Todays hot twitter talk is Lville and Cincy to B12 with UConn and rutgers to ACC. No mention of ND. :noidea:

Twitter talk #2 is crazy talk unless it is purposely being spread to pressure ND. If so, then proceed.

I can't imagine the ACC effectively shutting out the possibility of ND by going to 16. Until that writing is on the wall, there will be a place for ND. (I know you are just reporting the tweet and not necessarily expressing your opinion).

ACC has no reason to expand, unless it involves PSU or ND. ACC can get RU/UConn any day they want--them being homeless is meaningless.

The only thing I see that would pressure the ACC to 16 teams is the renegotiated TV contract.

If the ACC has been advised by ESPN this renegotiation will be a "one time only" opportunity, that may light a fire under their collective asses to get to 16 teams right now.

And I'm sure the Notre Dame power-brokers aren't exactly looking forward to regularly scheduled games with Houston, SMU and SDSU for their Olympic sports...

ACC is keeping a spot open for ND and maybe TX for the short term. Key is ND's next TV deal.
No Uconn or ru till ACC gets a better idea.

Agree. The ACC is holding out its last 2 spots for the 2 biggest prizes. 2013 is the big date. If NBC doesn't deliver to ND what they have seen in the past, and if the Irish believe the ACC's numbers, then there is a chance. And luring PSU away, even while the program is experiencing this turmoil, may be even harder. But that won't stop the ACC from at least trying.

I always thought WVU and UConn were the backups, and they still might be. I agree, RU and UConn can pretty much be asked any day the ACC wants to ask them; WVU might even jump down the road IF the ACC wants them.

...no reason for ACC to go to 16 now unless ND gave a definitive never and/or says going elsewhere like Big1

ND will never go to Big1. Completely wrong cultural fit. It is the ACC or remain Indie in football. Tradition, tradition, tradition. Money is barely an issue. ACC has BC, Pitt, Miami, Syracuse. If the ACC added the Naval Academy it would be even more attractive for ND as long as they could continue to schedule USC, and Michigan/Michigan State/Purdue for OOC games.

Anybody who thinks TV won't deliver on an ND contract needs to rethink this, imho.

Isn't TV the reason why the BiG and the ACC want ND in their conference in the first place?

Cheers,
Neil

There are a number of things that need to be corrected here...

ND will never go to Big1. Completely wrong cultural fit. It is the ACC or remain Indie in football. Tradition, tradition, tradition. (If Tradition, tradition, tradition is indeed what ND is after, the B1G may make the most sense. Existing rivalries and regional fit.)

Money is barely an issue. (Um, yeah. Sure thing. Money isn't an issue? If ND can't get a fat new contract with NBC...watch how quickly money become an issue. Money is ALWAYS the issue. It is the main issue that is front and center.)

ACC has BC, Pitt, Miami, Syracuse. (How does this affect ND's decision? Outside of Pitt, none of these schools are even a moderate rival of ND Football)

If the ACC added the Naval Academy it would be even more attractive for ND as long as they could continue to schedule USC, and Michigan/Michigan State/Purdue for OOC games. (Can we stop with the Naval Academy to the ACC already? This is about as foolish as predicting USC to the ACC. The Big East is thinking of adding the service academies out of desparation. The ACC is in no such position.)

The issue is that ND no longer carries viewers on their own unless they are in the NCG hunt. ND vs Army, Navy, Air Force, Big East teams or middling ACC teams does nothing for NBC. In addition with most conferences going to 9 games it leaves ND very few marquee games for NBC to televise. So why would NBC fork over big bucks? The B1G and ACC want ND because ND vs the top teams in the conference is a big $ TV game. NBC would get 2 maybe 3 big money games but ND would want big money for 7 games.

Make no mistake traditon for ND is independence and playing rivals like USC, Navy etc. The 3 Big Ten teams I named are ssoemwhat regional rivalies too. If they conference play teams like Pitt and BC, can play small privates like SU, Wake Forest, Miami and schedule the ones I mentioned for OCC that works. And BC (small, private, Catholic) is as much a rival as Pitt for ND.

As for money, ND can secure a contract for television that will provide them with plenty of money and they will get to keep all bowl revenue. What other small private could have paid off Coach Weiss without blinking like ND.

Culture and tradtion are more important to ND and their alumni than anything. I take that back. Those two are second and third to winning.

I used Navy as an example of an addition that enhances the possibility.

You are missing the point. ND's indy schedule still actually has them playing "bigger" opponents than playing in the ACC would. Posters who claim that TV will not pay ND the big bucks (or even more ludicrously claim that they won't get paid the $15 million they currently get) can't on the same hand claim that having ND in the conference will increase the ACC pot enough to warrant adding two extra mouths to feed since these same posters are the ones claiming the ACC will get at least $15 million per team with the additions of SU and Pitt.

Cheers,
Neil

1) UCONN will never end up in the ACC. Listened to an ACC insider on college sports radio on SIRIUS Friday and he said that conference wants nothing to do with the school in any way, shape, or form. That Coach K can fight in the press for them but Coach K doesn't carry that kind of weight inside the entire conference to get them in. The school and powers that be around UCONN are disliked by all.

2) Anyone who thinks ND isn't ND anymore, is lost. People like to rag on ND because you either love them or hate them with the majority hating them. But they still are the #1 college football brand out there today.

3) This notion that ND is talking with conferences means NBC is unhappy with them is 100% false as well this insider said. It might be a ploy to get MORE $$$$ out of NBC actually because right now ND has ALL the leverage! NBC sports is dying and they are starting up a new all sports network in a month. NBC is out of the MLB and NBA business. If they lose Notre Dame they are out of the college football business. They get 1 NFL game a week, which is nothing. They lost UFC to FOX. They have no college sports to speak of. If they lose ND you might as well turn off the lights on NBC Sports because it becomes Golf, Tennis, NHL and 1 NFL game a week for a couple months.
