Definitely, yes, let's play Rutgers every year.
We can add them to the annual series people here want to play with Maryland, West Virginia, UConn, Buffalo, Army, Navy, Northwestern, Penn State, Texas-San Antonio and Colorado School of Mines.
We'll play an 18 game schedule, suck on that NFL!!1!!!1!

Agreed.Never.
I have no hate for them they are your annoying relative who try to act like they are God's gift to football or something when they just played in the first college game. If they just and we played on them on the field then I would be happy. We have played Pittsburgh for 40 years in a row and have no real hatred between us. Their ex-Coach was a big POS who negatively recruited against us and that is where a lot of the dislike comes from, but they are irrelevant nationally in college football and like to act like they have surpassed everyone in the Northeast when all they did was go from laughing stock to mediocre. Congrats to them they beat us at our very worst and are a decent team, but now that we are in different conferences we are done with them.I'm curious about the ages of the people who absolutely hate Rutgers. My guess is that it's people below the age of 30. To me (mid 30's) they were that annoying bug that keeps buzzing around the car until the ed little thing finally finds it's way out the open window. They're insignificant and forgotten. The word for my feelings toward VaTech, West Virginia, and Penn St. will always be hatred, but not Rutgers. Admittedly, my hatred for Penn St. isn't as great as the other two because of my age.
I understand where you're coming from. I'd root for BC, but I used to root for GTown over OOC teams too. That way when we beat them it meant more. I agree Penn St. is no longer our biggest rival, and to Penn St. it may never have been, but Rutgers is not our biggest rival now either. When we were still in the big east that designation would have gone to WVU, and with Rutgers now in a different conference, whatever rivalry that may have been growing is now over before it really even began. I don't know that we have any established rival at this point. We need to keep improving and see who we have real battles with over a period of time before we'll know that.Ok, I'll bite. I knew I'd regret starting this thread. I'm 44 and a Syracuse grad, as is my father. My perspective on Syracuse goes back to 1960 - through my dad. During my years on the Hill, the football team was at its apex - starting with my freshman year in '87. I was at the Dome when the drought against Penn State ended. I've been through the ups and downs.
I'd like to call PSU our greatest gridiron rival. But I can't in good conscience do so as the universities and programs don't quite match. Maybe some day, but not right now. I think it highly unlikely that any PSU fan born after 1965 would consider Syracuse a big rival. There's just not a ton of passion between the schools these days. Perhaps I am wrong about this. And perhaps this will change as we improve and they (hopefully) remain mediocre.
On to Rutgers. It is exceptionally bothersome to me that Syracuse is 3-7 over the last 10 years against Rutgers. After starting the series with (If I'm not mistaken) a 27-5 record. This trend is frankly unimaginable. It annoys me that, more times than not, we seem to be hoping that a recruit chooses us over Rutgers - rather than expecting.
It galls me to say this, but the schools, to a certain degree, are similar - academically, geographically, stadium size, and (currently) in terms of national profile. And the schools are fighting over the same recruiting turf - while residing in different conferences. Their fans are annoying. Their colors and mascot are queso. And the Big 10 is easy to root against.
Don't get me wrong - I love playing B.C. again. That's great. And it's a good rivalry that will only get better. But I don't despise them - maybe I will soon, we'll see. Case in point, if BC is playing Rutgers, who would you root for? I'll wager 8 out of 10 would grudgingly say BC. I feel the same way about Pitt as well as West Virginia. But Rutgers? It's another level of antipathy.
It would be great - each year - to beat Rutgers, beat the Big 10 and win the recruiting turf battle - as NY's College Team. And after 10 years of doing so repeatedly, drop them from the schedule.
But for right now - they are arguably our biggest rival. And rivalries are what college sports are all about. And I for one would look forward to a game each year - and everything that entails including dealing with their ridiculous fans.
Blast away.
As has been said here time after time after time...
In order to have a "rivalry" both teams have to have experienced success at the same time. For Syracuse, we have had success off and on for 125 years. At no point in time, when we were successful, was Buttgers having success. They have been a boil on the A%$ of college football for 125 years. The only limited success they have had has been in the last 7-8 years, which has arguably been (other than the last three) among the worst for Syracuse, ever! They have had built-in wins through crap scheduling, and have had an extreme shortage of quality out of conference wins during that time. Yes, they picked up a few wins against Syracuse. Good for them. Even in our down years, we still picked up some quality OOC wins, while Buttgers was picking on Bumfolk State. Way to go Scarlet Nighties! Way to represent the BE, while taking 20 years of checks.
Simply put. They are not our rival. Will never be our rival. My distaste for all things Rutgers starts with some of the Internet fan base, who think football began 8 years ago, and with their Ex-coach who was (and is) a slimy turd.
Love all but last line I omitted. Still would like to play Rutgirls in off years we don't play Maryland.
I would only feel comfortable foisting her upon Rutgers.PS with Cantor going to Rutgirls, beating them would be more sweet now than ever!
I work with a guy who is a Penn State Alum and he was surprised when I mentioned the old Penn St rivalry. He didn't know there ever was one. He's fairly young so I understand it. He also doesn't appreciate it when I call them Pedo State so its a wash.I understand where you're coming from. I'd root for BC, but I used to root for GTown over OOC teams too. That way when we beat them it meant more. I agree Penn St. is no longer our biggest rival, and to Penn St. it may never have been, but Rutgers is not our biggest rival now either. she's chancellor of another campus of RU I believe.PS with Cantor going to Rutgirls, beating them would be more sweet now than ever!
Rutger, . These schools are ghosts of our past. Any new/renewed rivalry is going to be UL, Pitt, or BC. Pitt isn't playing WV every year anymore, they need someone to fill in their shoes for the backyard brawl. The game will have major bowl implications for both teams, and we certainly compete with them for recruits. BC is an old rivalry just waiting to be renewed and it shall be this Nov. It's been almost 10 years but we have alot of history with that team. As for UL, they are probably 3rd in the pecking order, we have limited history but they have to be getting to a point where they hate SU. First was the Grob/Arob beating. Then we knocked them off their horse last year as well. We are 3-3 in our last 6 meetings and 6-6 overall. The one thing that sort of keeps us from developing a rivalry is geographic location and recruiting areas. But I see no reason to try and create a rivalry with a team that is not in our conference, not in our state, and has only been playing decent to mediocre football for less than a decade. I used to be on this whole Rutgers rivalry thing too, but really I hated Schiano more than the actual program. Let them rot in the B1G. Nobody around here will care what they do in another year or two.
