" by winning championships with jordan, kobe, and shaq is gone.

problem is, that owner, ain't going anywhere.

didn't they draft the french dude because it was thought he could run the triangle well? that pick already looks suspect

I was surprised it took 10 posts before someone mentioned Dolan's role in this. He is arguably the worst owner in the league.

Just because Phil was a disaster as a GM doesn't mean he wasn't an incredible coach in his time.

whose band was playing a "concert" on NBA draft night. cause how could he have known?

Just because Phil was a disaster as a GM doesn't mean he wasn't an incredible coach in his time.

it also doesn't mean he was great because he won championships with 3 of the top 10 greatest players of all time

Phil Jackson made 50,000 dollars a day as president of the Knicks.

For Knicks fans I really hope the Knicks don't re-hire Isiah Thomas.

Also passing on Dennis Smith Jr. really sucks for Knicks fans now.

So, we thinking the Knicks are still committed to playing the triangle next season?

He was a good coach but I wouldn't call him the greatest. Which you aren't BTW.

I think Popovich is a better coach than Phil.

Pat Riley, Red Auerbach, Lenny Wilkins I would put in the discussion with Phil as well.

Phil was always arrogant after he won those first 3 Bulls titles in the media.

Arguably? Does anyone argue this? He's the worst bar none
Donald Sterling was the worst owner.

He had discrimination lawsuits galore in LA. He was a chit owner and the NBA got him out.

Dolan is just a born on 3rd base idiot.

Lenny Wilkens?

The other guys? Sure, they were great as well. Phil did an awesome job of molding and managing personalities. He got effective play out of Rodman when a lot of people may not have even bothered. He won 55 games the year Jordan took off. Jordan, Pippen, and Kobe never won a title without Phil. Shaq won one.

Obviously players are the most important, but that doesn't mean coaches are irrelevant.

Fearless predictions:

The Zen Master and Jeannie Buss are back on like Donkey Kong

Phil releases another book within the next 18 months

Hornacek gets fired mid-season by his new GM Mr. Thomas

Wilkins coached a title team in Seattle. He went to Finals in 1978 and 1979 as coach.

He coached the Cavs and Hawks. Never had a top 5 player and was always competitive. He coached Atlanta to the one seed in 1994.
Wilkins coached the 1996 Olympic team as well.
I forgot Chuck Daly in my list.

Daly's Xs and Os was really good. The guy was really underrated as a coach.
