The fact he flew out to SU before officially cutting ties with SDSU/vice versa and it’s before the coaches convention is a good sign as well. Assuming he and DB are on the same page as much as they were during phone communication, they’ll be at the coaching convention looking for staff.

Thats what I think, you dont just hop in a plane and fly from San Diego to Syracuse unless your serious, because you could easily chat with Dino next week at the convention if it was just an informal chat.

he could hop in his car and drive to USC and do that much easier and drive it up much more . which I suppose he could have already, but nothing of the sort has been reported

Nowadays it’s just as easy to do that with well placed media sound bites and dropping “leads” to people. There’s no need to fly across the country to do that anymore. IMO. He also doesn’t seem like the type of guy, at his age to fly across the country just to jerk someone off.

But why do that before you even have a DC/full staff in place? You do that after the coaches convention not a couple days before the guy mysteriously retires from his HC position.

doesn't fit what Rocky seemingly wants to do. he has said many times that head coaching has so many headaches, he would just love to focus on being a coordinator. even on an interim basis, taking over head coaching duties at a football factory doesn't make any sense.

This would be the second time he moved from a D1 HC job to a DC position.

well somebody dropped a tip to Thamel that he was flying to Syracuse.

All I’m saying is he has offers on the west coast, too. And there are fewer logical reasons for a guy who has coached for 42 years on or near the west coast to, at the age of 70, start a new job in Syracuse. He’s not really much closer to family members. He’s got to get a new house.

I hope it works out, but it just seems illogical.

that's what phones and Skype are for. Rocky at age 70 isn't going to drag his butt 2500 miles to do that, turn around and go back to San Diego, rush to meet with his coaches and then "retire" 48 hours after visiting SU on a "chat" visit with Dino. just doesn't make a bit of sense

yep, I have desperately been trying not to get my hopes up with this potential hire, but everything is adding up to it. Very reliable posters, here and elsewhere, saying they heard that we had our guy back in mid-December, reports that Rocky told his AD right after the season and before their bowl (early December basically) that he was seriously thinking about stepping down. Salem and McCloud news comes out a day before it is leaked that Rocky is on campus meeting with Dino. Rocky heads back from SU, meets with his staff and steps down two days after his SU visit...

These are all good points. I can present a powerpoint strategy to a team 2500 miles away sharing my screen using google hangouts. This was most definitely an above average business meeting. (and no the guy wasn't here to advise Dino on Dino's staff.)

When you get past the phone interview and all parties are still interested you meet in person.

Now the one thing that bothers me is the leak to Thamel. HCDB doesn't like leaks. This is when I wonder if it was an agent to get the ball rolling for bigger interest and more money.

So you think the guy knew he was retiring from the school he’s been at for 10 years but decided to fly across the country to meet with SU and talk defense schemes before the team even has a DC or staff in place? Seems like a strange thing to do when your in the process of retiring from your current job.

yep, other teams come calling, Wildhack has to open the pocketbook a bit wider.

i dont anything about this.. i do know coaches and ADs in other college sports and how they work the process and everyone one is done different based on need.

much like some coaches who people think quit or were fired and it really came down to the Wife not being happy with the social scene and forced a move

We know he’s all about running a tight ship, and does NOT like when things are ‘leaked’.
Dino is all about controlling the message.

Here's the rub on the leak. The fact the guy went back home, gave some evasive answers to questions and then retired within a few days is extremely curious. Would you do that on a leap of faith for a bigger job & payday unless you had a handshake agreement/deal in the pocket? Sure scumbags like Roger Harriott and Chris Beatty have backed out of deals but Long doesn't strike me as that type. But that's what I'm not sure about. Why take the gamble ?

Dino turned down a job on a leak. He wouldn't be happy about this unless he ok'd it and I don't believe he'd now get into a bidding over it.
