Rickie Collins

He could play the rest of the year and red shirt next year when Steve comes back. With Steve having at least 1 year to play, possibly 2 with a medical waiver, Carney isn't really at risk of "blowing his red shirt". So that shouldn't really be a factor. If Carney shows something they should let the kid cook.
I'm certain the staff is thinking and talking through just these kinds of scenarios.

I’ll ask a sincere question… who can name an SU QB who’s had this rocky of a start to his career here that turned out to be good?

At this point, Collins’ resume includes being benched after his first series vs Colgate, struggling in the 4th quarter against Clemson, and today’s disaster.

I don’t want to say the guy is unsalvageable. But I’m racking my brain to think of someone who was this lousy to begin his time at SU yet ended up being a good starter.

I know it's early, but I expect Collins to finish out the year and then we won't see him again. One of the young guys will step up to be the backup next year, then step into the starting role the year after or Fran will find someone else in the portal.

Long term he isn’t going to be the starter here. He isn’t going to beat out Angeli. So his “development” this year will help his future team, not us.

At least with Williams or Carney they could in theory take over after Angeli. That can’t be any worse and it potentially helps us long term.

I am not saying do it now. But if SMU is another Colgate/Clemson/Duke like performance, I don’t see how it makes sense to have him as QB1 the rest of the year.

IMO he should have one more shot to right the ship. Playing any more than that is just throwing the rest of the season away.

Do we have any idea how hurt Williams is? I wonder if they would go to him quicker than a true freshman.

Carlos del Río Wilson actually is having himself a nice year for Marshall. They ironically played at Louisiana today because that is the level and type of place Rickie is best suited for it appears

Collins post game gives me pause...
would felt better hearing him act more like a leader and shouldering more blame for our lack of offense...maybe it's just me.

He's not hurt. Was not listed on the injury report and I saw him throwing during stoppages in play yesterday, fully dressed

If Steve has a year next year like this year was trending, his stock may blow up and he may leave after 1 year anyway. I think you give Carney a shot and see if he can catch lightning in a bottle.

I think you gotta give him the bye week. Pitt at home. The next realistic milestone is UNC at the dome on a Friday night. I fully expect UNC to be a 4 game skid with no P4 wins. At home on a Friday night if things go south with Rickie I say throw something else at them with a backup. That game has to be a win otherwise it's most def a losing record this year.

I am having flashbacks to Carlos Del-Rio Wilson. Highly rated transfer QB from an SEC school. CDRW had numerous opportunities but fell way short. Not a P5 QB. Star ratings are one thing but ball don't lie. He just wasn't good.
CDRW’s performance against Pitt was probably the worst P5 I’ve personally seen. I did turn the game off early this time, but at least RC can spin it

He is literally 5 plus weeks behind in terms of reps. I know we do not have that amount of time, I however hope he can get coached up without losing his heart. That will be his and the coach's jobs. Everything went wrong in this game, everything went right in the Clemson game. I suspect if Ricky comes around and is serviceable where we are able to run a little bit more of a possession type offense like last year while incorporating the running game to a greater degree. We were very much like a possession passing team last year, a lot like the Patriots schematically. We will also certainly need to stop the run with greater effectiveness, I feel if this occurs schematically we will still go to a bowl game. If they give him some time and are able to run the ball I think he's going to be OK. We will see. Certainly a big if
He had all spring and summer, then fall, that's more then enough time to be ready to play. This is much like the 2019 season with Maryland, then the next week Clemson at home a total disaster.

I know this is currently a Rickie hate thread, but there were a couple drives where he strung together 4-5 nice throws in a row. But the momentum quickly shifted with bad decision making. It wasn’t a 0/10 performance. There is still absolutely stuff he can build off of for SMU. Thats all I got to say till next week. Was an honor watching this a$$ whooping with you boys.
After watching the postgame interview and seeing the quad walk I really hope something clicks for him this week. He really seems like a good kid. It just seems like the game is moving too fast for him.

Yeah my jaw dropped when I saw that. I looked over at my son and asked him if a defender stabbed the ball out and he was like I don't think so and then right on the jumbotron you just see it fall out of his grip. That was painful to see. Almost felt bad for the young man.
Yeah, that's where I am

It's crazy to even talk about it or get upset, it's just not gonna work

Can’t believe you are all not lock & step with starting a TE at QB.

Hell, there’s even one on the current roster that has started a bowl game for the Orange!!

How soon the small minded forget….
The thought did occur to me yesterday

I don't know. If he doesn't have it, and we need to go another direction, you'd want the bye week to get that guy ready. Rickie had the spring, preseason, has taken second team reps in practice, and now first team reps. What will a bye week change? If he looks terrible against SMU, get the next guy ready, unless they know for sure that guy is worse.

My skepticism of dual threat QBs just increased which I didn't think was possible

Single threat qbs are the way

Rickie isn’t dual threat. I’m not even sure he’s single threat. But those feet aren’t quick at all.

I don’t know. I honestly think Fran picks the guy that can give us the best shot at wins. If carney or Williams could do that they wouldn’t have brought in angelli or Collins and they most certainly wouldn’t have Collins higher in the depth chart. I really think Collins might be the best option unfortunately. Carney looked very small in that one playing he came in for against Colgate.
