Rocky Long

obviously I’m completely speculating, I don’t know crap and I’m also excited about the idea of rocky as the DC, so that impacts my thoughts to some degree. But I don’t think this is a reach and it seems like there’s something there to all of this. It still might not happen, who knows. Just hoping the odds are in our favor more than they are at times with recruiting players

So you think the guy knew he was retiring from the school he’s been at for 10 years but decided to fly across the country to meet with SU and talk defense schemes before the team even has a DC or staff in place? Seems like a strange thing to do when your in the process of retiring from your current job.

At his press conference, it was stated he spoke to SDSU AD after their bowl game that he was considering retirement/resigning.

650+ replies to a possible DC hire is PEAK offseason. This sucker could get easily 1000+ posts.

C'mon gang, we got work to do!
Playing detective and reading between the lines of this whole thing has literally been one of the highlights of my week. I tried to explain it to my wife and got a blank stare. Thank goodness for this board.

I also really enjoy being the guy who has not yet lost faith.

I've received that blank stare a bunch of times.

Correct. I’m not sure that changes anything I said though. He wasn’t happy with some of the demands of the administration. He speaks with DB, ultimately flies out to Syracuse, and two days later officially retires.

He didn’t fly out to discuss his defensive strategies with a coach who doesn’t have a DC yet. Not in the midst of all that was going on on his end. IMO.

Time to bring in the Oak Island boys.

The question is: does it get to its highest mark as a result of hiring rocky or as a result of rocky joining another team.

I think I know the answer

I agree 100%

Here's one way to get an answer. Whose turn is it?

ok, here is the timeline:

Sunday January 5th: Salem announces he is leaving, word comes out that McCloud is gone
Monday January 6th: Thamel and others report that Rocky in on campus at SU with Dino
From that point onward: this site has turned into The Wizard of Oz, flying monkeys included
So are you saying I need to bring back one of my older avis?

Just a note, one of our most reliable posters has confirmed that SU had its DC some time ago. This would again push the needle towards Long since Dino wouldn't have someone then dump them because someone better came along. My guess is he was in Syracuse Monday to dot some i;s and cross some ts. But then again I picked Syracuse to go 10-2 last fall so thats how much I know.

well somebody dropped a tip to Thamel that he was flying to Syracuse.

All I’m saying is he has offers on the west coast, too. And there are fewer logical reasons for a guy who has coached for 42 years on or near the west coast to, at the age of 70, start a new job in Syracuse. He’s not really much closer to family members. He’s got to get a new house.

I hope it works out, but it just seems illogical.

repeating from a post earlier in the thread

old guys that have accomplished most of what they set out to do are weird

Explaining this whole board to my wife is the best way to get her to nod with a blank look on her face. I almost got a new grill for the deck with a little board talk okie doke last summer

He recruits. From his good-bye presser:

Q. Coach, is there any thought that you might end up at one of those places now that you have had that open ear and talked to them?
ROCKY LONG: As of this moment I'm retired, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to listen to anything they have to say. I mentioned it before, I'm tired of being the head coach but I love coaching. The most fun I ever had coaching is when I was coaching the DBs and the secondary and coaching the defense for Brady Hoke, because Brady was the head coach and all he made me do was coach and recruit; that's all I had to do. That's the most fun I've ever had in coaching. If somebody gives me that opportunity again, I might take it.
